EDEN An Epigraphic Web Database of Ancient Inscriptions Martin Scholz (FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg)
Outline Goals, Content, and Structure of EDEN Online Database Semantic Modelling Annotating Text and Triple Generation
Epigraphic Database Erlangen-Nürnberg Greek and Latin inscriptions from western Turkey Metropolis in Ionia Magnesia ad Maeander (Apollonia ad Rhyndacum) Google Maps: Metropolis, Magnesia, and Apollonia
Epigraphic Database Erlangen-Nürnberg Contains information for ancient historians and archaeologists Translations of inscriptions in DE, EN, (and TR,...) For scholars, students, pupils and the wider public Rich metadata and scholarly commentaries The online database accompanies a print edition Runs with no funding, only 1-2 student assistants Technical realisation with WissKI
The Software project partners Wissenschaftliche KommunikationsInfrastruktur = Scientific Communication Infrastructure WissKI is a virtual research environment (framework) that extends the CMS Drupal addresses object-centered research (especially from cultural heritage) adapts the Wiki approach of quick, collaborative editing is open source and downloadeble via GitHub natively stores data according to Semantic Web techniques uses the CIDOC CRM for semantic enrichment supported by
EDEN Accessing the Inscriptions Currently contains approx. 600 inscriptions (54 published)

Semantic Modelling in WissKI Albrecht Albrecht Dürer Dürer Albrecht Dürer P3 has note E82 Actor Appellation P131 is identified by E21 Person P14 carried out by E84 E84 Information Information Carrier Carrier P108i P108i was was produced produced by by E12 E12 Production Production Nürnberg P7 took place at E53 Place P87 is identified by E48 Place Name P3 has note Nürnberg Nürnberg
What's in an ontology path? data instance 1 schema is instance of concept 1 implicit property 1 instance 2 is instance of concept 2 property 2 instance 3 is instance of concept 3 data property value has datatype datatype explicit
Pathbuilder: The Semantic Backend in WissKI
Reprise: Annotating Text and Triple Generation annotated free text automatically extract triples structured data
Annotating Text Graphical Editor
Annotating Text Kinds of annotations Supported annotations Entities Person, Place, Dating, Term whatever categories are defined Events Relations Annotations are made on character level
Annotating Text Automatic Text Analysis
Person Relations in Inscriptions (current research) Recurring theme in EDEN's inscriptions: Genealogic information Affiliation to Deity / Temple Automatically identify and extract person relations. Reuse information for showing complex links
Encoding Annotations in HTML no TEI/EpiDoc Textual annotations are stored together with the text using RDFa + class attributes Problem: Pure RDFa is easily corrupted by mixed-in HTML elements / attributes => Basic information as RDFa <= triples! => Further information encoded as HTML classes <= not directly triples! => HTML custom data-* attributes could be used (but were not standardized in )
Extracting Triples from Annotated Text Problem: Out-of-the-box RDFa parsers don't return expected triples and cannot consult knowledge base in triple creation process => WissKI by default uses custom parser that constructs triples according to Pathbuilder definitions and uses local knowledge base for disambiguation / triple reuse => Central triple: <text> <refers to / is about> <entity> => use named graphs for storing/reverting extracted triples
Light-weight Reasoning Perform SPARQL updates to compute superproperties / superclasses transitive hull for certain relations shortcut properties => compute implicit triples to explore complex relations Problem: full automated reasoning too slow...
What comes next? EDEN evolves constantly but slowly! (currently no funding) Wishlist (not complete): More inscriptions to be published More information about people and deities Better search interfaces Integrate 3D scans and annotate them
