3 What Is Realize Reader? Realize Reader gives students access to digital textbooks and assignments in an engaging, interactive learning environment. Realize Reader content includes video, interactive charts, graphs, and notebook service, in addition to basic features, such as annotations, highlights, and bookmarks. Students and teachers can access their Realize Reader content through Realize or on the go using the Chrome, Windows, or ios mobile apps. Books viewed in Realize Reader require active subscriptions with content providers. Subscriptions are not included with the Realize Reader app. Use Realize Reader Mobile Apps Students and teachers can access most Realize Reader content using the Chrome, Windows, or ios mobile apps. Once the content is downloaded, students can read a book or complete their assignments anywhere with or without an Internet connection. 1. Search for Realize Reader in the app store for your device: Chrome Web Store (for Chrome OS devices) Apple App Store (for ios devices) Microsoft Windows Store (for Windows 10 desktops and laptops) The Windows App functions on 2-in-1 (laptop-to-tablet) devices in laptop-mode using the attached keyboard for data entry. 2. Follow the app store instructions for installing or accessing the application and your content. 3

4 3. When Realize Reader opens on the bookshelf page displaying the books available to you, click a book to begin reading! The navigation between pages is blocked when a reading session has timed out. You must log in again to resume activity. Complete an Assignment Realize Reader provides a variety of tools and features, such as bookmarks, highlights, and glossary to help you complete your assignment. 1. In the bookshelf, click the thumbnail image to open the book. 2. In the reading pane, use the following features to help you complete your assignment: Click the back and next icons to turn pages forward and back. Type the page number into the Page box to go to a specific page. Click Table of Contents to access the book's Table of Contents. Click Glossary to access the Glossary, if available for the book. 4

5 Select text to Highlight words or a phrase and add an annotation. Click the settings icon to see the options for reviewing book information and setting a preferred font size. Click the Realize Reader logo in the upper-left corner to return to the bookshelf. 3. If an interactive activity is available, follow the instructions provided before moving forward in the assignment. 4. If the assignment contains a Notebook prompt, click the Notebook button, and then type a response in the text box. 5

6 5. When finished with the book, close Realize Reader and return to Realize to turn in your assignment. Use the Table of Contents The Table of Contents, displays a list of sections, units, or chapters for the current book while the reading pane continues to display the selected page. 1. Click Table of Contents in the menu bar. 2. The Table of Contents opens in a side panel and displays publishing information and a list of chapters or units for the current book. 6

7 3. In the Table of Contents, you can: Click the arrow icon to expand or collapse a section, unit, or chapter. Click a section, unit, or chapter title to open it in the reading pane. 3. Click the close icon to close the Table of Contents. The reading pane will continue to display the selected page. View the Glossary Some books provide glossary or multilingual glossary term definitions. Multilingual glossary definitions include the phonetic pronunciation, the part of speech, and multiple language options for the term definition. If the audio icon is displayed, an English or Spanish audio definition is also available. Open Glossary Definitions in the Reading Pane If the selected book contains a glossary, the glossary terms are highlighted in the reading pane. 7

8 1. In the reading pane, select a highlighted glossary term. The term's definition displays in the reading pane. 2. If the selected book supports a multilingual glossary, choose a language for the term's definition. 3. Close the definition to return full view of the reading pane. Find Glossary Definitions Using the Menu If the selected book contains a glossary, the definitions can be found and viewed outside of the reading pane using an alphabetic list of the terms in the Menu panel. 1. From an open book, click Glossary. 2. In the Glossary side panel, you can: Scroll the alphabetic list of terms associated with the current book. Click on a letter to go directly to a list of terms beginning with that letter. Click on a term to view its definition. 8

9 Use Annotations and Highlights Your students can use the Annotations & Highlights feature to create, update, and delete annotations and highlights in the text. With several color options available, choose a different color for questions, key concepts, and data points. You can copy and paste selected text using the keyboard shortcuts Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + V). Highlight Text or Add an Annotation 1. Select a word, sentence or paragraph to highlight. 2. Click Highlight and a highlight color or click Annotate and a highlight color, and then add annotation text. 3. Click the close icon. The annotated text is highlighted and an inline indicator flag displays in the front of the text. Change Highlight Colors or Edit an Annotation 1. Click on the highlight you want to change. 2. Click a highlight color and/or change the annotation text in Add Annotation. 3. Click the close icon to close Add Annotation. Delete Highlights or Annotations 1. Select the highlighted text you want to delete. 2. Click the close icon to remove the highlight or click Delete in Add Annotation. 9

10 Choose Settings The Settings feature, enables your student to select a text font size for all the books and view basic book information. Select Text Size 1. In an open book, click the settings icon in the menu bar. 2. Click Font Settings, and then select a text size icon to adjust the font size for ALL books available to you. 3. Click the close icon to return to the reading pane. View Book Information 1. In an open book, click the settings icon in the menu bar. 2. Click Book Information to view basic publishing information. 3. Click the close icon to return to the reading pane. 10
