Creating a Navigation Bar with a Rollover Effect These instructions will teach you how to create your own navigation bar with a roll over effect for your personal website using Adobe Dreamweaver CS4. Your rollover bar will consist of any amount of links you would like along with standard and rollover color options. You will be ready to add an appealing rollover bar to your website by following these instructions. To begin designing your own navigation bar, you will need an Apple based computer with Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 installed and some background knowledge in using a Mac computer. Creating the New.html File 1. Click the Applications folder on your Mac. 2. Locate the Adobe Dreamweaver software. 3. Click the icon to open. Note: The Dreamweaver Welcome Screen will appear. 4. Click the HTML button in the Create New column of the welcome screen. Note: A standard.html document will appear, ready for editing. If you see a blank white screen ensures the page is set to split view NOT design.
Making the List of Links 1. Click to place your cursor to the right of the <body> tag. 2. Click Insert. 3. Select HTML. 4. Select Text Objects. 5. Click Unordered List. Note: Make sure this is placed after the <body> tag as stated above. The <ul> and </ul> code will appear. 6. Click Insert. 7. Select HTML. 8. Select Text Objects.
9. Click List Item. Note: This will be how we create the links for our navigation bar. The <li> and </li> code will appear. 10. Click Insert. 11. Click Hyperlink. Note: The hyperlink box will appear.
12. Click the Text field. 13. Type what you would like your link to be named. Ex: About 14. Click the Link field. 15. Type where the file is located on the internet. Note: For the above example I would enter /about.html
16. Leave the other fields blank. 17. Click OK. Note: You should now see one list item like the picture shown on the right. 18. Repeat steps 5-16 to add as many links as you would like. 19. Click after the <body> tag and press enter twice. Note: It should leave some blank space between the <body> and the <ul> tag like the picture shown on the right.
20. Click the blank space directly above the <ul> tag we created earlier. Note: We must now name our list in order to create the rollover effect. 21. Type <div id= navbar > 22. Go to the end of your list and locate the </ul> tag. Note: This tag signifies the end of our list, so we must end the name also. 23. Click after the </ul> tag and type </div> Note: This prevents any other part of your page from being styled like the navigation bar. Adding Some CSS Effects to Our List 1. Scroll near the top of the document. 2. Locate the <head> tag.
Note: Do not confuse it with the </head> tag. 3. Click to the right of the <head> tag. Note: The <head> section is where all of the styling code will be placed. 4. Begin typing <style Note: Ignore the sidebar if it appears on the right hand side, it is trying to give you recommendations. 5. Double click the word style. 6. Press the spacebar. 7. Double click type.
8. Click text/css. Note: Don t forget to add the ending > after text/css. 9. Press enter and type the following as shown: #navbar ul { margin: 0; padding: 5px; list-style-type: none; text-align: center; background-color: #000; } Note: This will center the navigation bar and add a black background. 10. Press enter again and type the following as shown: #navbar ul li { display: inline; } Note: This will put our link items in a straight line. 11. Press enter again and type the following as shown: #navbar ul li a { text-decoration: none; padding:.2em 1em; color: #fff; background-color: #000; } Note: This will space the links further and
change their color to white. Play with these numbers to change the color and spacing to your desired settings. 12. Press enter one more time and type this last bit of code as shown: #navbar ul li a:hover { color: #000; background-color: #fff; } </style> Note: This will add the rollover effect we have been working for. The finished code should look like the picture on the right. 13 Click Live View to preview your completed work. Saving your Work 1. Click File > Save As. 2. Type a name for the navigation bar. Note: When saving your work, make sure to leave the.html at the end of the filename.
Congratulations it s done! To view the rollover bar you created simply double click the file you saved. It will open in your default browser. Now all that is left is to add more content or upload the bar to your web server!
