This hands-on lab shows you the power of the Autodesk 360 platform combined with Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD and other Building Information Modeling (BIM) applications. You will see how this tool can potentially change your firm's workflow with BIM. You will also learn how to use Autodesk 360 for cloud-based rendering and analysis and the role AutoCAD WS web and mobile application can play in new emerging workflows. What are the benefits of 360 s Cloud computing? About the Speakers Jerry Campbell, IFMA member e: au@ikerd.com Jerry Campbell is Virtual Design & Construction consultant at IKERD Consulting, LLC. He brings extensive construction, Facility Management (FM) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology experience to the firm s clients in the A\E\C\O & FM industries. Some of his pioneering projects include high-definition laser scanning of post-tensions reinforcing for the purpose of creating FM as-built models. His experiences include Autodesk products such as Revit MEP, Revit Structure, Revit Architecture, Navisworks Manage, and AutoCAD. A main focus of Mr. Campbell s consulting is in Facility Management and how BIM implementations can enhance the building life cycle. He received his degree in Industrial Technology Construction from Texas State University and is currently a member of the International Facility Management Association. 4 What is Autodesk 360? Autodesk 360 provides a broad set of features, cloud services and cloud-enabled products to help you dramatically improve the way you design, visualize, simulate, and share your work with others anytime, anywhere. Autodesk 360 offers 3GB of free storage upon creating an account. You can easily gain additional space as needed by purchasing a subscription. With a Subscription, you receive 25 GB of space per seat plus additional features as well. Currently if you run out of free space, you cannot gain or purchase additional space. However, purchasing additional space is a feature Autodesk 360 may offer in the future. If you want to see your available space online, you can visit This also shows your available cloud units, which will be discussed later. Figure 1 shows an inside look at what you will see when viewing your Autodesk 360 account. Figure 1: Cloud Storage & Computing Capacity Navigating Autodesk 360 The following illustrations will guide you on how to operate the very basics of Autodesk 360 user interface. What you will find is Autodesk 360 is a very intuitive and user-friendly application. Individuals will be able to navigate the application and learn the ins and outs within just one day! Note: Please use Google Chrome for all of the following exercises. Exercise #1: Creating a User Account Type 360.Autodesk.com into your web address to access Autodesk 360. Follow the numbered list to create an account. 1 Click Create Account 2 You will see a command prompt as seen in Figure 2. Fill out this information with a working address, as you may need it later. 4

5 Figure 2: Create Account Once you have created an account, use your new Autodesk ID and password to login. Exercise #2: Creating a Folder Structure 1 From the main page on 360.Autodesk.com click Login, and you will see the image in Figure 3. 2 Once logged in, click on Documents next to the Home tab in the top left corner. 3 Click on New Folder as highlighted in Figure 4. Name the Folder Autodesk University 2012 and click save. Figure 3: Sign In 4 Right Click on Autodesk University 2012 and click New Subfolder. (You can also click on the icon as seen in Figure 5.) Name the folder From_Client. 5 Repeat step four and name the second subfolder To_Client. You now have a project folder with a simple file structure. 5

6 Figure 4: Create a Project Folder Exercise #3: Uploading and Downloading Documents 1 From within the From_Client folder click Upload next to the New Folder button. 2 As seen in Figure 6, you can drag and drop files into the highlighted area or search for documents by clicking Select Documents. Upload your data sets to this folder. The following steps will illustrate how to download the same folders. Follow along but do not bother downloading the documents. Figure 5: creating Subfolders 3 Click on the previously uploaded document and click download as seen in Figure 7. One can download the complete project folder by following the same procedures listed above. The only difference is that one would right-click on the From_Client folder. 6

7 Figure 6: Uploading Documents Figure 7: Downloading Documents To interact with one of the drawings, double click on either the 2D or 3D model. A new browser will open which allows one to interact with the model. The 2D or 3D model can then be viewed in a web browser before downloading the document. This is ideal for finding the correct documents needed. Note that the interaction view requires Google Chrome. Exercise #4: Leaving Comments Add a comment to the From_Client Folder: 1 Notice the button in Figure 8. Click this button to leave comments. The button has a number which indicates the number of comments left. 2 Type Autodesk 360 in the Comment box. Look at Figure 9 and notice how 360 has a comment history dialogue. 8 Figure 9: Comment History Dialog Exercise #5: Sharing Documents The following illustrates how to share documents with team members, clients, and other stake holders: 1 Right click on one of the drawings within the From_Client folder as seen in Figure 10. Also, notice the share option. 2 Click public sharing and turn public sharing on. (See Figure 11) This file will be available to anyone that has the link. 3 Right click on another drawing within the From_Client folder. Make this drawing private. 4 Add individual addresses and press add. Figure 10: Sharing Documents 5 Once you have added an address set the accessibility level to one of the four: view document, view & download document, view, download & update document, or full access. 9 Figure 12: Set Access Level After these exercises, click on the Home tab and notice how 360 keeps a track record of all document history. It even records names of individuals who have made changes and the dates the changes were made! (See Figure 13) This is ideal for virtual teams working on different schedules and in different time zones. Figure 13: Recent Activities Notice how you can see who viewed, deleted, uploaded, and downloaded files! This makes tracking file history much easier. 9

10 Autodesk 360 Benefits Also notice to the right from the home page your 360 benefits. These range from Autodesk 360 rendering, structural analysis, mobile, and more. Clicking on any of these links will take you to another page where you can access previous renderings, structural analyses, energy analyses, and so forth. These will be discussed later in this document under cloud computing. Figure 14: 360 Benefits (highlighted line items are free benefits) How Secure is Autodesk 360? All transactions between Autodesk 360 servers and your PC are encrypted with industrystandard encryption technologies. When you see in your Internet browser address line, your data is protected by encryption. For more information on the security of your work, please visit What different tools and applications complement Autodesk 360? With cloud on the rise, Autodesk has implemented 360 in a vast variety of different software platforms, such as Revit and Design Review. With more people constantly on the go from city to city, state to state, and nation to nation, Autodesk has designed mobile applications (apps) for your laptop, tablet, and phone. Through the introduction of mobile apps and the power of Autodesk 360, you can view and edit 10

11 documents on the go. Autodesk CAD WS, Mobile, Infrastructure, Glue, Field, PLM, Show Case are all relatively new apps. For this lab, we will only cover CAD WS and Design Review. Design Review Accelerate your design reviews on your desktop with Autodesk Design Review software. It s the free*, all-digital way to view, mark up, print, and track changes to Autodesk 2D and 3D files without the original design software. Work with a wide variety of file formats, including DWF and DWFx, DWG and DXF (requires installation of free DWG TrueView software) and Adobe PDF, as well as several image file types including.bmp,.jpg,.gif,.pcx,.pct,.png,.rlc,.tga,.tif,.mil,.cal, and more. Below is an example of Autodesk Design Review in use: Figure 15 Shows a CAD file that has been marked up and rejected. 12 Figure 16 illustrates how to open a CAD file through Design Review. Figure 16: From the Application menu Approval, review, rejection stamps; and more can be used to send a quick concise message to other team members with very little time involved (see Figure 17.) 13 Figure 18: You can access Autodesk 360 by clicking the button highlighted above. Autodesk Design Review takes you to your projects that are available on Autodesk 360. AutoCAD WS AutoCAD WS is a light version of AutoCAD. While it has features of AutoCAD, it does not contain the full application. It has the capability of opening DWG, DXF TM, DWF, and PDF files. Also important to note, with AutoCAD WS one can open and edit files with just a web browser! These files edited in real time and saved to Autodesk keeps a track record of the previous files used and will always use the most current updated file. Exercise #1: Exploring CAD WS 1 Right click on a.dwg file and click Edit Online in AutoCAD WS. 2 From the Home ribbon, use the following tools: line, circle, polyline, text, and other basic CAD tools. 3 From the Annotate ribbon, draw leaders and dimensions. Figure 19: Opening CAD WS 4 From the View tab, select Google Maps from the ribbon. You should see a similar image as seen in Figure 20. (This is ideal for working out site logistics.) 5 Change the Google Map Type to your liking. (See Figure 21) 6 Share the edited file with a coworker under the share tab. 7 Under the Timeline tab, hover over the dot above current as seen in Figure 22. Time liner Shows the date and individual that made changes over the life span of the document. 8 Move from the editor over to the Drawings button above the Edit button. 14 9 From the Edit button, move on up to the Messages button. You can leave a message describing the changes you have made. Autodesk 360 cloud services help you dramatically improve the way you work empowering you with anytime, anywhere access, robust collaboration, and virtually infinite computing power. Using Autodesk 360 s new cloud computing technology, one can run highly demanding tasks, such as rendering or structural analysis, on any computer with Internet connectivity. Cloud Units Cloud units are a unit of measure to assign value to the amount of capacity needed to perform different computing-intensive tasks using the Autodesk 360 cloud-computing platform. Individuals will only be able to receive cloud units through subscription. The following tables illustrate how many cloud units subscribers will be issued and the cost of cloud units per task. (Note none subscribers do not receive cloud units.) Stand Alone Products or Standard Suites 100 Cloud Units 14

Therefore, for a limited time, if you have used all your cloud units associated with your account, you can continue to use these services at no additional cost. Exercise #1: Cloud Rendering From Revit 1 Open a the given.rvt data file in revit 2 Once open, click Render in Cloud located under the View tab.
