Step by Step GIS Section 1 Contact the web page given below for the data required to do the exercises ( Before beginning the tutorials please visit the Preparation page, which will help a user obtain the appropriate PASDA data from our data catalog. This needs to be done only once as all the exercises use the same datasets. As seen below, the lessons are grouped into four sections of similar topics: Section 1 - Introductory ArcGIS - Viewing data, classifying features Exercise 1 - Viewing Data in ArcGIS is an introduction to the basic theme viewing properties of ArcGIS. This includes adding a theme, panning, and zooming. Exercise 2 - Classifying Features An introduction to feature classification, which includes using the legend to group data, change colors, adjust symbols, and normalize by secondary data. Section 2 - Introduction to Tables - Working with tables, changing the table display, editing values and adding fields Exercise 3 - Working With Tables An introduction to working with tables, covering topics such as selecting records, promoting, and identifying specific map records. Exercise 4 - Changing the Table Display Learn techniques for modifying tables. This includes hiding and displaying certain fields, creating aliases, and changing field widths. Exercise 5 - Editing Table Values & Adding Fields Learn how to edit tables within ArcGIS. This includes sorting and adding table fields. Section 3 - More With Tables - Joining tables, linking tables, join and summarizing Exercise 6 - Joining Tables Educates users how to join tables by finding common fields within both tables. In addition, the relationship between a source and destination table is covered. Exercise 7 - Linking Tables Educates users on the appropriate method and use of Linking tables. This includes an understanding of common fields and classification using joined tables. Exercise 8 - Join and Summarize Shows how to join tables based on a common field and create a new table based on a summary of values Section 4 - Analysis with ArcGIS tools - Building Queries, finding points in a polygon, selecting features in a distance, converting to shapefiles, layouts. Exercise 9 - Building Queries This exercise uses the Query Builder within ArcView to analyze and select specific data. In addition, basic table vocabulary is introduced. Exercise 10 - Finding Points in a Polygon Learn how to find features that are inside other features, for example, points within a polygon. 1

Exercise 11 - Selecting Features in a DistanceThis exercise demonstrates how to select features that are within a distance of, or are centered within, another specific feature. Exercise 12 - Converting to Shapefiles Learn how to convert a portion of a shapefile, into a new shapefile. Exercise 13 - Layouts This exercise covers how to create Layouts. This includes making a scale bar, north arrow, border, and title to create a map. Section 1 - Introductory ArcGIS - Viewing data, classifying features Ex1 - Viewing Data in ArcGIS Goal: In this exercise you will become familiar with the following concepts: Projects, Views, Table of Contents, and Layers. At the end of this exercise you should be able to: Create a new project Add one or more themes to a view Understand how to use the pull-down menus and buttons related to this exercise Make a theme active or inactive Use the Zoom In, Pan, and Zoom to Selected buttons Step 1. When ArcMAP opens you will see the ArcMap dialog box appear, Click on OK to start using ArcMap with a new empty map. Step 2. Click the "Add Data" button 2

Step 3. The Add Data dialog box displays. Navigate to c:\data\countbnd.shp. This may be in a different location, or wherever your downloaded data is saved. Step 4. Double-click on "countbnd.shp" to add the layer to the Table of Contents, or you can highlight the "countbnd.shp" then click on the "Add" button. The layer and its symbol appear in the Table of Contents. 3

Step 5. In ArcGIS you can add layers several ways. From the File pull-down menu, select Add Data or use the Add Data Button. to your Table of Contents. Navigate to where data is stored and select "Centre.shp" to add 4

Note: If your "Countbnd.shp" file was the first layer in the table of contents, you would not be able to see the layer underneath, which in this case is the streams for Centre County. Practice moving the shape files by pulling each of the shape files to the top by holding it with the left mouse button and dragging it to the top. 5

Step 6. Use the Zoom In tool to zoom to an area of interest in the View window. This can be done by holding down the left-mouse button, drawing a box, then letting go of the left-mouse button to enlarge the view. Another way to zoom in is to simply click the left-mouse button until you are zoomed in to a desirable location. Step 7. Use the Pan tool to move around in the view. In the View window click the Left mouse button, then move the map and release the mouse button. Step 8. Make "Centre.shp " active by clicking on the title in the table of contents. Notice that when a layer is active, the "Centre.shp" title will appear highlighted. Now that you have the "Centre.shp" active, Right Click and scroll down to Zoom To Layer. on this bar and your project will zoom to that layer.. Click 6

Step 9. Click on the Zoom to Full Extent button your shapefiles in the view..this will bring you back to the full extent of Step 10. Close ArcGIS or continue with the next exercise. Ex2. Table of contents, symbols, color schemes, classification, normalize, color ramps, and attributes. Goal: In this exercise you will become familiar with the following concepts: table of contents, symbols, color schemes, classification, normalize, color ramps, and attributes. At the end of this exercise you will know how to: Open the legend editor Select a legend type Select a value Classify Normalize Select colors, color ramps and apply them Step 1. Open ArcGIS and add the Countbnd.shp to your view. 7

Note: By default, ArcGIS assigns a single color to to all the counties (this is the single symbol legend type). You want to display the counties by population, so you will open the Legend Editor and design a new legend. Step 2. Left Click the Countbnd.shp symbol Selector box. (in this case the green box) to display the Symbol Options: Fill Color: displays a Color Palette Box for the active layer, Countbnd.shp or the counties. Outline Width: allows the user to change the width of the dividing features, in this case the boundaries between counties. Outline Color: allows the user to change the color of the boundaries, in this case black is the default color. 8

Click on a fill color that you would like to represent the counties. Take a moment and change the outline width and the outline color. Click OK to apply these changes. Next we will change the symbol meaning. Step 3. Left click "centre.shp" symbol to display the Symbol Selector box (in this case the blue line). The Symbol Selector box will give you options to change what your line means (Highway, Railroad, River, etc.). In this case the river symbol is already displayed. 9

Next we will change the colors to represent population ranges for the counties in Pennsylvania. We will do this by adding color ramps to countbnd.shp. Step 4. If you wanted to show the population by county, you would need to define quantities as colors. This arranges and displays the data in specific categories. Right click on countbnd.shp in the table of contents. This will bring up a box of choices. At the bottom of the box is properties, click on this choice. 10

11 Step 5. Scroll across the top to the Symbology tab. This will allow you to change the representation of multiple symbols in the table of contents: Features, Categories, Quantities, Charts, Multiple Attributes

12 Step 6. To represent counties by population as a function of color, we will need to choose the Quantities option. Under this option select Graduated Colors. The Value drop-down list allows you to choose from any of the attributes for the Countbnd.shp. We will choose the POP1990 option, since we want the colors to represent 1990's population. Note: ArcMAP will automatically choose a Color Ramp and Classification breaks for your project. Both of these functions can be altered to your own specific needs.

13 Step 7. Click OK. Now each county is shown as a color that represents a range of population values.
