Lab 5 Valid HTML, Home Page & Editor Tables Navigation Topics Covered Server Side Includes (SSI) PHP Scripts menu.php.htaccess assessment.html labtasks.html Software Used: HTML Editor Background Reading: PHP Syntax Lab Manual Appendix E Output Reminders All images should be in the image folder of your personal website. All HTML pages and style sheets should be in the top level folder of your website (in the personalwebsite folder), not in a sub-folder. Each web page needs these sections: The HTML section opening and closing tags Inside the HTML section: The head section nested inside the HTML section contains metatags, title for browser bar, styles, calls to external files. does not contain HTML table code or div code etc. The body section nested inside the HTML section underneath the head section contains what will appear on the screen of a browser when the page is loaded. If a page is not working properly, check to make sure that table and div tags are all in the body section, NOT in the head section. Note: To validate, each web page needs a doctype and an attribute for the HTML tag. E-Business Systems 1 INTE2047 Lab Exercises Semester p 36
Check Your Template against this Guide Check that your template matches the following: This line continues. Make sure the <div> and </div> of each section are tabbed to the same column. Anything that should appear in the banner section should be here. Contents of Menu navigation will be included here. Anything that appears in main content section of page goes here. E.g. Headings, forms, graphics, information etc. Information for footer goes here such as disclaimer, author of page, perhaps link to home etc. CHECK: The <body> should contain 1 outer div for the whole page. Inside it you should have 4 divs for: banner leftmenu content (main body of the page) footer E-Business Systems 1 INTE2047 Lab Exercises Semester p 37
Adding Metatags Load your master template and enter the description and keywords metatags under the title tag,. The question marks will be replaced with words that suit each page when created. <meta name="description" content="?????????" /> <meta name ="keywords" content="?????,?????,?????, etc. " /> Validation Before creating other pages you need to check if the template validates correctly. That is, does your code comply with W3C standards? Your editor will usually provide highlighting of errors in the code. Again check the menu options in your editor. Once you think your code is okay, check it against this online validator: 1. Load the following URL: 2. Choose the Validate by File Upload option and then Browse to find and upload your template page from your folder. Click Check. 3. Did you get a Passed result with a green bar? CONGRATULATIONS. If not, check the errors and correct your code until you get the all-green. Home Page 1. Once you are happy with the look and feel of your mastertemplate.html, and it validates, make a copy of it and rename it index.html. This will be your home page. Alter the wording in the Banner section to reflect that this is the home page. 2. Alter the metatags to match the content of this page: Title Tag (Appropriate title to appear in the title bar of index.html) E-Business Systems 1 INTE2047 Lab Exercises Semester p 38
Description Tag (See below) Keywords Tag (See below) <meta name="description" content="?????????????" /> <meta name ="keywords" content="?????,?????,?????, etc. " /> Replace the??? with a general description of your home page. This would show up in search results. You can find some very good examples here: Replace the??? with keywords that search engines could use, separated by commas. Images Insert your photograph in the content section of your home page. (You can use the same one from your aboutme.html page or a different photo.) Use a float style (added to your style sheet) to align your photo to the right: img.floatright { float: right; margin: 4px; } Content Replace the words Content in the content div, with content that you think is relevant for your home page. A home page should be striking and attract immediate interest. It should be an indication of what the site is about and motivate the visitor to look inside the site. This should be REALLY interesting with unique content, content that is not on any other page. It could have graphics, it might have a calendar etc. etc. Look at other home pages for some ideas. Re-publishing 1. Check that your home page (index.html) validates. 2. Add a 3 rd link for the home page in menu.php. 3. Publish any files that have been modified since your last publishing session. Publish any new files such as index.html and your menu files. 4. When you type in your URL you should automatically see your home page loaded. For example, this would be: If your home page doesn t load, check that: E-Business Systems 1 INTE2047 Lab Exercises Semester p 39
you have named it index.html rather than index.htm. all files are in the.htmlinfo folder. Check that your menu works as expected. Tables using an HTML Editor Now that you understand tables and how the code works to create cells, you can use an HTML editor (suggested by your tutor) to create tables more quickly for you by following these guidelines: Assessment Table 1. Make a copy of mastertemplate.html and rename it assessment.html. Alter all of the metatags to suit (title, description, keywords). Alter the banner text to suit this page as well. 2. In the content section, insert a table to store results data. Click on the Design view in the Editor screen. Place the cursor in the content area (deleting the Content Here phrase) and using the menu options, insert a 6 x 4 table with a border and a width of 200 pixels: Table Insert Table, Make sure your cells have borders when you preview the page in a browser. If not, you can select the table in Design View and format borders from the menu. Check the code (via the Source window). Some editors simply store all the formatting of the table in a style in the head section. In Design View, populate the table with Assessment tasks in E-Business Systems, due dates and a heading for results. You can find a listing of these tasks on our website or in your course guide or in your Assessment Specifications handout. As soon as you have results for any assessment tasks, update this table. If the width needs changing, just edit the style in Source view. You can improve on the table in any way you like by editing the code itself. For example, you might : Insert column headings Insert a caption Specify a percentage width of the columns. 3. Download the assessment specifications from our course website and store the pdf document in personalwebsite\documents. Rename this document to specifications.pdf. Provide a hyperlink to specifications.pdf at the bottom of your assessment table. E-Business Systems 1 INTE2047 Lab Exercises Semester p 40
Quiz Table 1. Insert another table underneath the assessment table to store your quiz results (the quizzes listed at the beginning of many labs). Enter your scores so far. 2. Edit menu.php so that it will link to your assessment page and then republish the relevant files. Link to Lab Tasks 1. A digital version of your weekly exercises has been uploaded to the course website, under class notes. If you haven t already done so, download all of the lab worksheets for weeks 1 to 6 and store in your documents folder. Make sure all filenames are without spaces and use lowercase. e.g. worksheet1.pdf. 2. Open your website in your editor and make a copy of your master template, calling it labtasks.html. Remember, there shouldn t be any spaces in your HTML filenames and all letters should be in lowercase. 3. Using Design View, insert a table into the content area. It should have the following elements (let the HTML editor create it for you): 12 rows, 3 columns, 80% width, coloured border, centered. 4. Give the first row the headings shown in the screen dump below. In the 1st Lab Exercise cell enter text that can be clicked for week 1. You can use the editor (Design View) to very quickly set up hyperlinks. Select the text and then use a menu option to convert it to a hyperlink. Click on Browse to select the name of the file for that worksheet. 5. Set up the rest of your table as shown below and link to this page from your menu. Enter weeks 1 to 12 and link to all available worksheets Enter topic(s) covered in each worksheet. E-Business Systems 1 INTE2047 Lab Exercises Semester p 41
Look at the source code when finished. You will notice that all the styles have been created for you by the editor. (These can be renamed and moved to your style sheet.) 6. Re-publish your menu and this page. Assessment Reminders Remember you need to test your site on at least 2 different browsers. Make sure that your CSS layout works on both. There are some really good links on our website with examples of CSS styling and positioning. Homework You can see the disadvantage of creating pages before you have created a template because you now have 2 pages, aboutme.html and timetablecss.html that do not include the navigation. Therefore to get back to the home page; a visitor has to click on the back key. Fix this by copying the content from each of these pages into your template-based pages. Enter your weekly reflections in your e-journal. Optional Challenge #3 You can receive an extra mark on top of your lab assessment mark for optional challenges attempted. Challenge 3 PHP Feedback Using PHP, create a feedback form on a page in your personal website. The form should send entered feedback to your address..
