1 Kurzweil Window Overview Main Toolbar Contain the command buttons you use most often. Reading toolbar: gives you access to Reading functions and settings: Speaker and Speed You can either show or hide these toolbars. [Click the toggle along the left edge of the toolbar area.] Study skills toolbar: Here you ll find annotation tools: color highlighters and voice notes different kinds of other notes; hyperlink tool; bookmarks; column notes Writing toolbar: You ll find settings for fonts, alignment, along with the Writing Path tools that start you off in the Writing process from planning using Brainstorm graphic organizer or Outliner to creating and reviewing drafts. You ll also find Spell Check and Word Prediction. Below the toolbars is the document box. We ll use the Go to Page box to go to different pages. Press F3 key or use the Speak button to speak the text. Kurzweil 3000 highlights the words as it reads. Go back to Menu bar: Under ToolsNoteAdd Bubble note feature; teachers can use this feature to quickly create quizzes or embed questions for students to answer. o Highlight Fred Saw the heavy work that his father did. Add a bubble note. File menu: there are many varieties of the Extract feature for pulling out annotations. File menu: There is Create Audio file for converting documents into portable file formats. View menu: there is Magnify Spoken Word to enlarge words as you read. 1

2 Change Reading Options on the Reading Toolbar Click the Speak button to read a text. Notice that Kurzweil 3000 highlights the current word in one color & the Reading unit in another color. To change the Reading Unit, click the Reading Unit list. Look up Words (Read) Highlight the word. Click Definition button. Click Read to hear the definition. Look up a word by typing it. Go to the Reference menu & choose Look up Word I Type. Have Kurzweil speak each syllableselect a word; then click the Syllables button. See a picture for a wordselect a word; Click Picture. Pronounce button: hear the human voice for a word. Use Highlight in Study Skills Menu (Study Skills) Find them under Tools or Study Skills Toolbar. Use highlighters to take notes and how to Read by Highlights to read the notes, and Extract Highlights to pull the highlighted text into a study document. o Mark a main idea in yellow. Click the yellow highlighter and select the text. o Add some sub-ideas in Green. o A few details in Blue o Click the highlighter again to exit the Highlight mode. o One way to study is to read the highlighted notes. o Go to the beginning of the texton Read menuread UnitHighlight (Or use the read drop down list) Another way to study is to extract the highlighted text into a study document. o FileExtractExtract Notes and Highlights o In the dialogue box, make sure the Highlights box is selected and make sure the colors you want to extract are also selected. Work with Column Notes FileExtract Highlights to Column Notes Choose to open a New Column Notes file. The Column Notes window opens containing the highlighted text at the bottom. Main Ideas, Supporting Ideas; The 3 rd column can be used for source information and additional information. As you put some notes in 3 rd column, you can use Word Prediction and other formatting features as well. If you Right Click your mouse button, you can hide the 3 rd column. If you re studying the column, you can cover the 2 nd column and give yourself a quiz. 2

3 Save Column Notes as a file. Save it anywhere on your system. They are saved as.k3c format. Open an existing column note by clicking on the Column Note button in the toolbar. Whenever you re ready to begin writing from your notes, you can Extract Column Notes to Outline under File menu. Then, go from Outline to Draft. Then, expand the notes to prose in the text document. You can also drag and drop text into column notes, or copy and paste. At any time, you can also click the Read button to hear your notes. You can also take class notes or lecture notes using column notes. Create Sticky Notes and Text Notes (Study Skills) Click the Sticky Note button and click the document where you want to place it. Click the Text Note button and click in the document to place it. Writing Path (Writing Toolbar or Write Menu) Six sets of buttons. Go to Start Writing button. Begin with Brainstorm from Blank or from Template, Outline from Blank or from Template, and Draft from Blank or Template. Open Brainstorm from Template: Choose Cause and Effect Essay Open the graphic organizer There s a tools palette and a Right Mouse Button menu. Open New Outline from Template. Click Open Summary this time. jot down ideas in text format in outline styles Changes made in one view will be reflected in another view. You can click the Split Screen view to see the outline while you work in your draft. Or, you can choose to see only the draft view. The Review Checklist in the left pane gives you some tasks to do to finalize your draft. When you finish each task, simply check it off in the list. This list is customizable in the Tools Options dialog so you can add your own tasks. Brainstorm/Outline/Draft Write menu or Writing toolbar Quick Takes (Thunderbolt)Type and press Enter Outline view: Ctrl + G for new topic at the same level and Ctrl + K for a subtopic Click on the minus sign to show or hide sub-ideas Ways to change, add or delete ideas: drag & drop, copy and paste Change the list style in Outline: bullets, legal, numeric, roman, etc. Use Writing Supports: Spell Check & Word Prediction Right click to correct misspelled words 3

4 Choose Word Prediction first and then type words. Prepare a Test Document Prepare a fill-in-the-blank test o Create a Word document test, open in Kurzweil 3000 & save in Kes. format o Notice the blanks. When working with blanks in Kurzweil, you need Text Notes. o To quickly place a Text Note at each blank, go to ToolsFill in the Blanks. o Test takers simply click and type their answers into the Text Notes. o Consider showing the Test Taking toolbar so that test takers have all the tools they need. Open the Toolbar Right Mouse Button menuapply Toolbar SetTest Taking o To save this Test Taking Toolbar for this test, go to FilePropertiesGeneralSave Toolbars in Document Set a toolbar display and enable Speak as Typing o ToolsOptionsGeneralSpeak as TypingChoose any of the three options Save the document and it s ready for test takers. Highlight and Circle Test (Mark Answers in Multiple Choice Tests) It s a good idea to have Kurzweil read through the questions and choices before you start. To highlight an answer: Click the Highlighter button & drag over the correct answer. To circle an answer: Click the Circle button & drag over the correct answer. To erase an answer: Click the Erase button. Remember to save the document. If the answer is in the test, just drag and drop it into the blank. Create, Publish and Assign a Scorable Assignment There are two parts to a typical assignment: the instructions and response document When creating a test document, you can use Text Notes, Fill-in-the-Blanks, and Bubble Notes. For Kurzweil 3000 to score the test, it must have Bubble Note True/False or Multiple Choice. You must also answer all the questions for the system to score against correct answers. The document must be Published for it to be part of an assignment. Use Horse s Tale Quiz as a sample test document o We want to embed scorable quiz questions. Click where you want the Bubble Note [In front of SOLDIER BOY- PRIVATELY TO HIMSELF], go to ToolsNoteAdd Bubble Note Choose Multiple Choice/Match/Two Questions under Question Options Type instructions: Match the words to their meanings. Words on the left-hand side: springy, batteries Meanings on the right-hand side: group of artillery, to be lively 4

5 Click Preview Drag the line from the word to its meaning. o Another question put the cursor in between Buffalo Bill s and Horse ToolsNoteBubble Note Do a True or False. The narrator is a horse. Preview to answer the question. FilePublishAdd a description Horse s Tale by Mark Twain Close out the document. Click on the Assignment button in the main menu bar. Click New in the assignment dialog. Fill out necessary information and Add the document. Assign students: Click Add Student(s) Decide which class and students Read the Web OptionsGeneralReadingRead the WebInternet Explorer or Firefox In order to use the Mozilla Firefox browser, a small extension, named KESIReader, must be added to it. Do you want to add the extension? Click Yes or No. The Firefox has to be lower version than Useful Shortcut Keys Read/Pause-- F3 or CTRL+SHIFT+Z Zoom In 10%.-- F7 Zoom Out 10%. F8 Move the cursor forward by the currently selected Reading Unit F4 Read Faster F11 Read Slower F12 Definition-- CTRL+D Synonyms-- CTRL+Q Syllables-- CTRL+Y Spell Word-- CTRL+L Fit image to text width F5; Fit image to text height F6 Magnify each word that Kurzweil 3000 speaks View menumagnify Spoken Word You can drag and resize the magnification box. Reading: Self-paced vs. continuous During self-paced reading, Kurzweil 3000 pauses after each reading unit. 5

6 To highlight each unit in a document without reading aloud Click the Audible button on the toolbar. The Audible button changes to a Silent button. Picture Dictionaries Kurzweil 3000 comes with the Kurzweil 3000 Picture Dictionary in English and in Spanish of over 1300 illustrations and photos, as well as a sample set from the Mayer- Johnson PCS library. You can install and add other picture dictionaries, clip art or image libraries that are in Kurzweil 3000-supported image formats, including bmp, gif, ico, jpg or jpeg, tiff, and wmf. o install and view the Mayer-Johnson PCS Samples o Reference Dictionaries Picture Dictionaries Setup Install/Activate Mayer-Johnson PCS Samples o click any highlighted word o Click the Picture button in the Main toolbar Extract Notes and Highlights Teachers can use the Extract Notes and Highlights feature to: Mark unfamiliar words in a document and extract them for use as a pre-reading or a vocabulary learning exercise for students. Highlight main ideas and supporting details in separate colors, then extract the highlights into one of the outline formats as pre-writing material or as a study guide. Adding Custom Descriptions to the Highlighters and Circle Tools ToolsOptions Highlights EditFind Extract highlighted text to an outline style Bubble Notes Bubble Notes are either Balloon- or Cloud-shaped notes that typically open while you are reading in Continuous mode. Bubble Notes are typically created by a teacher to give students additional instructions or quick questions to assess comprehension. True or false questions/multiple choice questions/checkboxes/match/text box Column Notes Create and Save Column Notes Join column notes o Open a Column Notes file that you want to append to another column notes file. 6

7 o Click inside the Column Notes window to make sure it is the active window. o Do one of the following: o From the Tools menu, select Column Notes, then choose Join Column Notes. o From the File menu, choose Join o In the Join Column Notes dialog, Browse for and select the name of the Column Notes file to which you want to append the open Column Notes. The file name appears in the Result File box. o Click Join. Show/Hide 3 rd column/cover the 2 nd Column with Right Mouse menu Extract Highlights into Column Notes Using a single column note across multiple documents through: o Using an existing column note file to take notes o Join column notes files o Replace an existing column notes file with newly collected column notes (through Saving as ) Notes Snippets A floating window that displays the contents of a Column Notes file in read-only mode, and in hierarchical format Click the Note Snippets button in the Study Skills toolbar or select Note Snippets from the Tools menu. In the Open Note Snippet dialog, select the name of the Column Notes file you want to display in Note Snippets. Click Open. Copying and Pasting Text from Note Snippet Window Dragging and Dropping an idea and its Details from Note Snippet Window Hyperlinks Web URL or a File or a Link within the Same Document o In the document, go to the location where you want to link to, and click. o Add a bookmark. Choose Bookmarks from either the Tools menu or from the Right Mouse Button menu. You can also press CTRL+F12. Specify a Bookmark description. o In the same document, go to and click where you want to place the hyperlink or select the text for which you want to add the hyperlink o Open the Add/Edit Hyperlink dialog. o The Description box should contain the text in the document closest to the location of the cursor where the hyperlink is to be placed. o Select the Link within this document option. o A Locate button appears next to the Link To box. o Click Locate, select the Bookmark description you want to link to. o Click Add. 7

8 Writing Path and Writing Views Writing Review Feature To Edit or Add to: o ToolsOptionsReview Items From Reading to Writing Extract Column Notes to Outline is a powerful feature that takes you from reading, gathering information and research directly to the Writing Path. It extracts the Column Notes you have taken in class, in one book or across many books, or from a combination of sources, and brings them into the Outline feature, ready for you to expand into prose. o Open the Column Notes file you want. Be sure there is content in it. o From the File menu or the Column Notes Right Mouse Button menu, choose Extract Column Notes to Outline. o The contents of the Column Notes file appear as follows in the Outline: o Main Ideas/Column 1 appear as top-level topics. o Supporting Details/Column 2 and Column 3 appear as sublevels to their related topics. o Because the notes are now in the Writing Path, you can go to Brainstorm, Draft, Split Screen View and Review. Word Lists Show several word lists (Confusables and Homophones; Dolch) Word Lists options box Highlight (ToolsHighlight) confusables and homophones Word Prediction You can select a word in a number of ways: by clicking it, by pressing the Control key plus the word number, or by pressing the number on the numeric keypad. Resize the WP box to show more of fewer word choices. Click the red pushpin to display the pin point, you can have the dialog box move with the cursor, providing instant Word Prediction feedback as you work. Writing Templates Write Menu To access templates, select New Draft, or New Brainstorm From Template from: Save a template as a draft (Open a template and Save as) Creating or Customizing Brainstorm Templates File Open Brainstorm Templates Open the template you want Start a new template from this template Save As 8

9 Test Taking For students: o Adjust reading speed. o Answer questions using either text or spoken notes. o Mark answers using either Color Highlighters or Circle Tools. o Proofread by hearing the test read back. o Drag and drop answers. o Respond to Bubble Note questions. Kurzweil 3000 makes it easy to: o Have all students take the same test, without the assistance of human reading aides. o Control access to reference aids such as dictionary and spell checker. o Provide reminders and/or memory joggers through electronic notes. o Choose from a number of ways to evaluate tests and provide feedback. For example, you can print out the completed test, correct it, and hand it back or use notes within the Kurzweil 3000 version of a test. Preparation: o Scan the material into Kurzweil 3000 o Use Notes, Color Highlights, or Circle tools as your read o Pull your Notes and highlights together using the Extract feature to create study aids such as Summaries, Outlines, Flash Cards, Spelling and Vocabulary Lists, and/or Fact Sheets.
