Events Interactions create event Events trigger code Code responds to users Scripts often respond to events by updating the content of the page (via DOM) which makes the page appear interactive 2

(Some) Event Types UI events occur when a user interacts with the browser s user interface (UI) work with window object UI Events load unload error resize scroll Description Web page has (just) finished loading Web page is unloading Browser encounters a JavaScript error or unavailable web resources Browser window has been resized User has scrolled up or down the page 3

(Some) Event Types Focus events occur when an element gains or loses focus Focus Events focus / focusin blur / focusout Element gains focus Focus loses focus Description Keyboard events occur when a user interacts with the keyboard Keyboard Events keydown keyup keypress Description User first presses a key User releases a key Character is being inserted 4

(Some) Event Types Mouse events occur when a user interacts with a mouse, trackpad, or touchscreen Mouse Events click dbclick mousedown mouseup mousemove mouseover mouseout Description User presses and releases a button over the same element User presses and releases a button twice over the same element User presses a mouse button while over an element User releases a mouse button while over an element User moves a mouse (not on a touchscreen) User moves a mouse over an element (not on a touchscreen) User moves a mouse off an element (not on a touchscreen) 5

(Some) Event Types Form events occur when a user interacts with a form element Form Events input change submit reset cut paste select Description Value in any <input> or <textarea> element has changed or any element with t he contenteditable attribute Value in select box, checkbox, or radio button changes User submits a form (using a button or a key) User clicks on a form s reset button User cuts content from a form field User pastes content into a form field Users selects some text in a form field 6

(Some) Event Types Mutation events occur when the DOM structure has been changed by a script Mutation Events DOMSubtreeModified DOMNodeInserted DOMNodeRemoved Description Change has been made to a document Node has been inserted as a direct child of another node Node has been removed from another node 7

How Events Trigger Code Select the element node the script will respond to Indicate which event on the selected node will trigger the response (bind an event to a DOM node) Event handling Specify the code to run when the event occurs 8

Example: Event Handling (Lazy) bind-event-lazy.html 9

Example: Event Handling (Tradition) bind-eventtradition.html 10

Example: Event Handling (Modern) bind-eventmodern.html 11

Example: Using Parameters with Event Listener bind-event-withparam.html 12

Example: Supporting Older Version of IE (w/o Param) bind-event-supportmultiple-browsers.html 13

Example: Supporting Older Version of IE (w/ Param) bind-event-withparam.html 14

Summary Events occur when user interacts with a web browser or a web page (screen). Binding specifies the event that can happen and on which element the event happens. When an event occurs on an element, it can trigger a JavaScript function. The function then manipulates the page to response to the user. 15
