Export/Import Blackboard/Canvas While Blackboard and Canvas are similar in functionality, they operate differently. Because of the differences, some types of Blackboard content import into Canvas perfectly, and others become disorganized or misplaced. This guide will provide an overview of best practices when copying Blackboard (Bb) course content into Canvas. Oregon State University, who is presently migrating to Canvas from Bb, separated different areas of a Bb course and organized them into three recommendations: Best imported content to use; Best content to gather separately; and Best to start fresh. Import from Blackboard Gather separately and upload Start fresh Announcements Assignments Discussion Boards Grade Center Tests, surveys and pools Course files and documents Web and media links Course Organization Groups and Group Tools Wiki Pages Import from Blackboard Announcements, Discussion boards These tools transfer well to Canvas. With imported Announcements, check your text for references to Blackboard. Be sure to check the Availability and Due dates in Discussion boards. Note that there are no tools equivalent to Blackboard s "Glossary" or "Tasks" in Canvas, so the content from those tools will transfer to the Pages section of your Canvas course. Assignments and Grade Center These tools will import hand-in-hand, though you will need to delete several Blackboard gradebook categories from Canvas Assignment groups. Note: SafeAssign is a Blackboard-only tool. During this pilot we have no alternative, however Ball State is investigating alternatives. Tests, Surveys and Pools Tests, Surveys and Pools will all import into the Quizzes section. Note that Pools will not show up on the main Quizzes page, but are accessible by going to Quizzes > Manage Question Banks. Note: Some quiz and survey question formats do not transfer to Canvas (Hot Spot; Quiz Bowl). Matching questions that have images in the answers must be fixed. Be sure to check multiple choice, fill in the blanks, essay, matching, numerical, and formula question types before publishing the quiz or survey. If a question format is not supported by Canvas, the question will become a text-only question (students will not have the option to answer). 1

Gather Separately and Upload Course Files and Documents Because Blackboard folders are nested, your course files may be hard to find in a new Canvas course (these are typically your syllabus, Word docs, PowerPoint slides, PDF s any files you have uploaded for students to read). Files import to Canvas within two folders; you may need to clean up duplicate files if your Blackboard course had been copied a few times. When working with files, the easiest way to get them to Canvas is to upload them from your computer. But if you do not have access to the desired files, we recommend downloading the imported course files and documents to a.zip file, then importing the content you want directly into your Canvas course's Files section. This way, your files will be easier to find and organize. View instructions here on downloading folder content to a.zip file. Web Links Web links will be imported to Canvas (to Modules), but descriptions and attachments are not brought over from Blackboard. The best option is to recreate the link, include the description and attachment, and display it in a Page or content area. If you have a lot of links in your Blackboard course, it may be best to keep track of the text and urls in a separate document on your computer so you can quickly add them to Canvas Pages or content areas. Another option is to use dual monitors, having Bb on one monitor and Canvas on the other. Links to Media If a URL link does not have an attachment or description, it may work but may have security issues depending on the type of link and location of it. Some options for making these more user friendly for media specifically: Ensure any YouTube links start with and not the redirect Edit the URL link and set it to open in a new window. Create a new Page and add the URL link within the page instead so it opens in a new window. Start Fresh Course Organization Unless you are using the Modules tool in Blackboard to organize your course, a majority of your course content will come over as Pages. You will have a page for each item you have created in Blackboard. If your course is extensively built out in folders using content items, it is far easier to recreate that content in Canvas. Groups and Group Tools Groups and group tools simply do not transfer over. Although the import process creates a page for some of them, they are generally blank (or display little information) and have no enrollments or tools connected to them. Use Canvas' Groups feature to create student groups instead. Wikis Although Wikis technically transfer over to the Pages section during an import, the pages de-link upon import, and grading options are not retained. One option is to copy and paste the content of each wiki page into the Pages section of your Canvas course, then link them together. 2

Exporting Bb Course Documents and Files 1. From your Control Panel in Bb, select Files 2. Click on the name of your course (a list of files will appear in a new window) 3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select the Show All button. 4. Scroll to the top and enable the check box located next to the words File Type. 5. Click Download Package and select where you will download the files (some browsers automatically place the file in your Downloads folder.) Importing your Bb files into your Canvas Course 1. In your Canvas Course, select the Files from the left menu. 2. Select the Upload button in the upper right corner of screen. 3. Select Choose File, and navigate to and select the export package you downloaded from Bb. 4. A dialog box will ask Would you like to expand the contents of the file into the current folder or upload the Zip file as is? Select the Expand It button. 5. Once the upload has completed, you can review and organize the Files you uploaded. Archiving Bb Course Content, Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, Grade Center, Tests, Surveys and Pools The easiest way to move this content is to create and archive in Bb. The archive is the packages that contains all (or selected) information from your Blackboard course. 1. Select Control Panel. 2. Select Packages and Utilities on the left side of the screen and click Export Package. 3. On the Export Course page, do the following: Select the option to Copy links and include copies of the files in the course default directory under Course Files Default Directory. Select the option to Copy links and include copies of the files in the course default directory under Files Outside of the Course Default Directory. 4. Under Select Course Materials: Select the Select All button. 5. Click Submit. 6. When you select Submit you will be returned to the Export/Archive Course page, the system begins to create the course package. When the package is complete, you will receive an from the system. When you receive the , select the Refresh button to see the course package link. Select the link to download the Zip filed, be sure to note where you save it. Importing Bb Course Content, Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, Grade Center, Tests, Surveys and Pools into Canvas 1. In your Canvas course, select Settings from the course menu on left. 2. Select Import Content into this Course button from the menu to the right. 3. From the Import Content Window, in the dropdown box next to Content type, choose Blackboard 6/7/9 export.zip file. 4. Next to Source, select the Choose File button and navigate to and select the export package you downloaded from Bb and click the Open button. 5. Next to Content, enable the All content radio button. 6. Select the Import button. 3

Troubleshooting Possible Problems 1. Blackboard items may come over as uneditable HTML objects. Action Required: If you click on an imported item in a module, and there is no option to edit the content page, then they have been imported as HTML files. These items can be copied and pasted into Canvas Content Pages which will allow editing. 2. Links to files may maintain their Blackboard links-not the actual filename-based link. This could produce a file not found error in Canvas. Action Required: These files are most likely in the Canvas Files section but not correctly linked. All links will need to be updated to reflect the location in Canvas. 3. Respondus settings will not come over for tests requiring Respondus in Blackboard. There will be an access password on these tests, and they will not require Respondus. Action Required: All tests that will require Respondus Lockdown browser will have to edited to remove the access password, and check the box to require Respondus Lockdown Browser. 4. Some files will generate errors and will not be exported. For this reason we ask faculty to verify that they have all files needed. Action Required: The files may be located in the Canvas Files section. If they are not there, they will need to be recovered from a different source or your Blackboard course. 5. All announcements from Blackboard will be imported into Canvas. Action Required: All faculty should visit the announcements section in Canvas and delete any old announcements that are not needed. 6. The file structure in the Canvas Files area will not be clean. The import procedure will generate a lot of HTML files and content folders. Action Required: The desired file structure should be created in Canvas, and all files moved to the appropriate location. 7. All "Grade Categories" will come over from Blackboard, including a duplicated Assignments (one from Canvas, one from Blackboard), a Weighted Total and Total column from Blackboard (even though they are not actually total columns, only named that from Blackboard). Action Required: All faculty should click on Assignments in Canvas to view Grade Groups. Duplicates, and the Total and Weighted Total Groups should be deleted. Faculty should verify that assignments are in the appropriate grade groups. 8. Nested modules are not possible in Canvas, so any items in nested Blackboard content areas may not import properly. Action Required: Items in Canvas modules can be dragged and dropped within or between modules. An appropriate module structure should be create in Canvas that does not require nesting. 9. Due dates and availability dates may not transfer from Blackboard correctly. Action Required: All due dates and availability dates for assignments, quizzes, discussions, etc. should be verified as correct. 10. Possible points for anything that is graded may not transfer from Blackboard correctly. Action Required: All possible point values for assignments, quizzes, questions in quizzes, discussions, etc. should be verified as correct. 11. Any references to Blackboard in the course materials should be removed. Action Required: Any references to Blackboard Learn in Syllabi or course content should be removed and replaced with Canvas. 4

12. Some items in modules will not correctly populate (such as files) in Canvas modules after importing. Action Required: These files should be in the Files section within Canvas. These items will need to be added to the appropriate modules in Canvas. 13. No student data will be exported. Action Required: There is no way for student data to be exported with the course. Any student data that you would like to keep will need to be manually downloaded by the instructor. This includes the Blackboard grade center. 14. Content from Blackboard Group Discussion Boards will not be exported. Action Required: This is considered student data and cannot be exported with the course. Any group discussion topics should be copied from Blackboard and pasted into any text editor for future use. 15. Content from Blackboard Collaborate will not be exported. Action Required: It is not possible to directly transfer Blackboard Collaborate content from Blackboard Learn to Canvas. All recordings will need to be completely recreated or converted to mp4 and downloaded by the person who created the recordings. 16. Turnitin Assignments will not be exported. Action Required: It is not possible to directly transfer Turnitin assignments from Blackboard Learn to Canvas. All Turnitin assignments will need to be completely recreated in Canvas. 5

Blackboard Canvas How is Canvas Different? Make Course Available Announcements Files Blackboard Content Items Discussion Forums Publish Course Announcements Files Pages Discussions Canvas courses are unpublished as a default. Instructors must "publish" their course for students to access it. Publishing a course is irreversible- - once published, a course stays published however you can change the start date of the course. Users can receive notifications via Facebook, Twitter, & text. Canvas allows students to comment on an announcement if instructor allows. Announcements appear on the User Dashboard. Canvas has the ability to add RSS feeds. Everything you upload or copy into Files is accessible to students by default. You can create folders to organize materials; folders and items can be locked. Drag & drop files into folders. All files in this area can downloaded as a.zip file. You can upload a.zip file to this area and Canvas will unzip it for you. Pages are essentially a Wiki (you can edit and track their history). You can grant the ability to edit the Page to students. Pages can include text, video, links to your files, YouTube, NJVid video files and links to other course content such as assignments, discussion boards etc. If you customize the Home Page layout of your Canvas course, you'll be creating a special page named Front Page. Pages can be linked to other Pages. Can require users to post to the discussion before viewing other replies. Instructors and students can easily view/filter posts. Receive notifications via social web services, text, etc. Group Discussions are seamlessly integrated into Group Pages. In order for students to attach a file to a post, instructor must allow file attachments in Course Settings. 6

Blackboard Canvas How is Canvas Different? Send Messages/Conversa tions Private messages appear in your Conversations Inbox; Notifications will push out to , Twitter, Facebook, Text Message depending upon your selection. Discussion responses can be accessed from Inbox. Messages can include file attachments, webcam recordings, audio or video uploads, or just text. Conversation messages are also generated by a comment made by a student or instructor on an assignment. Assignments Assignments Canvas uses a SpeedGrader. It gives the instructor the ability to comment/markup a document, without downloading the student s submission. When an Assignment is created, it is added to the Assignment page, Syllabus and Calendar. If updated, all links are updated. You must create an assignment to create a column in the Gradebook. Interactive rubrics can be used for grading. Students can submit multimedia assignments Instructors can leave multimedia comments. Peer Review assignments can be created. Tests/Quizzes /Surveys Quizzes/Surveys Quizzes/Tests/Surveys are automatically submitted if it is a timed assessment. Timer can be adjusted for individual students to allow for extended time. Instructor can selectively allow an additional attempt for a student. Tests can be edited after student submissions and are automatically regraded. Instructor can add Fudge Points. Test questions and answers can contain audio/video/images. Canvas does not have Hot Spot questions types available at this time. 7

Blackboard Canvas How is Canvas Different? No Equivalent SpeedGrader Grade/give feedback on all submissions for an assignment/test quickly in one place. You can mark up the submitted file by adding comments, drawing, highlighting or text. Able to download file as annotated PDF. ipad app is available for the SpeedGrader (Free). Record audio and video feedback for each student assignment. Sort students in various ways so that you work on them alphabetically, or by submission date, or anonymously (their names can be hidden from the teacher), or by whether or not they ve submitted the assignment. Grade Center Grade Book You must create an assignment to create a column in the Gradebook. The SpeedGrader tool displays submitted assignments, grading rubric, and media comment options all in one interface without downloading files. Grades can be weighted. Easily sort columns in one click by due date or assignment group. Instructors can curve grades. Instructors can Mute assignments. Message students who haven't submitted yet, scored less than or more/less than a certain criterion on an assignment. Download submissions from the grades area or just view them online in Canvas. Create text or media comments to provide assessment feedback. Students can message instructor within the grade column. Columns for assignment groups are shaded, and appear at far right of Gradebook by default. Rubrics Rubrics Integrates with gradable items. Ability to add media comments and integration with SpeedGrader interface. You can override the grade the rubric produces. Student viewable. 8

Blackboard Canvas How is Canvas Different? Modify Course Menu Modify Course Menu At this time, Canvas does not allow you to create unique course navigation menu links nor rename existing menu links. You can hide menu items from students. Modules are used in Canvas for organizing content. You can also rearrange the order in which these navigation menu items are displayed. Calendar Calendar You can copy the calendar feed link into any calendar app that takes ical feeds (Google Calendar, ical, Outlook, etc.) Calendar is automatically populated with items that have Due Dates. Drag & drop items on calendar to make changes in dates. Any change made is applied automatically to all objects associated with that item in various areas of the course. Instructors and students can view multiple course calendars in one view. Each user also has a personal calendar (listed as his/her name) for events that aren t class- related. Calendar items will be listed in the Syllabus page automatically. The calendar has a scheduling tool. Learning Units Modules Modules are similar to folders/learning Modules in Blackboard. Drag & drop for ordering Modules and module content. Can set Module prerequisites and Module completion requirements. Can require students to go through Module requirements sequentially. Modules can be "locked" until a given date. Groups Groups Groups have access to many course tools including Announcements, Pages, Files, Discussion, Conferences and Collaboration. Notification Dashboard Recent Activity Recent Activity links allow you to expand, remove or navigate to that item within the course. 9

Blackboard Canvas How is Canvas Different? No Equivalent Communication Preferences You can add additional contact methods besides which is the default. (Text, Twitter, Facebook, Personal ). Define the objects that trigger the notification. No Equivalent Syllabus Connected to course calendar. Provides organizational view of course based on assignment and quiz due dates. As you create/edit objects in the course, the Syllabus reflects the new or adjusted content. Objects on the Syllabus are hyperlinked to content. Journal Blog Workaround: Text Assignment Submission Workaround: Discussion Board or 3rd Party Tool The page can be edited for customization purposes. Canvas does not have a separate Journal tool. Users are encouraged to create a Text Entry Assignment instead. Have students use a 3rd party application such as Blogger.com and share the URL with the class or create them their own Discussion Board in the course or a Group. No Equivalent Conferences This tool uses Big Blue Button technology. Allows for webcam, voice, chat, white board and desktop sharing. Conferences are recordable and accessible for up to 14 days. No Equivalent Collaborations Allows faculty and students to easily integrate Google Docs and Ether Pad technology directly into their course. No Equivalent Attendance Tool Can easily take attendance based off a class list or seating chart. An assignment called Roll Call is created in the course. No Equivalent LTI Tools Canvas has the ability for instructors to integrate LTI s directly in their course (i.e. TEDEd, Khan Academy). Statistic Tracking Course/Student Analytics Course Statistics identify which content items students are interacting with. Student Analytics identify not only specific user tracking but assignment and grade distribution trends. Mobile App Mobile App There are 2 free mobile apps available to download. The Canvas App for ios and Android as well as the SpeedGrader app for the ios Tablet only. 10
