1 Mouseless Internet Browsing for Open V/Vmax Devices Mouseless Browsing (MLB) is a technique that enables you to browse the Internet without using a mouse. This innovative functionality adds small boxes with unique ID numbers to every selectable element (link, button, text field, etc.) on the current web page. To trigger an action on the web page (follow a link, press a button, select a text field, etc.), you simply enter the corresponding ID number and select Enter. The open V/Vmax devices use the following specific tools to enable users to take advantage of MLB: Onscreen keyboards. These special pages (included in the DynaVox Series 5 software) enable you to operate Windows software applications using the same selection method that you use in the Series 5 software. Firefox web browser with MLB extension. Mouseless browsing is currently available as an extension of the Mozilla Firefox web browsing software. Overview of Onscreen Keyboards DynaVox Series 5 onscreen keyboards are special keyboard pages that enable you to interact with and operate other Windows software applications (called target applications) that reside on your V/Vmax device, outside of your DynaVox software. 2 When you are using an onscreen keyboard, the Series 5 communication page will disappear. In its place, the onscreen keyboard will float (like a popup) on the Windows desktop. Selecting buttons on the onscreen keyboard will send words, phrases, symbols and commands into the target application. DynaVox onscreen keyboards always display a title bar that contains two buttons: The Back button (the left-pointing arrow) closes the onscreen keyboard and changes the Series 5 software back to normal communication mode. Back Position The Position button (the box with the right-pointing arrow) moves the onscreen keyboard around the screen, so that you can get it out of the way of your target application. Onscreen Keyboard title bar buttons Tip: You may also move an onscreen keyboard around the screen by selecting the title bar and dragging the onscreen keyboard to a new location. A well-designed onscreen keyboard will get your information to the target application using the minimum amount of required effort. It will also provide the largest amount of screen space possible to view the target application. For example: suppose you want to use the Google search engine. You open your web browser and navigate to the Google home page ( You can use an onscreen keyboard to send text or computer commands directly to the target application (the web browser showing the Google page). The alternative to using an onscreen keyboard would be to enter text in the Message Window of a traditional Series 5 page, and then use the Send to Next Window behavior to send the text to the web browser. Small and Specialized Onscreen keyboards are designed to be as small as possible so that the majority of the screen is filled with the target application. Additionally, onscreen keyboards do not have to follow the traditional computer keyboard design - they are not limited to an alphanumeric layout, nor do they have to transmit only one character at a time. The examples below show onscreen keyboards that are designed to open web sites, move the mouse pointer on the screen and enter numbers. Onscreen Keyboard 3 Web Onscreen Keyboard 3 Mouse 2 DynaVox Technologies

3 The recommended strategy is to design a set of several onscreen keyboards, with each one meeting a specific need. Each onscreen keyboard should contain only the functions that are essential to meeting that need, as well as links (using the Go to Page behavior) to other onscreen keyboards that serve different purposes. For example: when the Google website opens in your web browser, the cursor automatically appears in the search box, so your "Google searching" onscreen keyboard does not need buttons that provide mouse movement commands. It only needs alphanumeric characters and an Enter button. Tip: You could program the Enter button with a second behavior (Go to Page) that links to a different onscreen keyboard that provides mouse movement commands. Keeping only the necessary buttons on an onscreen keyboard frees up more screen space for the target application. This streamlining practice also makes individuals who use the scanning selection method more efficient - it removes the need to scan through unnecessary buttons. Tip: To get really efficient, you can program buttons on your onscreen keyboards to perform specific tasks. For example, you could program one button to open an page (i.e., Gmail.com, my.yahoo.com, etc.), another button to enter your username, and another button to enter your password. DynaVox Onscreen Keyboards vs. Windows Onscreen Keyboards The main difference between DynaVox onscreen keyboards and Windows onscreen keyboards is the selection method. DynaVox onscreen keyboards enable you to use your current selection method (scanning, joystick, headmouse, touch enter, audio touch, etc.) to control both a keyboard and a mouse cursor. You can also switch between manipulating the target application and using your regular DynaVox communication pages with one selection (selecting the Back button in the onscreen keyboard title bar). Onscreen keyboards supplied by other Windows applications may not respond to your DynaVox selection method. It will also require more effort on your part to change from them to your DynaVox communication pages. Reference: The DynaVox Series 5 Searchable Help contains step-by-step instructions on modifying and resizing your onscreen keyboards. The Searchable Help is available on your V/Vmax device or on CD. To learn more, do a keyword search on "modifying an onscreen keyboard." Mouseless Internet Browsing for Open V/Vmax Devices Part # B 3

4 Overview of Mouseless Browsing When mouseless browsing is enabled on your V/Vmax device, you can use the number pad buttons on a DynaVox onscreen keyboard (see the example to the right) to select a link, rather than moving a mouse pointer into position and clicking a button to enter your selection. Mouseless browsing is currently available as an extension to the Mozilla Firefox web browser. Both the Firefox web browser and the MLB extension were included with the 1.03 software release of the DynaVox Series 5 software. The example below shows an example screen shot of mouseless browsing. The ID numbers are shown next to each link. 5 Downloading and Installing Firefox and the MLB Extension Tip: If your V/Vmax device was running software version 1.03 when you received it, you do not need to complete these steps. If you used a DynaVox upgrade file to upgrade from a previous software version to version 1.03, then you need to download Firefox (and the MLB extension) and install them on your open V/Vmax device. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Make sure that your V/Vmax device has an active connection to the Internet, and that the Windows desktop is visible (you can minimize the DynaVox Series 5 software by selecting the Minimize button next to the? button in the top left corner of the title bar). 2. Double-select the Internet Explorer shortcut on your Windows desktop to launch the Internet Explorer web browser. 3. Browse to 4. Select the link to download the current version of Firefox. Refer to the example to the right (the version number may differ). Firefox download link (example) 5. Save the file to the Windows desktop of your V/Vmax hard drive. 6. Once the file has downloaded completely, close the Internet Explorer web browser. 7. On the Windows desktop, double-select the Firefox Setup file that you just downloaded. 8. Select Run to begin the installation process. 9. Follow the onscreen prompts to install Firefox on your V/Vmax device. (We recommended that you accept all standard settings.) 10. At the end of the installation process, make sure that the Launch Mozilla Firefox Now check box is checked, and select the Finish button. Tip: It is recommended that you import all of the settings (bookmarks, home page, etc.) from Microsoft Internet Explorer. If you want to make Firefox your default browser, select the Yes button in the Default Browser window. 11. Browse to Enter mouseless browsing in the search box at the top of the page and select the Search button. 13. When that page opens, select the link to Mouseless Browsing. The Add-ons window will open, showing the Mouseless Browsing extension. Select the Restart Firefox button to complete the installation. Link for installing MLB extension 17. Firefox will restart, displaying the same web content that was previously open. The mouseless browsing ID numbers should be visible next to each selectable item on the page (refer to the example screen shown on page 4). If they are not, follow the steps in the next section to enable the extension. Enable/Disable Mouseless Browsing through Firefox Tip: The MLB extension is initially disabled on V/Vmax devices that are running software version 1.03 when shipped. To enable or disable the MLB extension in your Firefox browser, follow these steps: 1. Make sure that the Windows desktop is visible (you can minimize the DynaVox Series 5 software by selecting the Minimize button next to the? button in the top left corner of the title bar). 2. Launch the Firefox web browser by selecting the Mozilla Firefox shortcut on the Windows desktop (or by selecting a button on a page or popup that you have programmed to launch Firefox). 3. Select the Tools menu item in the Firefox browser window. Firefox Windows icon 4. Select Add-ons in the drop-down menu. The Add-ons window will open. 5. Select Mouseless Browsing. 6. To change the status of the Mouseless Browsing extension, do one of the following: To enable mouseless browsing, select the Enable button. To disable mouseless browsing, select the Disable button. 7. Select the X button in the top right corner to close the Add-ons window. Firefox Add-ons window 8. Select the X button in the top right corner to close the Firefox browser. The option that you chose in step 6 will be active the next time that you launch Firefox. 6 DynaVox Technologies

10 Navigation Tips All users can benefit from these helpful tips on using onscreen keyboards to navigate web pages: If the arrow button (up, down, left, right) or the page movement buttons (Page Up, Page Down, Page Back and Page Forward) stop working, select the Reload Page button on the onscreen keyboard. This will refresh the current web page and should reset the navigational buttons so that they work properly. Individuals that use the scanning selection method should make sure that the Up a Level Arrow check box in the Scanning Settings menu is selected. Two groups of navigational buttons on the onscreen keyboard are set up with group scanning - the arrow buttons (up, down, left, right) and the page movement buttons (Page Up, Page Down, Page Back and Page Forward). The group scanning setup will focus the scan within these groups of buttons in order to get to the desired target faster. To get out of that intended loop, select the Up Arrow once it's displayed. 10 DynaVox Technologies
