Seshaiah oseshu@rediffmail.com ABSTRACT Many studies conducted on webometrics, in particular on the impact of websites and the web impact factor. This paper analyse the engineering colleges websites in Andhra Pradesh according to some common webometrics indicators. It examines and explores engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh and identifies the number of web pages and link pages, and calculates their Simple Web Impact Factor (SWIF), Self-Link Web Impact Factor (SLWIF), External Web Impact Factor (EWIF) and Revised Web Impact Factor (RWIF). The websites were then ranked based on these Web Impact Factors. This study was conducted from July 0 to January 0 using Google search engine, Backlink watch and webmaster world.the results of the study showthat engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh had little impact on the web. It is indicated that the backlink pages were very low. INTRODUCTION SCOPE AND METHODOLOGY Computer and communication technologies changed rapidly every sphere of life for last few decades. In particular, World Wide Web is one of the main sources of information on academic and research activities. It is necessary to measure the effect of different web impact through various Webometric indicators to improve its efficiency through optimizing web context, analysis and redesigning. Webometrics is a uantitative study of web-related phenomena. Quantitative studies of the web have been named as webometrics by Almind & Ingwersen although the basic issue has been identified simultaneously by Larson who is also a pioneer with early exploratory link structure analysis with the first pure Informetrics analysis of the web. Bojorneborne defined webometrics as: "the study of the uantitative aspects of the construction and use of information resources, structures and technologies on the web, drawing on bibliometric and informetric approaches. Web Impact Factor (WIF) is a part of the methodology in webometrics studies. The idea of measuring WIF as one of the uantitative indicators(or the average link freuencies) was developed by Ingwersen. The Webometrics mainly consists of four main areas such as Webpage content analysis, Web link structure analysis, Web usage analysis and Web technology analysis. Webpage Content Analysis is the automatic categorization of webpages and texts by various search engines and tools for analysis. Web link structure Analysis is the study of hyperlinks of a particular website, patterns of linking like in links, self-links, external links etc. Web usage Analysis deals with the log files of users' searching and browsing behavior. Web technology Analysis relating to the search engine performance closely associated with the information retrieval and supports to webometric analysis. There are engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh. The study includes all the college of Andhra Pradesh that has web sites. To calculate various types of Web Impact Factor(WIF) of engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh LITERATURE REVIEW To rank the websites based on their Web Impact Factor (WIF). A Webometric study done by Jalal et al on central universities in India. They have given ranks to the Central Universities based on Webometric indicators. The study shows that the University of Delhi had higher grade while the Sikkim University occupies the last of the central universities in India. Jayashankar & Ramesh Babu were applying Webometric techniues to websites of State and Private Universitiesin Tamil Nadu. The study reveals that some universities in Tamil Nadu have higher number of web pages but correspondingly their link pages are very small in number and websites fall behind in their simple, self-link and external link web impact factor. Tools for Data Collection Work Sheet: A detailed work sheet was prepared for noting down the detailed information contained in the website. Google: Google search engine is used to collect data for the number of web pages for this study. Webmaster world: world.com is used to collect the self-links and external-links of each website under study. Backlink watch: In links for our study is collected from Web Impact Factor (WIF) Thanuskodi conducted a Webometric study on fifteen Private Engineering College s in Tamil Nadu to calculate the web impact factor.this study reveals that private engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu did not have much impact on the web and it is evident by the webometrics indicators is low. Prabakaran in his study explores the Webometric approach to library websites belongs to the observatories at national and international level. The analysis of the results reveals that overall the External Links are higher followed by In Links for the observatory libraries' websites. The Webometric analysis may have a positive impact on the library website and its content. Islam conducted a Webometric study on Universities in Bangladesh. This study reveals that some universities in Bangladesh have higher number of web pages but their link pages are fewer and websites fall behind in their web impact factor. The Investigator given some suggestions to improve the WIF of the university websites in Bangladesh0. Islam & Alam studied and analysed websites of private universities in Bangladesh. It is found that these universities did not have much impact factor on the web. Madhuri, Surendra Babu & Ramesh conducted a study on Webometric analysis of the State Universities in Andhra Pradesh using Google search engine, Webometric Analyst and Page Tools.The study shows that Sri Venkateswar Veterinary University,Tirupati gained st rank in link pages, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad got strank in Selflinking Pages, AcharyaNagarjuna University, Guntur occupied st in External link Pages. Madhusudhan & Prakash conducted a study to explored different characteristics of linking analysis of sixteen IIT websites using WISER, WIF (in link) and World. The study reveals that IIT Bombay and IIT Madras secured st and nd position respectively in WIF (in-link) as well as in world rank; whereas, WIF (in-link) position of IIT Rajasthan shows one position better rank than the world ranking i.e. th position. Webometric analysis can be performed to find out web relationship among the library websites of research institutions focused in the same subject areas. Webometric study can be executed for ranking of higher education institutions / universities in India. The results can encourage the Libraries to motivate and be competitive with other library web sites to earn goodness among the users.
