What s in store today... Who Am I? Course Overview Topics, approach, and goals Software Books and online resources Admin Stuff Schedule, grading, lab access Office Hours & Tutors Course website Pre-requisites & prior experience

Once Upon A Time...

PRACTICE Concepts and implementation in web design Basic understanding of graphic design principles Skills in using standard design software Animation Advanced open source developer tools Basic operating systems (Unix, Mac OSX, Windows)

How Will This Class Work? Each class I will lecture and demonstrate the use of software and technical skills The skill sets will build upon each other throughout the semester All slides and and files made in class will be available online Outside work is required for assignments. These can be done in the labs or on home computers Follow along in class and take notes, because not everything will be in these slides

What will we be using? Adobe Creative Cloud

Do I need to buy all this? Computers in the ITS Labs have the required software Third Avenue North Lab is located at 75 Third Avenue, Level C3 (downstairs) near 12th Street. Multimedia Lab is located in the Education Building, at 35 W. 4th Street, on the second floor. Adobe offers a 30 day free trial on CC and/or it can be purchased for a discount at the NYU computer store Some of the software we use throughout the semester is FREE to download This class does require a significant time commitment to complete the assignments

So what am I going to learn? Photoshop - 5 classes UNIX account // setting up your website - 2 classes HTML/CSS/Responsive Design - 8 classes Animated GIFs - 2 classes indesign - 3 classes Twitter Bootstrap - 3 classes Illustrator- 2 classes *This are approximate and are subject to change. We may find that we need to spend more or less time on certain topics and the schedule will adjust accordingly.

Accounts You should have an account on NYU home and on Blackboard For this class you will also have a special UNIX account on i6, which you do NOT need to request. You have been automatically been assigned this account/server space. More information to come on this... In order to receive credit for you work it must be posted to i6. Again more on this next class

Course Website

Exams & Grading Assignments 50% Midterm Exam 25% - (multiple choice) Final Exam 25% - (multiple choice) There will be certain Extra Credit opportunities throughout the semester

Academic Honesty For the purpose of this class, cheating is defined as: Copying all or part of another student s homework, project or exam and passing it as your own Allowing another student to copy all or part of your homework, project or exam in order to pass it it as their own If you find code or resources that you use online you must give credit. Simple letting me know that you use something is enough. Discussing concepts and strategies is fine, but you must hand it your own work.

Extra Help! Office hours: Thursdays after class from 9:30-10:30 in Room 328 There will be experienced teaching assistants at the ITS Lab to help you. Dates and times will be posted to the blog. Tutoring must NOT replace attendance Do not be afraid to look for answers online. The web is an amazing resource, and I use it all the time!

While in class... Arrive on time...in fact arrive 5 minutes early Refrain from conversations with classmates during class time If you re confused or I am going to quick PLEASE ask questions No cell phones and texting during class Computers are ok for note taking & following along No , facebook, twitter, tumblr, blogging, chatting, google hanging out, skyping, buzzfeeding, etc

QUESTIONS? COMMENTS? CONCERNS?
