Final Project Design Document Heidi Weber Purpose: The purpose of the web site I will be designing is to showcase the artifacts, knowledge, and competencies gained throughout the Instructional Technology (IT) Master s Program at the University of Akron. The artifacts, knowledge, and competencies will be divided into four categories: Technology in the Work Place, Technology Leadership, Technology and Instructional Design, and Product Development. Detailed information to be included on each page is in the Information Included and How It Meets the Goal of the Web Site portion of this paper. In addition to these pages, there will be a link to my resume, a home page and a personal page so the viewer will know something about the non-academic side of me. The website will be in the form of an electronic portfolio (eportfolio) saved to Zipspace as well as copied to compact discs (cd). This eportfolio will meet one of the requirements for attaining my IT Master s from the University of Akron. It will also serve as a tool for applying for teaching positions. Needs Assessment: The eportfolio addresses two needs. One in required by the University of Akron, the other is a personal need. There are two major portfolios required by the University of Akron before an IT Master s candidate can graduate. One is the eportfolio, which this project will address. The need for beginning this portfolio early in the program is the amount of documentation that is to be included in it. The University of Akron College of Education web site offers suggestions and lists the requirements for the eportfolio. There are also rubrics on the website to follow. Artifacts from every graduate level class taken in the program are to be included and starting the process early will alleviate headaches as graduation approaches. Another need for beginning this project now is to have fellow IT candidates and instructors critique and offer meaningful suggestions to better the site. When the eportfolio is copied to a cd that is self-starting a personal need will be met. The cd will be sent to prospective employers when applying for teaching or some other type of employment. In light of the current economic situation, it is vital that employers notice your resume, and sending a cd with a cover letter could help this happen. I spoke with two administrators about sending a cd and both said this was an excellent idea, that if done well, it would certainly get noticed and would probably generate an interview. Audience: There are two distinct audiences that will access this eportfolio. The first is the Portfolio Review Panel at the University of Akron. This panel consists of three professons in the IT program. According to the University of Akron College of Education website, two of the three professors need to approve the eportfolio before the prospective candidate can graduate. The initial deadline date is at least two months before each semester s graduation date, allowing for revisions and resubmission to the panel for final approval. Instructional Technology, Educational Foundations and Leadership 1
The second audience is a prospective employer. The eportfolio, saved to a self-starting cd, can be sent to school districts or other employers along with a cover letter when applying for a position. Therefore the eportfolio should be professional in appearance with no errors, it should be easy to navigate and pleasing to the eye with no distractions. After speaking with two superintendents, both indicated that having a cd that is easy to use, is self-starting, and the information is clearly delineated would help secure a prospective candidate an interview. Content/Subject and its fit with web site goals: According to the University of Akron College of Education, eportfolio requirements web site, there are specific requirements that are to be met for each of the pages mentioned in the first section of this paper. These requirements include: Application to the Work Place o Demonstrate the use of productivity tools. o Demonstrate the knowledge of equity, ethics, legal and human issues concerning the use of computers and technology. o Describe and implement basic troubleshooting technique for multimedia computer systems with related peripheral devices. o Demonstrate exploration, evaluation, and use of computer/technology resources including applications, tools, software, and associated documents. Technology Leadership o Demonstrate knowledge of terminology related to computers and technology. o Observe the use of technology in work setting where technology components and skills are being taught. o Develop plans to configure computer or other technology systems. o Identify and describe strategies to support development of organizational policies, procedures and practices related to the use of instructional technology. o Research, evaluate, and develop recommendations for purchase of hardware and software and use of technology in the workplace. o Demonstrate knowledge of budgeting and funding options for technology. Technology and Instructional Design o Demonstrate use of broadcast instruction, video conferencing, web-enhanced instruction, and other distance learning applications. o Demonstrate current instructional principles, research and appropriate assessment practices as related to the use of computers and technology resources in the curriculum. o Design student learning activities that foster equitable, ethical and legal use of technology by students. o Demonstrate basic principles of instructional design associated with the development of multimedia and hypermedia learning materials. o Develop instructional units that involve compiling, organizing, analyzing and synthesizing information and use technology to support these resources. Instructional Technology, Educational Foundations and Leadership 2
o Design and practice methods and strategies for teaching problem-solving principles and skills using technology resources. Technology and Product Development o Demonstrate knowledge of imaging device such as scanners, digital cameras, and/or video cameras with computer systems and software. o Apply productivity tools for crating multimedia presentations. o Develop hypermedia and multimedia products that apply instructional design principles. o Identify examples of emerging programming, authoring, or problem solving. The inclusion of artifacts, videos, or audio clips for these bullet points will demonstrate to the review panel and prospective employers the knowledge and skills gained in the IT program. The thoughtful design of the site will not frustrate employers or the panel and will be easy to navigate. Audio clips will not detract from the eportfolio, but will enhance the content. Presentation of information: The eportfolio will be designed as a web site. The site will open with a home page that will feature a graphic with a notebook. On the lines of the notebook will be links to the various pages included in the eportfolio. The graphic will be on the left side of all the pages to be used as a navigational tool, allowing the viewer to go from page to page without returning to the home page to navigate the site. Links will change color when they have been selected. All the pages will have the same color scheme and navigational tools. Depending on the length of the page, anchor tags will be included to return the viewer to the top of the page if desired. At the bottom of each page, as a footer, there will also be links to the other pages as well as the home page. There will also be a link to contact me at the bottom of each page. These are secondary navigational links (in addition to the links on the notebook) to provide the viewer with a smooth visit to the site. Rationale for organization: The site will be organized so that the viewer can easily navigate from one page to another. Photos will have captions, videos will have side bars so that the view will understand the reason that the clip is included. Each page will have an explanation of how the skills gained underscore the need for these skills in a school district or other place of employment. Media, acquisition or development, and rationale for using: The media used for this eportfolio will support the site. This could include personal videos, audio clips, personal digital photos (which may or may not be enhanced using PhotoShop), or clip art downloaded from Microsoft.com. If a photo or clip art is copyrighted, I will not use it, or will strive to obtain permission from the its creator to use it. When using photos of my class or audio clips of peers or students, I will be sure to obtain signed permission forms allowing me to use the Instructional Technology, Educational Foundations and Leadership 3
image or voice recordings. I would also like to have a graphic as a header on each page. There should be continuity on every page so the color scheme, header, footer and navigational tool will be the same. All graphics, audio clips, photos, or videos will enhance the viewer s knowledge of the skills I have gained through my graduate program. Audio clips will be started and stopped by the viewer and will not loop. Color scheme and rationale: The color scheme will support the desired professional appearance of the eportfolio. After looking at many eportfolios on the Internet, I would like to use a dark tan frame as the background. Text will appear in a white text box or table and the text itself will be black. I intend to make the line around the text box or table to be a thin dark red line. The graphic for the header should support this color scheme, or be manipulated using paint to coordinate. These colors will not be jarring or over power the main purpose of the eportfolio to showcase what I have accomplished. Outline of web site organization: A drawing, graphic, AND text outline reflecting the site s organization and navigation Home page with notebook graphic, links and appropriate quote Personal Page Statement of Career Goals Information about the non-academic side of me A photo Resume Resume outlining educational background as well as work related experiences Letters of Reference from a parent, co-worker and administrator Application to the Work Place PowerPoint of how to Create a PowerPoint presented at a school inservice Letters of testimony from co-workers about how I helped them with technology problems Technology Leadership Statements from teachers I have helped with technology Technology Committee information from Stafford Technology and Instructional Design Link to Instructional Design Project (2 nd Life Website) Photos of the use of the Document camera in Social Studies Short video of student working in computer lab Technology and Product Development Link to Webquest and photos of students completing it Link to Student Digital Camera project As this project progresses, items will be added to each of these categories. Individual page content is yet to be finalized. Instructional Technology, Educational Foundations and Leadership 4
Graphic Organizer of the Design Home Page Personal Page Work Place Leadership Design Development All arrows are two way, signifying that there will be links on every page to go back to the previous page or pages or to go forward without having to return to the home page to select a new page.
