HOW TO WRITE USER STORIES (AND WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT DO) Stuart Ashman, QA Director at Mio Global Bob Cook, Senior Product Development Manager, Sophos
Welcome This presentation will discuss Writing user stories in an agile environment Writing user stories to facilitate good developer habits Writing user stories for testability Writing user stories that result in success for the business
Who Writes User Stories? Needs the three amigos to work together Business Analyst / Product Manager Developers Testers May have an additional amigo for UX
Role and Ownership Business Analyst / Product Manager Customer or Customer Proxy Owns the requirements Owns the justification for requirements Owns the decision to change requirements
Role and Ownership Testers Owns the testing artifacts and tools Owns the risk analysis for business decisions Does not own decisions (and probably shouldn t) Developers Owns the implementation Does not own requirements (and probably shouldn t)
(BA) Customer s Perspective I want to make sure I get what I wanted I want to ensure I get that as quickly as possible I want to be sure what I get works well I want to see a demo frequently
Tester s Perspective I want to clearly understand what is expected I want to clearly understand what is changing So, that I can understand the risks and help avoid or mitigate them I want to help prove we delivered what the customer wanted and that we built that solution well
Developer s Perspective I want to clearly understand what is expected I want to design the best solution that meets the expectations I want to deliver that solution efficiently I want to get feedback quickly to know I did this well
Why Do We Write Stories? Our species has always shared information through stories. Science tells us that our brains are more active and engaged when we hear or tell a narrative. We must engage the three (or four) amigos inclusively in a story
Encouraging Good Developer Habits Ensuring we take the time to clearly understand the requirements Thinking of and designing tests before we design a solution (TDD) Engaging others with skills in risk analysis and test design to improve the solution design
Encouraging Testability Enabling test first approach Providing opportunity to positively influence design Facilitating automation
User Story Example #1 On-access scanner finds malware Malicious files should be blocked Clean files should not be blocked System response time should be unaffected
User Story Example #1 Things that are wrong with this story: Overly broad; this is a BIG task for developers Doesn t define malicious vs. clean Doesn t define block Unachievable performance requirements
User Story Example #2 Button class gets Verify() method Works on square and round buttons Button code should check whether its active or inactive Return TRUE if active Return FALSE if inactive
User Story Example #2 Things that are wrong with this story: No measurable customer value Developer centric; no end-to-end functionality How can you test this (outside of unit tests)?
User Story Example #3 API: CRUD API for Settings As an API user, I can retrieve, create, update and delete settings, so that I can set properties for viewing health reports
User Story Example #3 Things that are wrong with this story: Scope is too broad - 4 API endpoints or verbs Implies we know who or what an API user is Implies we know why we need to create, read, update or delete settings for health reports No indication of constraints or limitations any limits to how many settings? Implies we know what these settings are and why they matter
Attributes of Good User Stories Clear definition of who the customer is (who is this for) Visible and measurable customer value (why they care) Clear definition of requirements and constraints (the what) Clear definition of done (know when we are done) High level design of the solution (the how) The right size and impact achievable within a sprint the appropriate thing to work on now
Indicators of Bad User Stories (1/2) No clear indication of what we are being asked to deliver Who this is for? Why do they need it? What does DONE look like? How do we verify it does what we want? How do we verify it does NOT do what we DON T want?
Indicators of Bad User Stories (2/2) Not clear what is changing Insufficient detail about user impacts No specific plan of API changes Not clear what the effects of the change may be Who else might be affected? Other teams? Lack of discussion for migration, upgrade scenarios Security implications? Performance implications?
Story map Building significant new functionality for any product requires more effort than a single story in a single sprint Like a road map good story planning should create a story map Series of stories that link together into larger functionality Each subsequent story should add incremental, end-to-end value Need to be aware of inter-story dependencies Sometimes you can do stories in parallel, and sometimes you can t
