STUDENT INFORMATION PACKET GETTING STARTED IN FRONTPAGE 2000 Click on the icon on the Desktop or go to Start > Programs > FrontPage. This will open a blank white page. Now the fun begins SETTING THE BACKGROUND Click on Format Background You can use an image as a background. You can specify a background color or texture and set the default text color. Here s where you define the colors of your hyperlinks. ADDING ANIMATION AND PAGE TRANSITIONS To add animation, highlight the image or text and select Format > Dynamic HTML Effects. If you are using tables, you will be able to separate the images and highlight them independently for adding different types of animation throughout your page. If you don't use tables, you may find that the animation gets applied to several elements on your page. You can also specify effects to take place each time the page is loaded. Select Format > Page Transition.
INSERTING IMAGES You have a choice of inserting pictures and images you have previously saved or choosing an image from the Microsoft Clip Gallery. In general, the clip gallery on the C: drive is very limited. BUT you have a choice of hundreds of additional clips when you access the Clips Online. To insert a picture, select Insert > Picture. Then select either Clip Art or From File. CLIPS ONLINE Keyword Pre-Defined Categories Image Type To access the online catalog, which allows you to specify a picture by keyword, click on the Clips Online icon. If a page opens describing the End User Requirements, select I Accept. This will open the search page below that enables you to narrow your search and download as many images as you want, ALL DOWNLOADED CLIPS WILL BE SAVED TO THE DOWNLOADED CLIPS CATEGORY WITHIN THE CLIP GALLERY ON YOUR COMPUTER.
IMAGES FROM THE INTERNET Find an image you like, right-click on the image and select Save Picture As. Save the image in your H:/ drive (Home directory), then from within FrontPage you can select Insert > Image > From File. This same process can be done for video clips and sound files you find on the Internet. If you use the Copy and Paste commands, you will not see the image on your page unless you are viewing it in a browser. This is because the picture still resides at an address. Don t forget to cite the location where you get your images, sound and video files if they are not included in Microsoft s Clip Gallery. ADDING HYPERLINKS After you've highlighted the text or image you want as a hyperlink, select Insert > Hyperlink. The diagram below shows your options. Link to an e- mail address Browse to find a page on the Internet. Link to a page you've already created. Create a new page (with formatting options). Type an Internet address here!
ADDING A WORD DOCUMENT TO YOUR WEB SITE Since HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is the code used to display documents on the Internet, the text from any document created in Word will have to be converted so that it can be added to your web site. FrontPage does this automatically when you copy text from your Word document and paste it into a web page. SAVING YOUR PROJECT Give your page a title (it appears in the blue bar at the top of the browser window). Click on Change You will be saving your project to a formatted floppy disk (or ZIP disk) to turn in to your teacher. All embedded images and web pages must be saved together and all links must be checked to ensure that your web page loads and displays properly. Your splash page (the first page of your project) should be saved as index.html THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND 1. Make sure the background color and the text are compatible. Some combinations of colors are not very readable. 2. Don't use too much animation on your web pages or you will distract the viewer. 3. Adding a Back button to all the web pages helps in navigating through your web site but you CANNOT add a Back button to any Internet page to which you have linked. The browser s Back button must be used to return to your web site. 4. The default line spacing in FrontPage is double-spaced. You can add single-spacing by holding down the Shift key while pressing Enter. 5. Give your floppy disk to another student to test your web page project. Make sure all your images are appearing and that they are able to navigate through all your hyperlinks BEFORE you turn in your project. 6. HAVE FUN AND BE CREATIVE!
ADVANCED TOPICS WORKING WITH TABLES Tables help you line up your text and images. You have the option of a visible border or invisible border. Select Table > Table Properties. Set Border = 0 To insert a scrolling marquee, select Insert > Active Elements > Marquee You can add animation to your page by clicking on Format > Animation. You also have the option to add Page Transition. But don't get carried away or it will be too distracting! To place text or images at the top of a cell, select Table > Cell Properties > Vertical Alignment > Top Notice that when the page is viewed, the frame around the table disappears but the text and images maintain the alignment. TO ADD A HYPERLINK: 1. Highlight the text or image you want as your hyperlink. 2. Select Insert > Hyperlink. 3. Now you can Browse to link to a web page on the Internet, link to another page you have already created, link to an address, or create a new page.
FRONTPAGE THEMES FrontPage comes with preformatted themes that contain backgrounds, buttons, banners, font styles and colors. If you begin your project by clicking on New > Web, you can take advantage of the automatically linked pages with banners and navigation bars BUT you will need to take special care to copy all the files in your web to your floppy disk before you turn in your project. You can still use the backgrounds, colors, buttons and heading styles without creating a web Experiment to see which FrontPage Themes features you can access with this drop-down menu. I ve discovered you can define bulleted and numbered lists, numerous heading styles, etc.
