1 Various Versioning & Snapshot FileSystems Our FileSystem versioning requirements, as I understand: A. Frequency of versioning at specified points-in-time B. Granularity of versioning a single or collection of directories in an FS C. Other Requirements :- 1. Different processes should be able to view the same directory hierarchy at different epochs simultaneously. 2. Ability to create branches from previous epochs (non-latest). 3. Ability to remove versions of file or delete the file completely. D. Preferably, an easy to implement system on top of an existing unversioned FS (?) Name Frequency & Granularity Elephant ext3cow Wayback Version FS - files versioned at every (last) close syscall - granularity of individual files - has smart policy-based schemes for cleaning of older versions - files versioned upon the first file change after a snapshot trigger or individual files (no directory trees) granularity - files versioned at every write (by trapping Syscall) - file level granularity - file versioned between every open and close (like Elephant) - individual file level granularity Implementation - after the first file open(), inode is duplicated - subsequent writes incur CoW of modified blocks until last close - at the last close, the inode is added to an inode log thus creating a new version - implemented at disk file system level rather than in virtual filesystem level [leads to tighter control of disk placement and to their smart CoW scheme where they do away with the copy by manipulating buffer cache] - all changes after an epoch (snapshot event) are CoW'en and tracked in the latest version's inode (as a bitmap) - upon a snapshot trigger, a new inode that includes the changed blocks (from the CoW bitmap) is created and it gets versioned [this way unless a file change happens, the same file version spans multiple epochs] - an epoch is mapped to file versions. - implemented over FUSE support (infrastructure to implement FS in userspace), which traps write() syscalls and does an upcall into wayback. - they then use UNDO log files (for each file in the system) to store changes made at every write. - implemented in kernel over Stackable File Systems, which uses the FiST [Stackable FileSystem Language and Template] to create FSes that can be easily ported to other OSes. - operates like Wayback by intercepting syscalls (open/close/write) - stores versions as complete compressed/uncompressed copies or diffs (according as storage policies specified by user) - incorporates Copy-on-Change, where the changed block contents are compared and updates made only if they differ (they contend this saved a good bunch of CoWs) - has retention policies similar to Elephant - version operations are provided through a user library (used as an LD_PRELOAD for command line operations) which intercepts the library calls versionfs specific ioctls on versioned file accesses. Compatibility - implemented in FreeBSD Kernel - this changes the BSD's VFS/vnode interface - could provide support to diff. on-disk FSes under it - implemented by extending ext3 - can co-exist with other nonversion FSes - implemented in userspace - could work over diff unversioned FSes under it - currently implemented in Linux - does not change kernel interfaces or add new syscalls - could work over different FSes

2 Name Frequency & Granularity CVFS (Comprehensiv e Versioning File Sytem) LFS (Log- Structured File System) Free BSD FS Snapshots (based on Soft Updates) Net App Snapshot (using WAFL Write Anywhere File System) VERITAS Snapshot FileSystem - file, metadata everything versioned on every change - file level granularity (I guess) - checkpoint based - whole filesystem - user-initiated or could be periodic - periodically - user initiated Implementation - designed with security in mind - the purpose in this case is to provide comprehensive versioning for self-securing storage. A storage system where storage servers do the comprehensive versioning of (distrusting) clients' all filesystem activity to provide detailed information for post-intrustion diagnosis and recovery of the compromised client systems. - this uses LFS-based technique for data versions and efficient journal-based structure for metadata versions (coz there will be a lot of metadata to store). - writes only go to a log sequentially (main idea was to improve write performance) - reads happen from the log so the original files apparently remain unchanged - to get large contiguous disk spaces (segments), they use some background segment cleaning methods - snapshot is a checkpoint in the log - the FS is quiesced, then a snapshot file is created to hold the original contents of changed blocks. - then these can be explicitly mounted (as readonly) - WAFL FileSystem is an FS designated to work in an NFS appliance. It is implemented as a tree of blocks rooted at the root inode, its metadata lives in files ('Anywhere') and is optimized for snapshots. - uses CoW to avoid duplication - a snapshot creates a duplicate of root inode and refer to the parent's blocks until they are modified - every directory in the FS has a hidden.snapshot file stored in NFS server - to ensure FS consistency WAFL maintains consistency points and uses NVRAM to log NFS requests it gets in between these points - CoW RO snapshots - need to be seperately mounted and they exist only as long as the snapped FS is mounted. - no snapshot of snapshot possible Compatibility - S4 (their implementation) is a user-level NFS server in Linux it directly accesses the disk through SCSI interfaces and exports NFSv2 interface to clients. - it has an object-based data store - I guess this amount of comprehensive versioning and the non-snapshot based approach probably does not suit our purpose implemented in sprite network filesystem - it is shipped as a custom operating system and hardware, thus expensive - not open source.

3 The tables below are from the ext3cow (coz its column is all marked :) ) and versionfs papers respectively : Elephant Applications will have to use syscalls such as the following to use versioning setcurrentepoch (timestamp) gethistory (file) => history setlandmark (file) unsetlandmark (file) setpolicy (file, policyid) groupfiles (filea, fileb) ungroupfile (file) provides the notion of an epoch view per process each process should do a syscall and set an epoch (some point-in-time), then all subsequent accesses to a versioned files refers to that epoch. it versions all files in the FS except those specified with KeepOne policy. files can be grouped together with a file group and a setlandmark syscall on a particular epoch can be done on a file, to make it retains the GOOD (in our case corresponds to when we kicked off the experiment?) versions. Does NOT support branching (mentioned as future work in their paper) and older file versions are ReadOnly. In summary, looks like we may have to create an application using their APIs to implement what we want.

4 could not find details about their FreeBSD implementation or usage info anywhere else (but what is provided in their papers). ext3cow A 'snapshot' command takes the snapshot of the FS and returns an epoch number. Subsequent accesses with the epoch number appended to it (foo@ ), fetch those versions of files. A snapshot for a single file can also be taken. Sample usage (from the paper) : # echo "This is the original foo.txt" > foo.txt # snapshot Snapshot on # echo "This is the new foo.txt." > foo.txt # cat foo@ This is the original foo.txt. # cat foo This is the new foo.txt. There is GUI based tool that lets one browse through in time and spawn a shell with the working directory at an earlier epoch. I think this comes closest to what we want. Other solutions provide either snapshot or file versions but this provides versioning at the granularity of a snapshot interval. using GUI tool's shell, we should be able to access the different versions of the same file simultaneously but it appears that this also provides only readable old versions this does not currently have version branching capability but its in their TODO list. also, they have disregarded FS subtree-level snapshotting on feature-vs-efficiency tradeoff they say that their research on ext3cow will be used as a platform for meeting the requirements set forth by electronic record management legislation on retention and access of electronic information and on achieving secure deletion in versioning systems this appears to be the most active (rather least inactive of the lot) they claim that a lot of users are using this and that it is used a platform for research in various places (Zap Project, Aging of versioning file systems at University of California Santa Cruz, & Practical time-shifting features at the University California, Berkeley) (GUI tool) Wayback need to explictly turn on versioning by remounting already mounted directories using wayback's mount this provides versioning in that path for all subsequent writes we move to an older version of a file by explicitly doing commands ('vrevert') or can see an older version (using 'vextract') does not seem to do user triggered versioning does not readily provide the notion different simultaneous views. older versions will have to be extracted out. does not provide version branching its a sourceforge project Wayback implemented as simple user-level scripts over FUSE FUSE requires 2.4 / 2.6 linux kernel din't find much activity (in the home page) since 2004, though issues mentioned: once a directory is versioned modifying without versioning can cause data corruption paper -
