2 1 Publishable summary 1.1 Projet objetives The projet has as its goal making knowledge work more effiient and effetive, by: Reduing information overload, whih makes it diffiult for users of information systems to easily find the information they need. Mitigating the effet of onstant task swithing, whih fores users to onstantly reprioritize their information needs. Enourage reuse of information, inluding proess information. has done this by drawing on three interrelated tehnology themes. Firstly, we use an understanding of the user s task ontext to prioritise information. This helps redue the effet of information overload by fousing the user s attention on the information he needs for his urrent task. It also mitigates the effet of onstant task swithing, sine as the user swithes from one task to another, information available to him or her is re-prioritised. The use of task ontext also enourages the sharing of information; a ontext an be shared, and with it the information assoiated with that ontext. Understanding the user s task ontext is ahieved through a ombination of exploiting expliit information from the user and the use of mahine learning to make inferenes from the user s behaviour. Seondly, the synergy of Web2.0 and formal semanti approahes is used to enourage the better sharing of knowledge. tehnology ombines the ease of use of Web2.0 tehnology with some of the power of formal semantis. This is illustrated in s use of the Semanti MediaWiki (SMW). It is also apparent in user-supported tagging, where users are free to reate tags for information objets, but an also make use of suggested tags. Thirdly, has developed tehnology to enourage the sharing of proess information. By this we mean in partiular the informal proesses whih we all use to ahieve our everyday professional tasks. has developed tools to enable the easy desription and sharing of proesses; and has used mahine learning tehniques to detet reurring user proesses and to reommend information to users based on the proess urrently being arried out. 1.2 Work undertaken and the projet s main results The platforms the AKWS and SMW makes use of two platforms; the Knowledge Workspae (AKWS), whih has been designed within the projet, and the Semanti MediaWiki (SMW) whih was developed prior to and has been extended in the projet. The AKWS is the modular platform whih provides the framework for: the management and exploitation of ontext; for user tagging; and for the reation and sharing of proess desriptions. The AKWS provides a taskbar, shown in figure 1, whih enables the user to manage ontext and initiate a variety of funtions. For example, the task pane and task wizard enable the user to reate proess desriptions; whilst the ontext visualiser enables the user to view the information, proesses and people assoiated with a partiular ontext. This means that within those appliations information an be filtered aording to the urrent ontext. Figure 2 illustrates this for Mirosoft Word. In the SMW the links between pages have assoiated, informal semantis. The Semanti MediaWiki is already widely used. In its funtionality has been extended by, e.g., the development of a lightweight ontology editor, shown in figure 3; a lightweight but powerful query faility, AskQ; and the apability to export to RSS, icalendar and vcard. onsortium 2011 Page 3 of (5)

4 Figure 3 A lightweight ontology editor for the SMW The ase studies The ase studies serve to validate and exploit the tehnology, and also as vehiles to demonstrate its benefits. They are in three distint setors: Teleommuniations tehnology is helping BT s tehnial and sales speialists to share and reuse their expertise, and to loate the skills they need to respond rapidly to ustomer needs. A partiular emphasis is on the rapid reation of high-quality ustomer proposals. Consultany Aenture onsultants also need to share knowledge rapidly and effetively, for example in order to reate ustomer proposals. There is the added hallenge that Aenture s onsultants are distributed aross the globe. In addition, tehnology is being used to make it easier for Aenture people to find information everything from a orporate poliy to an organisational hart. Engineering tehnology is being used to guide Cadene eletronis designers through the omplex proess of designing an integrated iruit. The aim is to make knowledge about design proesses expliit and shareable. That way the knowledge aquired by experiened designers an be shared with the less experiened. methodology has developed models to assess the osts and benefits of ontology and folksonomy-based systems, and a tool-suite to failitate the use of some of these models. has also developed methods for validating the usability of information systems, and for measuring the business impat of knowledge management tools. 1.3 Potential impat and use of final results tehnology is available for use. The AKWS is freely available for non-ommerial purposes from the projet website. The major SMW extensions are available as open soure software.
