1 ArcGIS Online Tutorial ArcGIS Online allows users to make interactive maps or applications and easily share them with others. The University of Minnesota has an organizational account that can be logged into using your x.500 number for convenience. To request an account through the University, please contact otherwise, a public account can also be created and used. LOGGING ON TO UNIVERSITY ACCOUNT 1. In your account, you should have received a message from ArcGIS Notifications. 2. Follow the link in the to the University of Minnesota ArcGIS Online homepage. You will be prompted to sign in to the account. Click on the x.500 option. On the following page enter in your account information. 3. After logging in, you will automatically be redirected back to the University of Minnesota ArcGIS Online homepage.( To log in again, use this link: 1

2 LOGGING ON TO ARCGIS ONLINE ACCOUNT (non-university of Minnesota) 1. Go to: 2. Click SIGN IN in the upper right-hand corner. 3. If you have an Esri Global Account, you can register it to create an ArcGIS Public Account. If you do not have a global account, create a public account. 4. On the next page either fill in your Esri Global Account information (username and password) or enter in information to create a public account. Click Register/Create My Account. Accept the terms. 5. You will be redirected to your profile page. You can now follow the instructions below. CREATING A MAP In this short exercise you will learn how to turn a spreadsheet into an interactive web map like the one at this link: 1. To get exercise data navigate to At the bottom of the page look for the ArcGIS Online Tutorial heading. Click on the Workshop Materials link to download the tutorial data. You should have downloaded a zipped file. Save this file to your Local Disk (C: ) 2. Extract the zip file. Within in it should be three files, a PDF of instructions, PowerPoint and a CSV file titled Goldy. Look at the CSV file to see what you will be mapping. 3. Back in ArcGIS Online, click on the MAP tab at the top of the page (if the map tab does not appear, click on NEW MAP next to your username). This will bring up a map editor window. 2

3 4. From the toolbar, select a basemap. 5. There are two ways to add the Goldy data to the map. One way is to use the Add button on the toolbar and navigate to the CSV file to upload it. 6. Another method is to drag and drop the CSV file onto the ArcGIS Online map document. 7. Because the CSV file had latitude and longitude coordinates, there are now points on the map for each one of the records in the CSV file. 8. Clicking on the down arrow next to the layer Goldy will show all of the options that are available. Explore these options. Rename the layer to Goldy Spottings. Play with the layer transparency and explore the table to see how it looks in ArcOnline. 3

4 9. Click Save on the toolbar to title your map and save it to your account. You will need to enter in a title and tags. The map description is optional. Click Save Map when you are satisfied with your descriptions. 10. You will now change the symbology of these points. Click on the drop down menu for the layer Goldy Spottings and click on Change Symbols. Since we are mapping locations, we will use A Single Symbol. Click on Change Symbol and a new box will pop up with different symbol options. 11. Choose a symbol that you like from the options. You can change its size with the bar at the bottom. Click DONE. 12. To exit out of the Change Symbols dialog box, click on DONE CHANGING SYMBOLS at the bottom of the page. 13. Next, you will create and configure a pop up box that will show what Goldy is doing with text and a photo. Again click on the down arrow next to the Goldy Spottings layer and select Configure Pop-Up. 14. Within the Pop-up Properties box, we will change our Display to A Custom Attribute Display. 4

5 15. Click the green CONFIGURE button to bring up the pop-up box editor. 16. Within this box, you can edit the text of the pop-up (color, style, etc.). This customization is up to you; however, we will create a field that will grab the activity that Goldy is doing. Type the following into the box: 17. Next, you will add the text from the activity field to this heading. Click on the small plus sign on the right side of the box. You will see a drop down list of all the column headings from out table. Select the correct one. (HINT: Remember that the field in our original data that had what Goldy was doing was called ACTIVITY). 18. Your text should now look something like this: Activity: {ACTIVITY}. This formula ensures that for each pop-up box that is opened, the Activity field will be populated with the Activity field from the original table of data 19. Feel free to change fonts or add a title. Click OK. Your pop-up is now updated. 20. Within the Pop-up Properties window, you will now add a photo to your pop-up box. The URL field in the CSV has a unique URL to a photo for each record. You will use this field to insert a thumbnail of the photo into your pop-up. 5

6 21. Click the grey ADD button on the menu and select image. A new box should come up. 22. You will fill in some of these fields with the column headers from the CSV: For title, make the field blank. For caption, choose the PHOTCRED field from the drop down list. For the URL field and the Link field, choose URL. Your configuration should like this: 23. Click OK. On the next page click the blue SAVE POP-UP button to exit out of the properties side bar. Your pop-ups will now have the activity and a photo of Goldy. Save your map. 24. This map is ready to share via its current URL. However, you will also make a cleaner web application. Click SHARE on the top toolbar. A new window will pop up. Choose to share this with Everyone and then click on MAKE A WEB APPLICATION. 25. In the next window, chose the format of the web application. There are many options and you can preview them by clicking on Publish then Preview. Once you find a template you like, click on Publish then Publish. 6

7 26. On the next screen, enter a title and summary for your application (it can be the same as your map title and description). Click SAVE AND PUBLISH. 27. On the next screen click the blue go to the item now link. 28. Click Open and View Application if needed. Your application is now live and ready to share! Copy and paste the URL to begin sharing. 7
