Patent Search
Field Search Supports English, Chinese, French and German Bilingual Retrieval 4 different methods of searching Field Search fields to specify your search. Over 100 million patent records from major patent jurisdictions around the world. Data is updated every week.
Command Search Manually enter search commands Or input chains of queries to allow PatSnap to automatically generate the correct code and string search queries together. Command codes that are used within PatSnap are listed here.
Operators and truncation options We have numerous operators within PatSnap. The most common are, AND, OR and NOT. E.g: There are several other options supported within PatSnap that accommodate more advanced searching: ^n is used to specify weighting, or importance, of particular keywords. E.g. DNA^2 OR RNA will pull forward results that mention both keywords, but patents that mention DNA more often will be deemed more important and feature higher up the relevancy sorting. ~n and $Wn are both proximity search operators. E.g. DNA RNA ~5 will find results that have DNA and RNA within 5 words of one another. DNA $W5 RNA $W5 cell will find results with DNA, RNA and cell within 5 words of one another. 5 can be replaced by any whole number. $PREn refers to word ordering. E.g. DNA $PRE5 RNA will retrieve results where DNA is a maximum of 5 words in front of RNA. $Ws allows you to search for words that appear in the same sentence. E.g. DNA $Ws RNA will find all documents in which DNA and RNA appear together in at least one sentence. This shows the status of retrieval action for each record.? is the character-specific wildcard. E.g. immuni?? Will find all patents that contain a word beginning immuni- and any two character ending. * is the non character-specific wildcard. E.g. immuni* Will find all patents that contain a word beginning immuni- and any possible ending.
Bulk Search Input up to 500 patent publication numbers here. PatSnap retrieves these patents from the database, which can then be saved and downloaded immediately. This shows the status of retrieval action for each record.
International Classification search Search by IPC number or keywords to bring up the appropriate classification list below. Scroll to browse through listed results. Hover over any classification to get the patent search option.
Can I search the granted patents only? Using the database selection button, you can choose to just search through issued patents.
How to conduct an effective patent search 1. Search the web to get the most up to date information regarding that particular area of work. From there, ascertain pertinent keywords about the area of work and note them down. 2. Experiment with entering a few of the keywords in the search bar and see what results you get. Look out for known assignees or inventors who operate in this area of technology, and examine those first for possible keywords. Usually the word list becomes separated at this point to cover different aspects of the invention. 3. Find the relevant classification code(s) based upon the results you get from your initial search. Keep cycling through the different classifications (IPC, UPC, ECLA) until you identify the appropriate classes and subclasses. 4. Search the database to identify patents in the classes/subclasses identified. 5. Examine the ABSTRACT & IMAGE of these patents to identify those resembling your device. After completing Steps 1 to 5, examine the patents for: a) Companies and inventors that appear frequently. Search their entire portfolios to identify other patents that may be of interest but may not have matched with your keywords. b) Look for words and combinations of words in the patents of interest. Sort the words into groups (what it does, how it does it, type, how its structured, etc.) Search for other patents containing these words in an attempt to identify more patents in the area of interest. Be aware of what portion of the patent you are searching (I.e. All, Title, Claims etc.) c) Examine the documents cited as a reference by the patent of interest. Keep cycling through steps 1 to 5 over and over until no more patents of interest are identified.
