1 Final Site Guide: Part 2 Embedding & Linking Stuff (documents, videos, sound files) Embed? Like in my bed? Nah. embed refers to adding multimedia to a web page by either uploading the file or using special computer code. Don t worry, you don t have to know anything about writing the code copying and pasting is all that s involved! Embedding or Linking Menu Buttons:? All linking buttons are available through the full pop-up editor. The general link button is also available in the simple editing window. To link something, it means you have text that is linked to a place on the internet, either on our school site, or a link that is outside of our school site. Links can ALSO direct users to documents, sound files, videos, slideshows, and web pages. To embed media means you are taking the actual media player and placing it on the page. Instead of a link to a YouTube video, you can actually play the video on the same page. Instead of linking to a sound file, the sound file looks like a player that you can interact with on the same page. FinalSite allows us to embed media in Flash, Shockwave, Media Player, and Quicktime, which are formats used widely for video and sound. We can also embed photos. This general link button will allow you to not only add hyperlinks to your page, but it will also give you access to the media menu for all types of links. When in doubt, click on this one. This button also gives you the most options. Use this button when you want to link to a web page that already exists on the PJA web site. This button allows you to link to a document that is uploaded to FinalSite. You can select a document that is already uploaded or upload one from this screen. Click on this button if you want to link to a video or a sound file that lives on the school web site. Use this button to break a link you have inserted. Use this button to embed a photo on your page. Use this button to embed videos or sound files. 1

2 Documents How to Save as PDFs From MS Word: Adding documents to your FinalSite page is simple. When embedding documents, consider first saving your files as PDFs (files ending in a.pdf these are Adobe Reader files). PDFs are not easily edited, so your intended directions, numbers, and deadlines stay put. Saving MS Word Document as PDFs: >Open your MS Word document. >Go to the SAVE AS menu. >Select PDF or XPS in the save as menu. >Name the document and select which folder you would like to save it in. (Ps. You can name it the same thing, because the file extension will be different. MS Word documents automatically end in.doc or.docx and PDFs end in.pdf. Avoid saving MS Word documents at.docx, as many people do not have the skills to convert these if they have older versions of the software.) Link a Document on Your FinalSite Page: You can embed virtually ANY type of file in your web page. This includes MP3s, MS Word documents, PowerPoint, photo files (jpegs/.jpgs), etc. Keep in mind that for any document you want to embed, it must be uploaded to the FinalSite File Manager. >Go to PAGE MANAGER and select the page you want to work with. >Open the full pop-up editor. >Compose text for linking the document. >Select the text with your cursor. 2

3 Link a Document on Your FinalSite Page, Continued: >Click the INSERT LINK BUTTON: >Click on the BROWSE button: >The BROWSE button will take you to the Final Site My Web Site Files screen. This is where you can upload any media (file) that you would like to embed in your finalsite page. 3

4 Link a Document on Your FinalSite Page, Continued: >Click on the red UPLOAD FILES link at the top of the screen. >Click the BROWSE button to locate the file you want to embed on your page. >Double click on the file you want to embed on the page. >Click the RED UPLOAD BUTTON. >Double-click on the FILE LINK visible in your MY WEB SITE FILES screen: 4

5 Link a Document on Your FinalSite Page, Continued: >You will now see the link to your file listed in the LINK URL bar. >In the TARGET drop-down menu, select open in new window (blank). This opens a smaller window when the user clicks on the link, so they do not navigate away from your web page. >Click the INSERT button. >Click SAVE in the top right corner of your full pop-up editor screen. >Click RED SAVE THIS PAGE red button on bottom right of editing screen for page. >Check to see if the link works: Click on the unpublished tab to see your page before it is published. Remember, you can link any kind of file to your page, as long as you upload it to FinalSite first 5

6 Uploading Media to Your My Web Site Files: If you know that you will be linking a whole chapter of activity sheets, you might want to upload all the documents at once so that linking is a simpler process. And of course, you can upload all sorts of documents (sound files, movies, etc.). >Go to SITE MANAGER tab. >Open folder MY WEB SITE FILES. >You will see all the files you have uploaded in this menu. >Upload Files: Click on the UPLOAD FILES link. >BROWSE for your files (locate them on your computer). >Click the red UPLOAD button. >If you accidentally upload the wrong file, click on the small red X at the end of the file s listing, in order to delete it. 6

7 Embed a Youtube Video or Other Video Online: If you want to embed a video that does not live on the PJA web site, you need to capture a copy of the embed code from the source web page. Let s use YouTube as our example: >Navigate to the video you would like to appear on your web page (from YouTube or other media source). >Click on the SHARE button under the YouTube video. >Click on the EMBED button. >Copy the computer code from the EMBED window. >Open page in FinalSite (go to PAGE MANAGER). >Open the full pop-up editor screen. >Place your cursor on the page where you would like the video to appear. Consider listing a title and a time frame in parentheses, and maybe even a hyperlink to the video. >Click on the MEDIA button. >Click on the SOURCE tab: 7

8 Embed a Youtube Video or Other Video Online, Continued: >Paste in the computer code (embed code) from the YouTube video page. >Click the green INSERT button at the bottom left corner of the source window. >Click SAVE in the pop-up editor window. >Click SAVE THIS PAGE red button on your FinalSite page. >Click the UNPUBLISH tab to view the page in your browser and check that the video plays. You did it! 8

9 Embed a Sound File (MP3): If you record the sweet sounds of your students, share it on your web page by embedding the media player right on the page, rather than a link! >Page Manager >Place cursor on the page where you would like the media player/sound player to appear. >Type in a title and give the length of the recording, so that visitors know how much time it will take to listen. >Click on the FULL POP-UP EDITOR: >Click on the Embed Media Button: >Select the TYPE of media from the dropdown menu. I suggest you use QUICKTIME, as this is user-friendly to BOTH mac and PC platforms. 9

10 Embed a Sound File (MP3) Continued: >Browse for your files: (You may need to upload your files if they are not already uploaded to the web site in your files. See page 6 of this packet to learn how to upload media to the Web site.) >Upoad media if necessary or double-click on MP3 file if it is already uploaded. >Click INSERT. >Your screen should look something like this, showing a box with a Quicktime emblem: >Save within the Pop-Up Editor window. >Save within Page Manager window (Red Save This Page button) >You did it! View in Unpublished Tab to see how it looks and plays. Ps. If you do not see the player in the unpublished view, but a Quicktime icon only, it s because you do not have the free Quicktime Player Plugin installed on your computer. Download it and install it. Type in download quicktime player plugin in your Google search bar to download the plug-in. 10
