What is Islandora? Islandora is an open source digital repository that preserves, manages, and showcases your institution s unique material. 1 P age
What is Islandora? Islandora is an open source digital asset management system originally developed by the University of Prince Edward Island. It takes advantage of Drupal for the user interface, Fedora for the digital asset management system, and Solr for indexing. Islandora makes it possibly to manage, view, edit, and discover your digital materials. Many different formats Islandora supports a number of different formats, from audio to video and pdfs to photographs and newspapers. It can be used for scholarly works like masters theses and dissertations. As open source software, Islandora can be adopted to work with additional formats that may be needed. Solution Packs Solution Packs provide the ideal balance between extensibility and usability. Islandora uses Solution Packs, which are collections of Drupal modules, to provide the appropriate display tools and functionality for different formats. Solution Packs are based on best practices for each format. Ingest Forms and Automatic Processes Each Solution Pack comes with default ingest forms and unique automatic processes that occur when you add objects to your repository. You will only ever need to add one object (either pdf, tiff, video, audio, or otherwise) to your repository. By taking advantage of Drupal and using the Solution Packs Islandora will generate derivatives from the original object. These derivatives include the access and use copies, technical metadata for the object, checksums, thumbnails, and metadata records. Customization/Marketing You have total control over your repository with Islandora. Ingest forms can be customized, Solution Packs modified, and you can control the search index, facets, and search terms. It s also possible to restrict collections so the public can t view them. You ll also have the ability to restrict individual items and datastreams (derivatives). Islandora uses Drupal for its user interface, so you can do pretty much anything Drupal can do. This means you can do what you want to with branding your site and making it unique. We can give anyone who wants it the ability to work on the user interface. Adaptability One of the major strengths of Islandora is its flexibility and ability to meet your local needs. We highly encourage you to ask us if you have ideas for enhanced or new functionality, theming, or anything else. 2 P age
Connecting with the Islandora Community Connecting with the Islandora community is easy. This is mostly done through the website, and there are Islandora Camps and Conferences to meet in person. On the Islandora website, you will find a wealth of information including news, an Islandora Community Calendar, documentation, and links to the Islandora Google Groups. The Islandora Google Groups are the key to communicating with the Islandora community. This is a screen shot of the Islandora home page: You can access the Google Groups by click on Help at the top. 3 P age
You will find a link to the Google Groups, as well as tutorials. You can access the Islandora Community Google Groups by also scrolling down to the bottom of the page. Under Help you will find a link to the Users Google Group. The Google Group is used for general discussion, troubleshooting, and announcements. Do not be afraid of posting questions! The community is very responsive and welcoming. On the home page you will also find links to documentation, the Sandbox, and lots of other useful information. The Sandbox is where you can login with full administrative abilities and try Islandora. The site gets wiped every day, so your work will not be saved, but it is a good way to try out Islandora. There are also various interest groups that communicate through the Google Groups and over Skype, and are always looking for active members. Feel free to join one by asking in the Google Group, and attending a meeting over Skype. 4 P age
The Nuts and Bolts of Islandora Functionality This section covers some of the core functionality, the nuts and bolts of Islandora. Solution Packs Islandora takes advantage of Drupal s nature and uses Solution Packs to support the needs of different formats. Each Solution Pack has different tools used to display its supported content, default ingest forms, and automatic processes that result in the creation of various derivatives (also called datastreams). Solution Packs are essentially collections of Drupal modules that work together to provide robust, powerful features to manage digital objects of the same format. For example, in the Book Solution Pack, there are automatic processes that occur when you add pages to your book object. The Book Solution Pack is a little different from the others. First you add your book object. You ll use the ingest form at this point to describe the book object you won t be describing individual pages. After creating the book object you ll add pages to it. When you add pages to the book object, several automatic processes occur. OCR gets applied to each page, a PDF is generated along with a thumbnail, a JPEG2000, a JPEG, the Dublin Core record, the MODS metadata record, and technical metadata is also generated. Each Solution Pack will have different display tools and unique automatic processes that occur within it. 5 P age
Each format (audio, video, newspaper, large image, basic image, etc.) has a Solution Pack. Each Solution Pack includes: Default ingest (data entry) forms o These can be customized Different tools which are used to create different datastreams (derivatives) when objects get added to the repository o ImageMagick for image derivatives o Tesseract for OCR o PREMIS and FITS for preservation metadata Tools to display content for that format o JW Player is used to stream videos on the web in the Video Solution Pack o Adore Djatoka for JP2 Development of Solution Packs Solution Packs are developed by the Islandora Community, including Discovery Garden and UPEI, and others. Solution Packs get submitted under the proper license and then included in the next release. 6 P age
The Nuts and Bolts of Islandora Functionality Automatic Processes and Datastreams One thing that makes Islandora unique is the creation of multiple datastreams, or derivatives, when objects get added to the repository. Different tools in each Solution Pack are used to create the derivatives. This is how datastreams look in the Islandora administrative web interface. This is for a photograph. The original, or master file, is a TIFF image: The OBJ datastream is the tiff image you ingested into the repository. The RELS-EXT, MODS, DC, TECHMD, JP2, JPG, and TN (Thumbnail) datastreams/derivatives are created automatically when you add the object. 7 P age
The Nuts and Bolts of Islandora Functionality Ingest Forms Ingest forms, or metadata entry forms, are included with each Solution Pack. The original forms are built around best practices for each format. PALS will help customize these forms to fit your needs. Ingest forms are built through an XML Form Builder. The ingest form is what the Islandora administrative user sees when adding objects (photographs, newspapers, etc.) to the repository. Every aspect of the form can be customized. This includes: Which metadata standard is used What fields are required Instructions that the form user sees Links on the form to other sites Controlled vocabulary lists Default text Drop down menus This is part of a customized ingest form, following Minnesota Digital Library Guidelines. We will be working with you to customize your ingest forms to fit the needs of your collections. This involves deciding which metadata standard to use, which elements to use, which ones are required, what controlled vocabulary to use, default text to use, and determining how to handle copyright. We will track the mapping using Excel Spreadsheets. We have also found that it is easier to see how the metadata works by actually using the ingest forms. To this end we will likely build a draft of an ingest 8 P age
form after talking to you, test it, make changes, test it, make more changes, and continue until we are all satisfied with how the form works. The Nuts and Bolts of Islandora Technical Metadata Technical metadata in Islandora is generated automatically when you add objects. This is enabled by the Islandora FITS module in version 1.2 and the upcoming Islandora PREMIS module in 1.3. When you have the FITS module and PREMIS module configured properly, technical metadata will be generated automatically in all Solution Packs when you add an object. Technical metadata is its own datastream and gets stored with the original object in Fedora. Islandora FITS Module = File Information Tool Set Extracts technical metadata information for various formats Wraps several third party open source tools, normalizes output, reports errors Tools include OIS Audio Information, ADL Tool, Jhove, file utility, Exfittool, Droid, NLNZ Metadata Extractor, OIS File Information, OIS XML Metadata, ffident, Tika. Created by Harvard University Library Office for Information Systems for use in its Digital Repository Service Islandora PREMIS Module (Islandora 1.3) Produces XML and HTML representations of PREMIS metadata for objects. Documents fixity checks performed in datastreams Includes agent entries for institution and Fedora Commons software 9 P age
Checksum Module Gives repository managers the ability to enable creation of checksums for objects Following algorithms are available o MD5 o SHA-1 o SHA-256 o SHA-384 o SHA-512 Checksum Checker Module Verifies checksums derived from Islandora object datastreams and adds PREMIS fixity check Triggered periodically using Drupal cron functionality The Nuts and Bolts of Islandora Statistics We can set up Google Analytics for you in Islandora, using the Drupal Google Analytics Module and Drupal Google Analytics Reports Module. We just require a Google Analytics site key. We can enable statistics for you, and then you can manage all aspects of Google Analytics with your account. 10 P age
The Nuts and Bolts of Islandora Conclusions Islandora presents an ideal balance between extensibility and flexibility it really is possible to do most anything. It does not hurt to ask! You have complete control over the look and feel of your website. This is only limited by what Drupal can do. Examples of other Islandora sites can be found here: One Islandora site by Drexel University, Doctor or Doctress?, recently won the ABC-CLIO Online History Award. Explore the Islandora community! Do not hesitate to ask questions. They are responsive, helpful, and welcoming. We recommend starting with the Google Groups: We will encourage cooperation and communication among all our Islandora users. This will be done through Islandora Chat Hours hour long sessions where all sites can get together, online, and discuss issues, and give updates on projects. These will be held about once every two months. Talk to us, and ask questions. Our goal is to make this repository fit your needs and purposes as much as we can. 11 P age
