5 1. BACKGROUND 1.1 Introduction The Open Group ArchiMate Certification Program for People (the Program) is intended to make certification available to people who have knowledge and understanding of ArchiMate Version 2.0 The Program is not intended to validate the ability of Candidates to use ArchiMate effectively in practice, nor to determine whether Candidates are competent IT or Enterprise Architects. The Program is intended to evolve, without major change to this policy, to address subsequent versions of ArchiMate that The Open Group may publish from time to time. The Program is designed with the following attributes: Openness The Program is open to applicants from all countries, although materials and examinations will initially be available only in English. Fairness Certification is achieved only by passing the applicable examination(s) and practical assessments that are the same as that taken by any other Candidate. Market Relevance The Program is structured to meet the perceived needs of the market for ArchiMate Certification. There are two certification levels. Additional levels may be introduced during the life of the Program, as may updated versions of ArchiMate. Support Training courses are provided by third parties, according to the needs of the market. Quality Training course providers may choose to seek Open Group accreditation for their courses. Accredited Training Courses (ATCs) are listed on The Open Group web site. Only accredited courses may use The Open Group logo and include the ArchiMate examinations and practical assessments within the course. Best Practice The Program is designed to comply with ISO/IEC 17024:2003: Conformity Assessment General Requirements for Bodies Operating Certification of Persons. The IAF Guidance Document for ISO/IEC has also been used to assist in the development of the Program. ArchiMate Certification is achieved by passing the applicable examination(s) and practical assessments. The Program is based upon a set of key documents: 1. The Certification Policy, which sets out the policies and processes by which a Candidate may achieve certification. 1 Guidance on the Application of ISO/IEC 17024:2003 (IAF GD ), published by the International Accreditation Forum, Inc. ( This document provides guidance to certification bodies seeking accreditation to ISO/IEC 17024:2003, and enables accreditation bodies to harmonize their application of the standards against which they assess certification bodies. ArchiMate Certification for People: Conformance Requirements, Version
6 2. The Conformance Requirements (this document), which documents the body of knowledge that a Candidate must possess to achieve certification. 3. The Accreditation Policy, which sets out the policies and processes by which a training course may achieve accreditation. 4. The Accreditation Requirements, which documents the criteria that must be met by an ATC. 1.2 Levels of Certification The Program currently includes the following levels of certification ArchiMate 2 Foundation The purpose of certification for ArchiMate 2 Foundation is to provide validation that the Candidate has gained knowledge of the notation, terminology, structure, and concepts of the ArchiMate modeling language. The learning objectives at this level focus on knowledge and comprehension. A single examination is provided to cover the learning outcomes for both ArchiMate 2 Foundation and ArchiMate 2 Certified. Candidates studying for ArchiMate 2 Certified in addition must pass a practical assessment initially administered only by ATC Providers. The descriptions of the examinations are maintained by the Certification Authority and displayed on The Open Group web site. This includes a description of the examination type (for example, simple multiple choice, complex scenario, practical exercise, etc.), the number of questions, the duration, supervision requirements, whether an examination is Open Book, permitted reference materials, the Pass Score, and the pre-requisites for taking the examination.
