Curse Descriptin The first mdule explres the varius cmputers available tday, their cmpnents and peripherals. It als examines hw sftware and hardware wrk tgether t perfrm cmputing tasks and hw sftware is develped and upgraded. Yu ll identify different types f sftware. And finally, yu ll examine what an perating system is, hw it wrks, and hw t manage it. The secnd mdule helps yu perfrm functins cmmn t the Micrsft Office applicatins, Wrd, Excel and PwerPint. Yu ll als lk frmatting text and dcuments, and the ability t use wrd-prcessing tls t autmate prcesses such as dcument review, security and cllabratin. Yu ll learn hw t build and use a spreadsheet efficiently, hw t srt and manipulate data using frmulas and functins, create simple but effective charts, and draw cnclusins based n tabular data and charts. In additin, yu ll learn hw t design, manage and mdify presentatins and identify different ways presentatins are distributed. The third mdule helps yu identify netwrk fundamentals and the benefits and risks f netwrk cmputing, identify varius types f electrnic cmmunicatin and cllabratin. This includes an understanding f the rules f the rad fr nline cmmunicatin and cmmn prblems assciated with electrnic cmmunicatin. Internet access capability Muse r ther cmpatible pinting device 101 enhanced keybard Printer (must have access rights t print) Sftware Requirements Micrsft Windws 7 Prfessinal Micrsft Office 2010 Prfessinal Windws Internet Explrer 9.0 The bjectives utlined in each lessn can be achieved by prperly using the material and exercises in this curseware, and by paying clse attentin t yur instructr. Yu shuld nt hesitate t ask questins if yu have prblems in wrking thrugh the material. All sftware prgrams used in this curseware are large and pwerful prgrams, with mre features than yu can master in a single curse. This curseware presents a tremendus amunt f material in a simple, easy-t-learn frmat. Yu shuld read ahead during the curse; yu shuld als reread regularly. This will increase yur retentin f imprtant cncepts and skills, and will help yu cpe with the size and pwer f these prgrams as yu cntinue t learn. The explanatins in this curseware are based n the default settings established during the installatin f the Micrsft Windws 7 and Micrsft Office 2010 prgrams. Yur cmputer (r the cmputers in the classrm lab) may be cnfigured differently. If s, please check with yur instructr (where applicable), r cnsult the apprpriate User s Guide t change the setup. If yu are using anther versin f Wrd, Excel, r PwerPint, yu will find that all f the cncepts are the same; what will change may be sme f the steps required t accmplish the task. Prerequisite Skills This curseware was designed t prvide the essential skills fr cmputer literacy, using three types f prgrams cmmnly fund in schl and business envirnments. It is intended fr thse wh have nt used a wrd prcessr, spreadsheet, r presentatins prgram previusly, r have minimal experience. Sme familiarity with using a muse and keybard can be helpful. 2

3 Wrking with the Data Files The exercises in this curseware require yu t use the data files prvided fr the bk. Fllw the instructins shwn t dwnlad the data files fr this curseware. 1 Launch yur brwser and navigate t the CCI Web site lcatin 2 Enter: 7310 in the Curseware # bx and click. 3 Select the student-data.exe file then click Run. Click Run again in the Internet Explrer Security Warning windw, if necessary. 4 In the WinZip Self-Extractr dialg bx, use the Brwse buttn t specify the Windws Desktp as the lcatin t unzip the file and then click Unzip. The Student flder cntaining the required student wrk files has nw been dwnladed t yur desktp. Yu can reinstall and use the wrk files as many times as yu like. Nte: All student data files have been checked fr viruses at the time f develpment. CCI and its develpers are nt respnsible fr any virus infectin that may ccur as a result f custmer r distributin channel manipulatin. Please ensure yur antivirus sftware is updated with the latest virus pattern t prevent new viruses frm infecting yur system.
