6 UNSW Mdle 2 staff step by step instructins 2 What is Mdle 2? Mdle (Mdular Object Oriented Learning Envirnment) is pen surce learning management sftware. Tw versins f Mdle are currently being used at UNSW, Mdle 1.9 and Mdle 2. These instructins relate t Mdle 2 nly.

When yu uplad a file, Mdle gives it the same permissins as the resurce r activity t which it is upladed. (Fr example, a file may belng t a file resurce, a frum pst r a wiki page). Yu access repsitries using the new File picker interface. The new system manages resurces files and keeps track f their usage in activities, e.g. when an image is used n a cntent page. Metadata abut each file (authr, date, license infrmatin) is stred in the database. Yu can nw cpy dcuments and media int Mdle frm external cntent repsitries (Ggle Dcs, Flickr, YuTube, Wikimedia, Mahara) using an interface similar t a standard Open dialg bx. Yu can als imprt files frm yur desktp r by specifying a URL. Wrkshp activity Mdle 1.9: The Wrkshp tl is fairly cumbersme and cmplex; it takes a great deal f time and cncentratin t becme familiar with it. It has nly been maintained sufficiently t keep it peratinal. Mdle 2: The new Wrkshp tl (cmpletely rewritten) has a mre user friendly interface and the prcess is mre streamlined and better signpsted. Wrkshp activities prceed as fllws: 2. Teacher creates assessment tasks and sets up the grading strategy. 3. Students submit respnses. 4. Peers and/r teacher assess the submissins. 5. Mdle calculates the grades fr bth students submissins and their assessment f thers submissins.

Teacher has t chse which HTML mde t allw, whether t allw file uplad, aut linking ptins and student admin ptins. Mdle 2: The Wiki activity has been cmpletely rewritten. HTML, Crele and Nwiki (a Mediawikilike markup language) editing frmats are nw available. File uplad is autmatically available. The Adding a new Wiki page has been simplified and, as with all activities, yu can Restrict access t wikis, and set Activity cmpletin cnditins. Curse cmpletin and activity cmpletin Mdle 1.9: The Gradebk is the nly place where it is clear which activities/curses have been cmpleted by students. It is nt pssible t tell whether a student has viewed a resurce r an activity. Mdle 2: Cmprehensive cmpletin indicatrs have nw been integrated int Mdle at bth activity and curse level. Using the Restrict access and Activity cmpletin sectins n the Adding a new [Activity] page, yu can nw define when the system cnsiders that a student has cmpleted the activity. Yu may, fr example, require that a certain number f psts are put up, that a grade is assigned r a particular grade is achieved, that a chice is made r that a student manually marks a resurce as having been viewed. Yu can nw specify a curse cmpletin cnditin fr all students. This can be based n activity cmpletin, r n achieving a certain grade, meeting deadlines r ther criteria. This standard can be used as a prerequisite t ther curses, allwing rdered prgressin and scafflding. Yu and yur students can access reprts n students prgress thrugh a curse r series f curses. Cnditinal activities (selective release) Mdle 1.9: N alternative learning paths can be cnstructed thrugh a Mdle 1.9 curse. Yu can either shw r hide an activity, but yu cannt make its visibility cnditinal n viewing anther resurce r cmpleting anther activity. Mdle 2: With the new Cnditinal Activities feature, yu can restrict access t activities based n dates, grade btained, the cmpletin f anther activity r ther criteria. Using these criteria, yu can set up curse cntent s that it is prgressively disclsed.

9 UNSW Mdle 2 staff step by step instructins 5 Rles and permissins Mdle 1.9: An instructr can assign Teaching Assistant, Student and Guest rles within a curse. Mdle 2: All rles are assigned by the system administratr. Individuals rles can be viewed within a curse (in the Settings blck: Under Curse administratin, click Users > Permissins > Check permissins), but nly the system administratr can change them. Instructrs can determine access t resurces and activities using the Restrict access sectin f the Adding page. Private files (new feature) In Mdle 2, each user has access t a private files area where they can uplad and manage a set f files. Access the private files area using the Navigatin blck (My hme > My prfile > My private files), r add the My private files blck. In the File picker, Private files displays as a repsitry frm which yu can select files t use in a curse. Navigatin Mdle 1.9: Mving arund a Mdle 1.9 curse can be quite labrius, requiring a lt f clicking thrugh pages. Mdle 2: The new standard Navigatin and Settings blcks n every page shws different links depending n whether yu are at curse level r resurce/activity level, allwing yu t jump elsewhere quickly. Cmments Mdle 1.9: Instructrs rely n such tls as frums and glssaries t allw student input and cmmenting. Mdle 2: User cmments (n glssaries, databases, blgs etc) are nw managed centrally and handled and displayed cnsistently thrughut Mdle. Cmments can be added and deleted withut lading a new page. The new Cmments blck can be added t any curse page.

Enter yur Username (yur staff number) and Passwrd (yur zpass) and click Lgin. The My hme page displays. Nte: Once yu are lgged in, if yu are inactive in Mdle fr a substantial perid, yur sessin will time ut. When yu next access the Mdle page, the Lgin t the site page will display with the message: Yur sessin has timed ut. Please lg in again. T access a Mdle curse: 1. Lg in t Mdle On the Mdle My hme page, click the name f the curse. The curse hme page displays. T lg ut f Mdle, click Lgut at the right f the page banner, next t the message, Yu are lgged in as...

12 UNSW Mdle 2 staff step by step instructins 8 What s n the My hme page? The My hme page is the default landing page when yu enter Mdle. Links t all yur teaching curses display here. Blcks: The bxes dwn the right hand panel f the page are called blcks. They cntain specific infrmatin r functins fr yu and yur students in Mdle. T add a blck t a page: 1. Click Turn editing n at the tp right f the page. 2. In the Add a blck blck, select the blck yu want in the drp dwn list. The new blck will display directly abve the Add a blck blck. T rearrange blcks n a Mdle page: 1. Click Turn editing n at the tp right f the page. 2. In the title bar f the relevant blck, click the Mve arrws. Dtted lines display arund the blck and dtted rectangles display at every ther ptential lcatin n the screen. 3. Click inside the rectangle at the chsen lcatin. The blck will mve t that lcatin. Custmise hme page: Click this buttn t shw the tls yu can use t hide, edit, delete r mve a blck. Curse verview: This blck cntains a list f the curses yu teach. Ntificatins f recent changes t the curse display belw the curse link. Click a curse name t access its hme page.

13 UNSW Mdle 2 staff step by step instructins 9 What s n a curse hme page? Breadcrumbs: These display at the tp f the page, belw the page banner. They shw yu the rute yu tk t reach this page (e.g. My hme > My curses > [curse name]). Use these breadcrumbs t return t earlier pages. Page frmats: By default, a new curse hme page is presented in Weekly utline frmat. This frmat cnsists f an intrductry sectin and an additinal sectin fr every week in the semester. Three ther frmats are available: SCORM frmat: The curse is presented as a package f web pages, graphics, Flash animatins, quizzes r ther elements. (SCORM Sharable Cntent Object Reference Mdel) Scial frmat: The curse is presented as an pen frum. Tpic utline frmat: This frmat is identical t the Weekly utline, but with the dates remved. It allws yu rganise cntent by theme r tpic. T change page frmat: 1. In the Settings blck, click Edit settings. 2. On the Edit curse settings page, select the new Frmat frm the drp dwn list. 3. Click Save changes. The curse hme page displays in the new frmat.

14 UNSW Mdle 2 staff step by step instructins 10 T add a link frm the curse hme page t an external applicatin: 1. Add an HTML blck: Click Turn editing n at the tp right f the page. In the Add a blck blck, select HTML frm the drp dwn list. The new blck will display directly abve the Add a blck blck. Mve the blck t the psitin where yu want it t display. 2. In the (new HTML blck), click the Cnfiguratin icn. 3. On the Cnfiguring a blck page, enter a Blck title, e.g. 'MapleTA Quiz'. 4. Type sme text int the Cntent bx, e.g. 'G t the quiz'. 5. Select the wrds yu typed and click the Insert/edit link buttn. Cmplete the Insert/edit link windw and click Insert. 6. Test the link. 7. In the Cntent bx, enter brief, clear instructins abut: whether students will need t lg in t the external applicatin hw they can return t the Mdle curse nce they have clicked ut f it using this link. 8. Cmplete the rest f the page as necessary and click Save changes. T create a link frm a Mdle bk r web page t an individual tpic n the curse hme page: 1. On the curse hme page, hide all the tpics except the ne yu want t link t. D this by clicking the Hide icn at the right f each tpic. The Shw icn will replace it: 2. Cpy the resulting page's URL. 3. In the bk r n the web page, create a link using the cpied URL. When the user clicks this link, the single tpic curse page will display. 4. Click the Shw icns fr all the hidden tpics t make them visible again. Resurces: A resurce is any type f nn interactive digital cntent that yu add t yur Mdle curse. In the Weekly utline and Tpic utline frmats, click and select frm the Add a resurce drp dwn list when yu want t add a bk, file, flder, IMS cntent package, label, web page r URL t a curse hme page sectin. Activities: An activity is an item f interactive cntent created using ne f the Mdle tls (e.g. assignment, chat sessin). In the Weekly utline and Tpic utline frmats, click Add an activity t view the available activities and select frm the drp dwn list.

15 UNSW Mdle 2 staff step by step instructins 11 What tls are available in Mdle? Assignment: A tl fr creating gradable items and allwing students t uplad digital cntent in respnse. Students can enter assignment text directly, r submit essays, spreadsheets, presentatins, web pages, phtgraphs r graphics, r small audi r vide clips. Or yu can just use this tl t remind students f ffline assignments they must cmplete. Yu can als return assignments t students nline. Attendance: Use the Attendance blck (the mst efficient way t use the Attendance activity) t recrd students attendance at classes r activities, t reprt n attendance, r t change the attendance settings. In the student view f Mdle, the same blck will display an attendance reprt t the individual student. Blg: A blg (weblg) is an nline jurnal, with entries rganised chrnlgically with the mst recent first. Blgs can be a grup r an individual effrt. Blgs in Mdle are either: user based each user has their wn nn curse specific blg r curse based OU (Open University) blgs. Bk: A Mdle bk (very similar t the Learning Mdule tl in the Blackbard LMS) is a multipage resurce that is frmatted like a bk, cntaining main chapters and subchapters. A gd way t keep the curse hme page neat and shrt is t place lessn cntent within a bk. Chat: The Chat tl allws students and teachers t have real time synchrnus text based discussin in an nline chat rm. (Fr audi chat, see Vice tls r Wimba Classrm belw.) Chice: Use this tl t present students with a single questin and a number f answers t chse frm (e.g. fr a discussin starting pint, a quick pll, r t establish preferred arrangements fr an excursin). Yu can allw participants t change their chices, r set the activity t clse r lck dwn n a specific date, allwing participants t change their minds several times befre finalising their chice. Database: With the Database activity, yu and yur students can cllabrate n building a searchable bank f recrd entries relating t any tpic. The frmat and structure f the entries can be almst unlimited, including images, files, URLs, numbers and text. Dialgue: A tw way text based cmmunicatin tl. Yu might use Dialgue fr a private cnversatin between yu and a student, r between yu and all the members f a grup. Any participant can attach files t a dialgue pst. All dialgue activities are lgged and can be viewed by bth students and teachers. Feedback: A student survey tl. Yu can view respnses in summary r analysis frmat, r by individual user. Yu can specify annymus respnse if yu wish. Frum: An nline discussin bard where yu and yur students can pst messages t each ther, and keep track f individual discussins. Glssary: A tl fr embedding glssaries f terms used by practitiners in yur area f study.

16 UNSW Mdle 2 staff step by step instructins 12 Grup selectin: This tl allws yu t set up grups and then let students chse which grup they want t jin. Yu can specify maximum numbers fr the grups. Gradebk: Yu can recrd, track and calculate grades within Mdle. The grading tl is cmplex and flexible. Yu can prvide feedback t students in the frm f cmments, which can be standardised using a scale. Yu can use scales fr any kind f assessable activity except an autmatically graded quiz. Lessn: Using lessns, yu can create prgrammed learning units in which each crrect answer brings up a new piece f infrmatin and a new questin, r in which yu simply enfrce sequential viewing f varius pieces f cntent. Mdle s Lessn tl lets yu create quite cmplex branching lessns. Participants list: Yu can use the Participants list t view the curse participants by grup r rle, t anntate participants individually r cllectively, t message individuals, grups r classes, and t dwnlad filtered lists as CSV files. 1. In the Navigatin blck, fr the relevant curse, click Participants. A list f all curse participants displays. 2. Filter the list by either: selecting the desired participants frm the Current rle drp dwn list, r selecting the grup t display frm the Separate grups drp dwn list. A list f the grup members displays. Depending n the settings, yu may need t click Shw all belw the list t view all the selected curse participants r grup members. 3. Belw the list, click Select all, and frm the Chse drp dwn list, select: Send a message t pen a page where yu can enter a message, remve participants frm the recipients list, preview and (in the preview page) send the message Add a new nte t pen a page where yu can add persnal, curse r site specific ntes fr yur wn reference against, fr example, individual students' names Add a cmmn nte t pen a page where yu can add a persnal, curse r sitespecific nte that applies t all participants n the list Dwnlad as CSV t exprt the filtered list as a CSV file t yur cmputer. Quiz: In Mdle, yu can create quizzes with different questin types randmly generate quizzes frm pls f questins allw students t re take quizzes multiple times, and let the sftware take care f the scring. SCORM package: Using this tl, yu can uplad any package f SCORM (Sharable Cntent Object Reference Mdel) cntent t yur Mdle curse. SCORM is a cllectin f specificatins that enable interperability, accessibility and reusability f web based learning cntent. This type f

Survey: Mdle s survey tl is quite limited, nly allwing yu t get student feedback abut yur curse using preset questins. Fr a mre cmprehensive survey, we recmmend that yu use the Feedback tl. Turnitin Assignment: UNSW uses three Turnitin prducts: OriginalityCheck, GradeMark (including e rater) and PeerMark. OriginalityCheck checks submitted assignments against Turnitin s databases fr riginality; GradeMark allws yu t digitally mark up and give feedback n student submissins, and PeerMark is a student peer review and grading tl. Instructins n using Turnitin prducts with Mdle 2 are available n the Turnitin supprt site. Vice activities (Authring, Bard, , Pdcaster, Presentatin): Vice activities allw yu t incrprate audi recrdings int yur curse. Yu can create audi cntent t be played within the curse r dwnladed as a pdcast, set up an asynchrnus vice based message bard, send and receive vice s and present web cntent, images and PDFs with audi instructins, narratin r messages, t which students can respnd with audi and text cmments. Wiki: Wikis are cllectins f cllabratively authred web pages, beginning with a hme page that students can edit, and t which they can link mre pages. Changes t all pages are visible using the page histry functin. Yu can create wikis at bth class and grup level. Wimba Classrm and Wimba Vice: Wimba Classrm is a live virtual classrm supprting multiway audi, vide, applicatin sharing, plling and cntent display. Wrkshp: Mre structured than Assignments, the Wrkshp tl allws the instructr t define several aspects f a task by setting up multi criterin evaluatin r rubrics. Students submit their wn wrk; then they assess thers submissins, cnsidering each task aspect separately, giving feedback, and suggesting a grade. They are then graded n bth their wn submissin and their effectiveness in assessing their peers wrk.

Cpyright law is intended t prvide a balance between rewarding creatrs fr the use f their wrks and allwing users reasnable access t thse wrks. It is very likely yu will want t include cpyright prtected material in yur Blackbard r Mdle curse. Nte that ensuring the crrect usage and attributin f such material is yur persnal respnsibility, and that yu can be held liable fr illegal cpying r reprductin f cpyrighted wrks Library nline resurces link t them crrectly When using the UNSW Library's nline cntent in Blackbard r Mdle 1. Find the publisher f the resurce by checking the catalgue ( 2. Check the licence cnditins database ( fr that publisher t: see if yu are allwed t create a link find instructins n creating a link t an article r t a publisher's website. 3. Place the link yu created in the apprpriate lcatin in yur nline curse. Fr further infrmatin abut including Library cntent in yur curse, visit this page f the Library's website ( Cpyright guidelines UNSW Gvernance Supprt administers a range f statutry and internal cmpliance bligatins, including cpyright. Fr imprtant infrmatin and guidelines relating t cpyright: 1. G t the Gvernance Supprt page ( click Cpyright and select Teaching supprt frm the drp dwn menu. 2. If prmpted, lg in using yur zpass and UniPass. 3. The first page f the Teaching Supprt site displays. Use the sub menu n the left t discver the apprpriate surce type, delivery methd and guidelines fr the item yu want t include in yur Blackbard r Mdle curse. In the Settings blck, under Curse administratin, click Edit settings. 2. On the Edit curse settings page, make changes as necessary. (Click the Help buttn fr mre infrmatin abut each field.) 3. Click Save changes. 4. On the curse hme page, in the Settings blck, click Switch rle t and select Student frm the list, t view the changes as a student will see them.

Mve [cntent item] Click and drag icn t mve the cntent item up r dwn in the list. Mve right Indent the cntent item. (A Mve left icn will display.) Update Access the Updating page fr the item. Delete Remve the cntent item. (A cnfirmatin dialg bx will display.) Hide [cntent item] Make the cntent item invisible t students. (A clsed eye icn will display. Click the clsed eye t re display the item.) Indicates whether grups are being used fr the cntent item. Grups Tggles thrugh N grups, Separate grups, Visible grups. Assign rles Assign rles t users in relatin t the cntent item. (This can nly be dne by the system administratr.) Mve [week/ tpic] Click and drag the icn t mve the tpic up r dwn in the list. Edit [week/ tpic] summary Click t change the general infrmatin fr each week r theme, which displays abve cntent items in the sectin. Shw nly this tpic Remve all ther tpics frm view. (Icn is replaced by Shw all tpics icn.) Highlight this tpic as the current tpic Adds bands f clur t the left and right f the tpic. Hide [week/ tpic] Make the tpic invisible t students. (Tpic displays as Nt available.) Blck icns Make the blck invisible t students. (A clsed eye icn will Hide display and the blck will be greyed ut. Click the clsed eye t redisplay the blck.) Cnfiguratin Specify where and hw the blck displays n the page. Delete Remve the blck. (A cnfirmatin dialg bx will nt display.) Mve Mve the blck up r dwn. Click icn, then click chsen new lcatin. Hide [blck name] blck Tggle t cllapse and expand the blck. Mve this t the dck Remves the blck frm the right hand panel, making it accessible using a tab at the left f the screen.

This applies bth t files yu're adding and t images yu're embedding in the curse. If yu dn't use legacy curse files, and instead uplad files and images directly t a curse, yu can create issues relating t: linking t files within a curse editing files file management and curse rllver. If yu tend t perfrm lts f edits n resurce files and images, and t d s n the fly, at the last mment, it is mst unwise t uplad them directly t a curse. Get them right n yur wn cmputer, r in the private files area, then mve them int legacy curse files when they're ready fr use in a curse. Issues? What issues? Links and instances When yu 'link' t a resurce that is nt in legacy curse files, yu in fact create a separate instance f the resurce behind the scenes in Mdle. Every time yu 'link' t the resurce, yu create a new instance. When yu want t update the resurce, yu must update all f these instances f it. If yu use legacy curse files, nly ne instance f the resurce exists within the curse, s yu nly have t update that. If yu want t link t the resurce frm several places, yu cannt reuse the first link yu created, because the link in the HTML editr cntains a reference t a temprary database lcatin). That is, yu can't Cpy Image Lcatin and Paste it int a new place in the curse. Yu have t create a new link (and a new instance f the resurce). This practice can easily lead t strage prblems. T ensure that yu avid this prliferatin f instances f files r images, when yu are inserting a file frm legacy curse files int a curse, make sure yu check the Link external check bx.

Once yu uplad curse files t the legacy curse files area, anyne with curse access can see the files. nly uplad items yu are happy fr students t see. If files are nt ready fr students t view, uplad them t the private files area until yu have finished wrking n them. The private files area is a gd place t keep them if yu are likely t want t link t them frm several different curses. Then yu and yur students can: begin adding entries in the Add entry page, either individually r by uplading a.csv file cmment n and rate submissins, if yu've enabled this view individual database entries r a list, and search and srt the database.
