Exhibit Builder Tutorial Building an Exhibit for the Museum of the City FAQ Exhibit Considerations Set up an Account Prepare your Visuals [Photos] [Videos] Build your Exhibit Submit your Exhibit

About Museum of the City What is the Museum of the City? The Museum of the City is an international, virtual museum that interprets all facets of the city civilization s greatest artifact. Exhibit topics include the design and development of cities, along with the past, present, and future of their culture, arts, and infrastructure. While headquartered at Portland State University, Portland, Oregon US, the Museum engages the research and creativity of students and faculty in universities worldwide. A Museum of the City exhibit combines researched and well-written text with illustrations (photographs, paintings, drawings), maps, documents, or video to tell a story that is of interest to visitors of the website. Topics are diverse (see the variety of exhibit Galleries on the Museum s homepage), yet feature specific places, times, events, or people as they relate to a city or cities. The exhibits are built right on the website, by people who have registered for a (free) account. Who visits the Museum of the City? The Museum s audience is intentionally broad-based - made up of citizens whose urban knowledge is vital to sustaining 21st century cities. The Museum s electronic exhibits are intended to deepen our knowledge of cities and of the range of opportunities and solutions being explored and implemented to make cities more sustainable, creative, secure, and interesting places in which to live. Who may build Exhibits? You may. Rather than a curator, we invite students, scholars and citizens in the areas of history, geography, urban studies and planning, art and architecture, literature, engineering, political and environmental sciences, public health, among other disciplines to exhibit in the Museum. The Museum has developed tools -- accessible through its website -- for building exhibits online and is currently developing its round table, an online platform for reviewing research work, abstracts, essays, and other documentary presentations.

Exhibit Considerations for the Global Audience Museum of the City endeavors to give visitors from around the world a great city museum experience. When you are planning your exhibit, please consider your global audience by implementing the following: A sense of place and time Include a map or visual that gives the viewer a feel for the city s location. Yet write for the global reader by not including too many local references. Include in your introduction the date the exhibit was created, and include your name and location. A sense of objectivity Check to make sure your exhibit is relevant, does not contain opinion but maintains a voice of objectivity and enthusiasm. This is a museum of cities and their wonders and history ~ not their politics. Please also refrain from any hint of advertisement or endorsement. Olympic Sculpture Park, Seattle, Washington USA A sense of organisation Write an introduction that acquaints the visitor with what you are presenting. Organise your information (Introduction, Body, Conclusion) to support your exhibit story. Try not to include too many different elements or topics. A sense of language Many of our readers do not speak English as a first language, but enjoy reading it. Try to refrain from slang or colloquialisms that isolate the reader and make your subject difficult to understand. Make your sentences and paragraphs of reasonable length, and consider the amount of detail to add, so the reader can stay on topic. Your tone does not need to sound like a newspaper or academic report, but please consider your reader when writing. A sense of integrity Name your sources and make sure they are correct. Do not copy text that you cannot attribute to a source. Put quotations around attributed text. Make sure any links to reference sites are accurate.

Exhibit Considerations for the Global Audience, cont d: Exhibit Length Your exhibit should explore your topic thoroughly but not exhaustively. Plan on about 1,000-1,500 words. Exhibit Visuals The number of photos or illustrations in your exhibit is up to you. Make sure they relate to the text on the page, so many levels of readers can understand their significance. You may want to insert short captions to further illustrate the photo. Citations Page The last page of your exhibit should list sources of information and quotes, and photo sources. Please make your web sources as hyperlinks. Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico Formal Papers & Articles If you have an academic paper to publish, you may include it in the Museum in the Lecture Hall gallery. It should be written in the Academic style. If it is longer than ten pages, make a PDF of the entire document, upload it and provide a text link to it in the introduction paragraph on an exhibit page, along with your title and the chosen Gallery (Lecture Hall).

Preparing Your Photos for the Exhibit Your exhibit is going to be seen by virtual museum-goers the world over. Internet connections vary widely from country to country and that connection can be fragile. Or slow. For the enjoyment of all our Museum visitors, please adhere to the following: Make sure your photo or illustration illustrates your concept; don t use stock photos that don t directly pertain to the subject matter. Make sure your photo is excellent! Colour, sharpness, highlighting the subject of your exhibit Keep your photo size and file size small (JPG or PNG format) and save for highest quality. Please rename your photo before uploading - Miami Beach - no DSC87314.jpg please! Giving your photo a title makes it searchable, for yourself and for others. You can see title examples (good and bad) in the Media Library on the site. This is a feature the Administrator cannot change. When uploading photos to the Media Library, please only upload them once, and use them in your exhibit immediately. This saves space on the database and reduces duplicate photos. If the image is copyrighted, please put a (c) at the end of the picture name, i.e., EgyptCitadel(c).jpg. You may upload the pictures prior to inserting them in the exhibit pages, or upload them as you work. Step-by-step instructions for uploading & inserting photos are listed in the Exhibit Build description following this section. Be sure to credit the photographer if it is not you, If the image is copyrighted, please state that.

Sign up for your own Museum Account Find the Log In section on any page (shown at left) and choose Register to fill in your username, password and recaptcha verification. Keep your username and password where you ll remember it when you log in again. When your login is successful, the home page will reload. At the very top, you ll see your username (pictured below). Hover on this and click on your username or Edit My Profile and you ll be taken to your own section of the website s back-end. Here (shown at left), you can edit your profile or password, and begin to create a new Project and add Media to the Media Library.

Familiarize yourself with the website back-end Note the Media Library in the menu at the left, and the Projects - you will be making your exhibit in the Project area, not Pages or Posts. When you open a New Project, see and choose the interface called the Divi Builder.

The Divi Builder is a modular page builder that gives you many choices for your exhibit style. We have built 4 templates for you to choose from. The illustration below is an example of the Journalist Layout.

When you choose Use Divi Builder, you are presented with a Load from Library option - this is where the template layouts are stored. So you can visualize your exhibit, we ve included snapshots of their layouts here, to make choosing them ahead of your preparation, easier.

The Journalist You ll add your text and photos here, much like any blog post.

The Explorer

The Historian

Adding Photos/Illustrations to the Media Library You have your collected photos that illustrate the subject of your exhibit. They are wonderful, sharp & show the reader what the exhibit is about. They are sized for good webpage loading speed. They are named appropriately. After you log in to your Museum of the City account, go to your Profile page. The page will have a Media link to the Media Library. You have two choices for loading your JPG or PNG photos/graphics to the library: 1. Choose Add New and choose or drag files into the respository window for uploading. 2. Upload each photo as you require it while building the exhibit, which will also add it to the Media Library. The Media Library shows most recent photos uploaded at the top of the selection. If you upload your photos in a group, they will be easier to find than if you add them one at a time. However, if you upload a group of photos and someone else uploads theirs, yours may be pushed to the bottom of the lineup and be difficult to find. We recommend either a) using your group of photos in your exhibit straightaway, or adding as you assemble your topic. Whatever your choice, after the photo uploads, choose the Edit button to be taken to a page where you can enter a Caption (optional) and Alt Text (required) (a short description that describes a photo for blind readers). You ll also need to enter the Tags (bicycle, traffic circle, fence, skateboard) to further identify the photos, for easier cataloging and search. If this is a location-specific photo, please include the City and Country in the Alt Text string and tags: Bibliotheque Library, Alexandria Egypt. After you insert the photo from the library or if you insert the photo as you add it to the exhibit, you have choices over the size, whether to insert a caption, and the padding or space between the photo and the text beside it. See Build an Exhibit :: The Page. Metro Train & Convention Center Portland, Oregon USA

Preparing & Embedding Videos for the Exhibit The video modules in the Historian layout are meant to hold true video formats - not embedded video players. It requires an mp4 or mov video, plus a WEBM format video, AND a still image, because the video will not play from this module on a mobile device. Keep your video size small (.mov or.mp4 format) Keep your video length to 3 minutes or less Make sure your audio is clear, there is little background noise, and the English is easily understood If your video is not in English and you wish to caption or subtitle your video, please do that prior to upload. If instead you wish to show a video from Vimeo or YouTube, you may upload the link to that video and place it in a Text module. Remember to: upload a WEBM format of the video, if original, and a still shot for viewing on mobile devices. Alexandria, Egypt

Build Your Exhibit :: Start with the Outline Log in at the sidebar on the front page & choose Dashboard. You will be making a Project - not a Page, not a Post, but a Project. The first thing you ll do with the exhibit is: 1. Choose Add New Project 2. Enter a short title for the Exhibit in plain English in the Title area 3. Tick the Category boxes to choose the one Gallery the exhibit will appear in 4. Ascribe 2-3 tags describing the subject in the Tag box 5. Upload a Featured Image to represent the exhibit it the Galleries (a horizontal image looks best in the Gallery page). 3 You may Save Draft over and over again, to save your exhibit and return to work on it later. 4 When you choose Submit for Review, this indicates the exhibit is ready to be published, and you will no longer have access to it to make changes. Make sure your work is complete before you Submit for Review. 5

Build Your Exhibit :: The Page The exhibit will be one long page, much like a magazine or newspaper article. Think about how you d like to tell the story. You have the option of four different page layouts: Historian, Journalist, Legacy or Explorer. Decide whether to include captions on your exhibit photos. Think carefully about the organization of the information, so your reader can follow along in organized thought. Write as you would for an article, not a report. However, keep track of your sources to list at the end of the exhibit. Please also list your name and contact information, in case the Curator has questions for you. This will not appear in the exhibit. As you add photos as you work or choose photos from the Media Library, you have the opportunity to edit them after they are inserted. Click on the image and choose the pencil icon that appears in the left corner. This then presents you with options to change the size, caption, border, alt text, padding (space from text) and positioning. You can fix the photo here without having to delete it and start over. You may Save Draft and return to edit and add to the Exhibit. Once you choose Submit for Review, you cannot return to the exhibit to edit your work. After your submission, the Curator may you with reminders to add any of the items required to publish. Your follow-up will ensure your work is published in the Museum.

Review, Save and Submit Your Exhibit Please use this list as a checklist to ensure all elements of your exhibit are complete. It helps with publishing if all factors are addressed prior to submitting for publishing. Facts, spelling and copyright information are correct Exhibit is assigned to one Gallery and has two to three descriptive tags Featured Image is inserted All images have names, not numbers All images have a title and Alt tag All citations (sources) are listed with links Your name & contact information is on the exhibit (your contact information will be removed prior to publishing) When your exhibit is complete and ready to submit, click the button Submit for Review. Your exhibit is then submitted to Museum of the City, and the curator will review it and contact you by if there are any changes recommended. Currently there is no process in place to automatically you when the exhibit is published, so please check back by going to the site and choosing the respective Gallery to see if your work has been published. Then feel free to copy the link and share it with others. We at Museum of the City are excited to see your work. Please feel free to us with any questions or concerns to curator@museumofthecity.org and we ll be happy to respond. Thank you for your contribution!
