SGI has successfully achieved a real-time latency guarantee of 30 à µsec for up to 64 threads, which is similar to more specialized hardware-software realtime solutions. With SGI REACT, system administration is easier, since the Linux used on the developer's systems is the same as the production system. The hardware system used as the developer system can also be identical to the production system. And software development is also easier, since the same compilers and tools used in non-real-time applications are also used for real-time programming. SGI REACT includes the SGI REACT library for Linux hard real-time performance,
the SGI Linux Trace debugger for real-time applications, frame rate scheduler, the SGI shield runtime anti-jitter capability, user level interrupt support and the external interrupt driver. This document contains the latest release information for SGI REACT, known problems at the time of release and pointers to related documentation. For late breaking caveats and other information not included in these release notes, visit the SGI Performance Suite 1 pages on the SGI Customer Portal: Before You Start / System Requirements SGI REACT 1.13 is supported on the following: HW: SGI systems with Intel x86_64 processors OS: SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP4 (SLES11 SP4) SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 SP2 (SLES12 SP2) Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 Server and Desktop (RHEL6.8) Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 Server and Desktop (RHEL7.3) SGI REACT 1.13 has been tested with the other components of the SGI Performance Suite, namely SGI MPI 1.13 and SGI Accelerate 1.13, as well as with SGI Foundation Software Major Highlights / Features Some of the major highlights in the SGI REACT 1.13 release include the following: - added support for SLES12 SP2, RHEL6.8 and RHEL7.3 - general bug fixes and minor improvements Not all software features in SGI REACT are supported across all CPU types. In general, SGI strongly recommends that you refer to available SUSE and Red Hat documentation when you need to install, update or upgrade the operating system. New systems ordered with an operating system and SGI REACT will arrive with the software pre-installed. There are multiple ways to install the product which are covered in more detail in section 3.0 Installation Methods below.
2.3 Software Updates SGI recommends that customers use the online update tools provided in the SLES11 and RHEL6 operating systems to keep the software installed on systems up to date with the latest maintenance fixes. Update procedures for clustered systems may differ, so refer to your cluster management software documentation for details. For updates to SLES or RHEL releases, see the appropriate documentation provided by SUSE or Red Hat. Software updates for SLES are provided by SUSE; updates for RHEL are provided by Red Hat. In order to configure your system to enable online updates, you must register with SUSE or with Red Hat. Again, see documentation from SUSE or Red Hat for details on SLES and RHEL updates Setting Online Repositories Updates for the SGI REACT 1.13 product are published to SGI's update server update.sgi.com at the following location: To setup access on systems running SLES, use yast to add the above directory or the following zypper command: # zypper ar \ 'react1.13-updates' # zypper refresh * Remember to replace the {os} value in the example above with the operating system running on the system (e.g., sles11sp4 or sles12sp2). When the the 'zypper refresh' command is run, you will be prompted for your "User Name" and "Password": # Retrieving repository 'react1.13-updates' metadata [\]Authentication required for ' User Name: [SGI Customer Portal User Name] Password: [SGI Customer Portal Password] If prompted to accept the SGI digital key, select "trust always": New repository or package signing key received: Key ID: 590A5B8C0DB30327 Key Name: SGI, Silicon Graphics, Inc. You may also add the online location using the Software Repositories module in YaST. To setup access on systems running RHEL, use a text editor to copy/paste the following into a file called /etc/yum.repos.d/react.repo. If the file already exists, just modify to fit your needs: ######################################## [sgi-react] name=sgi REACT $basearch - Updates baseurl= enabled=1 gpgcheck=1 gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/rpm-gpg-key-sgi ######################################## * Remember to replace the {os} value in the example above with the operating system running on the system (e.g., rhel6 or rhel73). To view the contents of the update server, simply point your browser at the following directory: You will need to provide your SGI Customer Portal login and password to access the directory. 2.4 Additional Details about Changes This section provides additional details about some of the changes available in the SGI REACT 1.13 release. - Linux Trace Toolkit (LTT) and LTTng Support On SGI REACT 1.13 for RHEL6, SGI provides an ltt kernel variant as well kernel modules to work with the ltt kernel. On SGI REACT 1.13 for SLES11 SP4, SGI provides only the LTTng kernel module for use with the default SLES11 SP4 kernel variant and other LTTng related tools Changes Introduced in Previous Releases - No SGI Foundation Software Dependency Previous SGI products such as SGI ProPack had a dependency on the SGI Foundation Software product. SGI REACT 1.13 is not dependent on the SGI Foundation Software product, although it is tested and validated with the SGI Foundation Software 2.15 product and SGI highly recommends using
the SGI Foundation Software product on all SGI x86_64 platforms. - Sltdebug Kernel Variant and Kernel Modules Removed SGI REACT 1.13 does not provide an sltdebug kernel variant or sltdebug kernel modules. The sltdebug kernel was meant for use in non-production debugging environments. - Post-install/upgrade Procedure The sgi-upgrade-utils package was added to a prior release for use on systems running SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11. SGI has identified certain corner cases in which symlinks to SGI kernel modules were not correctly created in /lib/modules/[kernel-version]/weak-updates/. The sgi-upgrade-utils package provides a utility which helps correct this issue by creating any missing links, fixing any broken links, and updating initrd images as necessary. Details on command usage are provided in section "3.1.6 Post-install/upgrade Procedure." 2.5 Weak Updates and Kernel Modules Several SGI products rely on the weak-updates mechanism, which allows kernel modules that were built against a specific kernel to work with later kernel updates, provided that the update contains no changes to the kernel Application Binary Interface (kabi) on which the kernel modules rely. (The kabi defines requirements for application portability in binary forms across different system platforms and environments.) This mechanism allows customers to update to newer kernels while continuing to use a static set of SGI kernel modules. If a kernel update introduces a change to the kabi and an SGI kernel module subsequently breaks, please notify SGI. SGI works with the operating system vendor when kernel incompatibilities in the kabi are introduced into kernel updates for the operating system. If you wish to continue using SGI software that depends on kernel modules, you must run a previous kernel without the kabi incompatibility until the operating system vendor addresses the issue. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// 3.0 Installation and Upgrade Methods SGI pre-installs SGI REACT on new systems ordered with the SGI REACT software product. In addition, SGI lists the operating system and SGI REACT products as yast/zypper installation sources (sles) or local yum repositories (rhel) in order to help you meet package dependencies that other SGI or 3rd party software may require during installation. The following sub-sections provide additional notes on installing and re-creating the local installation sources and repositories that SGI provides on systems configured in the SGI factory.
The installation instructions provided below can be completed using the physical product media or the ISO image, but are written based on use of the ISO images. 3.1 For Systems running SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 and Add SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP4 as Installation Source --- The following instructions assume that the system is already running SLES11 SP4. Adding SLES11 SP4 as an installation source will allow software tools to find any SLES11 SP4 packages required to meet any RPM dependencies during installation. The instructions below assume you are using the SLES11 SP4 ISO images: - SLES-11-SP4-DVD-x86_64-GM-DVD1.iso - SLES11 SP4 Installation DVD - SLES-11-SP4-DVD-x86_64-GM-DVD2.iso - SLES11 SP4 Source Packages DVD - SLES-11-SP4-DVD-x86_64-GM-DVD3.iso - SLES11 SP4 Debuginfo Packages DVD You may not want to add all the DVD images as installation sources, so tailor the instructions below to your individual system needs. # mkdir -p /opt/sgi/factory-install/sles11sp4 # cd /opt/sgi/factory-install/sles11sp4 # mv /path/to/isos/sles-11-sp4-dvd-x86_64-gm-dvd*.iso. # zypper ar -c -t yast2 "iso:/?iso=/opt/sgi/factory-install/sles11sp4/\ SLES-11-SP4-DVD-x86_64-GM-DVD1.iso" "SLES11-SP4-Install" # zypper ar -c -t yast2 "iso:/?iso=/opt/sgi/factory-install/sles11sp4/\ SLES-11-SP4-DVD-x86_64-GM-DVD2.iso" "SLES11-SP4-Source" # zypper ar -c -t yast2 "iso:/?iso=/opt/sgi/factory-install/sles11sp4/\ SLES-11-SP4-DVD-x86_64-GM-DVD3.iso" "SLES11-SP4-Debuginfo" # zypper refresh To verify that the product is now available, run the following command and review the output: # zypper lr Add SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 SP2 as Installation Source --- The following instructions assume that the system is already running SLES12 SP2. Adding SLES12 SP2 as an installation source will allow software tools to find any SLES12 SP2 packages required to meet any RPM dependencies during installation. The instructions below assume you are using the SLES12 SP2 ISO images: - SLE-12-SP2-Server-DVD-x86_64-GM-DVD1.iso - SLES12 SP2 Installation - SLE-12-SP2-Server-DVD-x86_64-GM-DVD2.iso - SLES12 SP2 Source Packages - SLE-12-SP2-Server-DVD-x86_64-GM-DVD3.iso - SLES12 SP2 Debuginfo Packages
You may not want to add all the DVD images as installation sources, so tailor the instructions below to your individual system needs. # mkdir -p /opt/sgi/factory-install/sles12sp2 # cd /opt/sgi/factory-install/sles12sp2 # mv /path/to/isos/sle-12-sp2-server-dvd-x86_64-gm-dvd*.iso. # zypper ar -c -t yast2 "iso:/?iso=/opt/sgi/factory-install/sles12sp2/\ SLE-12-SP2-Server-DVD-x86_64-GM-DVD1.iso" "SLES12SP2-Install" # zypper ar -c -t yast2 "iso:/?iso=/opt/sgi/factory-install/sles12sp2/\ SLE-12-SP2-Server-DVD-x86_64-GM-DVD2.iso" "SLES12SP2-Source" # zypper ar -c -t yast2 "iso:/?iso=/opt/sgi/factory-install/sles12sp2/\ SLE-12-SP2-Server-DVD-x86_64-GM-DVD3.iso" "SLES12SP2-Debuginfo" # zypper refresh To verify that the product is now available, run the following command and review the output: # zypper lr Add SGI REACT as an Installation Source and Install/Upgrade Remember to replace the ISO file name in the following examples with the actual ISO name; use react-1.13-cd1-media-sles11sp4-x86_64.iso if adding the SGI REACT 1.13 release. If you are using the media built for use with SLES12 SP2, please replace all the instances of "sles11sp4" below with "sles12sp2". # mkdir -p /opt/sgi/factory-install/sgi-react-1.13/ # cd /opt/sgi/factory-install/sgi-react-1.13/ # mv /path/to/isos/react-1.13-cd1-media-sles11sp4-x86_64.iso. # zypper ar -c -t yast2 \ "iso:/?iso=/opt/sgi/factory-install/sgi-react-1.13/\ react-1.13-cd1-media-sles11sp4-x86_64.iso" "SGI-REACT-1.13" # zypper refresh To verify that the product is now available, run the following command and review the output: # zypper lr To see the available patterns in the SGI REACT product, type the following command: # zypper patterns SGI-REACT-1.13 If asked about trusting the SGI key, select "trust always". Install a single pattern, such as SGI-REACT, with the following command: # zypper in --type pattern SGI-REACT To install multiple patterns, list them on the same line separated by spaces
as follows: # zypper in --type pattern SGI-REACT SGI-REACT-ltt NOTE: If you want to install the SGI-REACT-ltt pattern after already installing the SGI-REACT pattern, zypper/yast will report back that there is nothing to be done. While SGI continues to investigate the problem, SGI recommends the following workaround: # zypper in --force --type pattern SGI-REACT-ltt If upgrading a system that is already running an earlier version of SGI REACT 1.x, the system may be upgraded to the SGI REACT 1.13 release with any one of the following commands: # zypper dup --from SGI-REACT-1.13 # zypper update -r SGI-REACT-1.13 The "zypper dup" command applies the state of (specified) repositories onto the system; upgrades (or even downgrades) installed packages to versions found in repositories, removes packages that are no longer in the repositories and those which pose a dependency problem for the upgrade, handles package splits and renames, etc. The "zypper update" command will not update packages which would require change of package vendor unless the vendor is already specified in /etc/zypp/vendors.d, or which would require manual resolution of problems with dependencies. Such non-installable updates will then be listed in separate section of the summary as "The following package updates will NOT be installed:". When done, refer to the post-install/update instructions listed in section "3.1.6 Post-install/upgrade Procedure" Install or Upgrade Using YaST Add-On Products Module The Add-On Products module in YaST will add the product as a new software repository, attempt to add the location of SGI software updates as a new software repository and start up software management module. Any default product patterns will be automatically selected for installation by default. Review the patterns and packages selected for installation and follow any onscreen prompts from the software management module. Adding a newer version of the SGI REACT product using the YaST Add-On Products module, will automatically select any newer packages for installation and upgrade the system. When YaST attempts to add the location of SGI software updates, you will be prompted to provide your SGI Customer Portal user name and password Install or Upgrade Using YaST Software Repositories and Software
Management Modules You may also add the product as a new software repository using the Software Repositories module in YaST. Follow any on-screen prompts to add the CD or expanded CD image as a new software repository. Once the product is available as a software repository, start up the Software Management module in YaST. SGI recommends that you set the filter to "Patterns" and then select the pattern(s) from the SGI product that you wish to install. Review your selections and follow any on-screen prompts to complete the installation process. To upgrade a system, add the new product to the software repository and then in the Software Management module, select "Packages" -> "All Packages" --> "Update if newer version available" Post-install/upgrade Procedure After installing or upgrading a system using one of the methods documented above, you may want to run the following in order to create any missing or fix any broken symlinks to SGI kernel modules in the kernel weak-updates directories: # /usr/sbin/sgi-post-upgrade -Ar Help information can be provided with the following command: # /usr/sbin/sgi-post-upgrade -h IMPORTANT: SGI kernel modules may fail to load properly if the sgi-post-upgrade command is not run. The sgi-upgrade-utils package provides the sgi-post-upgrade command. 3.2 For Systems running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 and Add Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 6.8 as local YUM Repository ---- Sites with restrictive security policies that preclude access to the Red Hat Network, may find adding the RHEL6 software as local repositories helpful in satisfying software dependencies needed by SGI and other 3rd party software. The instructions below assume you are using the RHEL6.8 ISO images: - RHEL Server-x86_64-dvd1.iso - RHEL6.8 Base Install - Supp-6.8-RHEL Server-x86_64-dvd1.iso - RHEL6.8 Supplementary You may not want to add all the Supplementary DVD image as a repository, so
