1 5520/4520 Wireless Network and Protocols Project 3 (due 12/02/2013) The objective of this project is to measure QoS (Quality of Service) of audio and video streams in wireless networks. In particular, we measure QoS parameters of VoIP traffic in buildings across the UNT campus. You will be using Discovery Park for the measurements. The QoS parameters include: 1) Upload bandwidth, 2) Download bandwidth, 3) Sender jitter, 4) Receiver jitter, 5) Sender delay and 6) Receiver delay. Here receiver and sender means local and remote hosts. Methodology: Sign out an android phone equipped with a VoIP client and test the audio and video. The client will be communicating with the VoIP media server (installed in our lab). You will activate the VoIP phone (i.e., initiate a call) by shaking it. After the call is established, the phone will start collecting the QoS parameters for every one second. These parameters will be logged in a file. You will extract the files from the phone (the file is called linphone_statistics). There are two files: one for the audio and another for the video. Hang up after every scenario. This will result in creation of two files related to the scenario. Collect the QoS parameters for the following scenarios Different lighting conditions o Indoor natural light o Indoor low light o Indoor Bright light o Outdoor low light o Outdoor bright light Different audio conditions o Low noisy audio o High noisy audio o Speaking at a distance from the phone Different motion conditions o Capturing video/audio while slow walking o Capturing video/audio while running Different WiFi signal conditions o Overlapping distance between APs (you may observe blank screen) o Dead zones or weak signal strength areas (you may observe blank screen)

Tabulation, Discussion, and Report: Write a report describing the purpose, introduction, methodology, results, discussion and conclusions. You will be tabulating the QoS parameters for each of the above scenarios. You should give a quality score for audio/video in the range from 1-5. Next, you are expected to write detailed comments on the degradation of QoS parameters (if any). You need to explain the reasons for the degradation. You should give a quality score for audio/video in the range: excellent-5, good-4, fair-3, poor-2, and bad-1. =========================================================== How do I use LinphoneShaker? Notes 1. Please arrive minutes before your session's start time to do the following: 1. Receive a required briefing on: 1. Android 2. Linphone 3. Troubleshooting information 4. How to use the shaking application 5. Other aspects of the project if needed 2. Test the application around Discovery Park under the direct supervision of a research assistant from the lab to ensure that the following work correctly: 1. CSV logging 2. connecting to the wireless network automatically 3. spawning Linphone automatically when shaken 2. After the initial briefing and supervised testing are complete, the research assistant will take your student ID, and you will have 2 hours to complete the assignment. Use discovery park for all the measurements 3. When your time is up, please promptly return the phones to the Network Security Lab to get your student ID back. You may take a few minutes to retrieve the applicable CSV log files from the phone using the provided workstation at the front of the lab. How do I use LinphoneShaker? To use LinphoneShaker, follow these steps: 1. Turn on your Android phone. 2. Unlock your Android phone at the lock screen. 3. If you just booted your Android phone, wait 5 minutes before attempting to use LinphoneShaker. 4. Hold the phone securely in your hand and shake the phone three to five times. Ensure that the

3 phone DOES NOT leave your hand during the shaking, and DO NOT shake the phone so hard that it breaks. 5. The LinphoneShaker will now find an available connection and start a Linphone call using the procedure described in the How Does LinphoneShaker Start Linphone? section. Note that scanning for and connecting to networks can take several minutes. What are the log files? Each time you shake the phone to start a call, Linphone will record certain call statistics in different CSV (Comma-Separated Values) files in the linphone_stats directory of your smartphone. You can open CSV files in a text editor (e.g. Notepad++ or Notepad) or in the spreadsheet program of an office suite (e.g. LibreOffice/OpenOffice Base or Microsoft Excel). Each call will have an AUDIO file and a VIDEO file. The file names include the date and time of the call. While testing, please make note of when you shake the phone, where you shake the phone, and other details required for completing the report. The log files ONLY record the following: System Time (ns) Download Bandwidth (kbps) Jitter Buffer Size (ms), " Late Packets (cumulative) Local Late Rate (%) Local Loss Rate (%) Receiver Interarrival Jitter Round Trip Delay (s) Sender Interarrival Jitter Sender Loss Rate (%) Upload Bandwidth (kbps) ICE State Media Type How do I Get The Files? The audio and video log files are located in the phone's linphone_stats directory. Each file is named as follows: 4DigitYear-2DigitMonth-2DigitDay-2DigitHour-2DigitMinute- 2DigitSeconds_linphone_LogType_log.csv, where LogType is either AUDIO or VIDEO. To complete a

4 report on your calls, you must write down on a separate piece of paper the time, location, and other required information for that call. Just install any applicable USB drivers for your phone, plug it in to your computer, open the phone's storage directory, and find the linphone_stats directory. Alternatively, there will be a computer at the front of the lab you can use to retrieve the csv files from the linphone_stats directory. The credentials are as follows: username: csce3530 password: csce3550 Please follow ALL instructions given by Dr. Dantu or the research assistants in the lab. DO NOT do any of the following while using the computer at the front of the lab: install or remove software start any applications not started by the csce3530 user unplug the computer shut down the computer log off or switch to any user other than the csce3530 user disconnect the USB cable provided from the computer connect any external devices other than the approved lab smartphones used for the experiment. If your version of LinphoneShaker is producing a cpuprocusage.csv file, please leave the file alone. Troubleshooting Below are steps you can take if the LinphoneShaker does not work. 1. Give the LinphoneShaker more time to scan for and connect to a network (this can take several minutes). 2. Verify that you have installed the Linphone application on your Android phone, and that you have properly configured the Linphone application with your SIP account. 3. You may need to shake the phone a bit harder or a few more times consecutively without pausing. But do not shake the phone so hard that it breaks or slips out of your hand. 4. Verify that you have previously configured a wireless or other Internet connection within range of your current location that is NOT a walled garden (a network that requires you to enter login information into a browser upon connecting). If you wish to connect to a walled garden, you must connect and log in to the walled garden immediately before shaking the phone. 5. Ensure that your phone has fully started up before using the LinphoneShaker. 6. Try rebooting your phone. If you are redirected to your phone's Wi-Fi settings and/or see a Toast (a small dialog at the bottom of the screen) related to the application, please double-check your Wi-Fi settings and the signal strength of the UNT network.

5 If you cannot connect to the UNT wireless network, but the network's signal strength is good, do the following: 1. Open Settings Wifi 2. Touch the UNT wireless network 3. Enter your EUID (the thing you use as your MyUNT/Blackboard/CSE Moodle/CSE Machine username) as either the Anonymous Identity or the Identity (if one fails, try the other) 4. Enter your UNT password in the password box 5. Touch Connect If the above procedure did not work, touch the network, click Forget, and repeat the above steps. If you still cannot connect to the UNT wireless network, contact the Network Security Lab for assistance. Unless instructed otherwise, you MUST use the UNT wireless network for your experiments, not Eduroam, Eaglenet or another wireless network. Note that the provided smartphones DO NOT have SIM cards so you CANNOT make non-linphone calls on them.
