It specifies requirements and methods to measure image quality in lighting environments that can cause specular and diffuse reflections from the screen. References Developer and source: ISO? International Organisation for Standardization Year of development / publication, updates etc: 1998 General Description Purpose: This part of ISO 9241 establishes image quality requirements for VDTs used in luminous environments that may cause reflections from the screen. The requirements are stated as performance or design specifications, and test methods are provided. The objective of this part of ISO 9241 is to grant a useful and acceptable image quality in a bright environment. It specifies methods of measurement of glare and reflections from the surface of display screens, including those with surface treatments. Type (e.g. observation, questionnaire, interview, checklist, measurement instrument, etc.): Guidance material Technical description of method or tool etc Description of the content/study:
The norm applies to the ergonomic design of direct-view electronic displays for office tasks, including such activities as data entry, text processing and interactive inquiry. Office tasks are performed indoors, without exposure to direct sunlight. It comprises of several chapters. It includes: Definitions of the relevant terms and symbols used Guiding principles, which are very short and only generic. Requirements of the image quality of display units in a bright environment, if reflexion occurs. The requirements cover: image luminance ratio with reflections; specular reflection luminance ratio; reflection control method and effect on image quality; and the reference luminous environment, e.g. lighting and illumination, providing concrete values which shall be fulfilled. Though intended for office tasks, the recommendations can possibly be appropriate for other tasks, including process control, graphic design and computer-aided design, but their applicability has not been established. It applies to monochrome and multicolour displays. Evaluation methods with measurements and calculations. The standard includes a detailed section describing how to measure and calculate reflections, describing the equipment to be used and how its set-up, methods of measurements, formulas for calculation. The test method is limited to VDTs whose colour and/or luminance contrast does not vary strongly as a function of the viewing direction, and whose reflection properties do not vary as a function of the logical state of the screen. The test method is suitable for emissive VDT technologies, such as cathode ray tubes (CRT), and some flat panels. The foling displays and similar types are excluded from the scope of this part of ISO 9241: multi-user projection displays, transparent displays and virtual image displays. The standard also includes four annexes: an alternative, visual performance-based test method involving a subject to read; a graphical report format; a worked example with model calculations; and a bibliography. Note: VDTs using display devices for which the test method of this part of ISO 9241 is not suitable (for example, liquid crystal displays) are directed to ISO :2002 Ergonomic Requirements For Work With Visual Display Based On Flat Panels - Part 2: Ergonomic Requirements For Flat Panel Displays. But this standard has been revised by: ISO :2008. Technical requirements for using the method, tool, etc: The norm is available as paper version or electronically as a PDF document. No special technical requirements are necessary for applying the norm. Measure/Response Type: Results obtained and interpretation: Evaluation Advantages: Intended to measure screen reflections that might affect user comfort and task performance when using display screen equipment Disadvantages:
Very technical, aimed at engineers. Outdated and superseded by several other norms, taking new display technologies into account. Alternative Methods: Important note: ISO :1998 has the status?withdrawal of International Standard? and has been revised by ISO :2008, Ergonomics of human-system interaction -- Part 302: Terminology for electronic visual displays. This norm provides a comprehensive terminology for electronic visual displays and explains the terms, definitions and equations used in the other parts of ISO Furthermore the foling ISO norm have to be considered in conjunction with ISO :2008: ISO :2011, Ergonomics of human-system interaction -- Part 303: Requirements for electronic visual displays. It establishes image-quality requirements, as well as providing guidelines, for electronic visual displays. These are given in the form of generic (independent of technology, task and environment) performance specifications and recommendations that will ensure effective and comfortable viewing conditions for users with normal or adjusted-to-normal eyesight. The requirements are intended to apply to any kind of display technology. ISO :2008, Ergonomics of human-system interaction -- Part 304: User performance test methods for electronic visual displays. It provides guidance for assessing the visual ergonomics of display technologies with user performance test methods (as opposed to the optical test methods given in ISO ). Unlike the other parts in the subseries which focus on optical and electronic measurements, this part sets out methods which involve testing how people perform when using the display. The method can be used with any display technology. Its use will help to ensure that, for a given context of use, a display meets minimum visual ergonomics requirements. It covers only visual attributes and does not address the ergonomics or usability of the whole product that houses a visual display. The main users of ISO :2008 will be those who procure displays or who need to measure display performance during product development. Its application assumes a background in behavioural science. ISO :2008, Ergonomics of human-system interaction -- Part 305: Optical laboratory test methods for electronic visual displays, which establishes optical test and expert observation methods for evaluating a visual display against the requirements in ISO It contains very detailed instructions on taking display measurements. ISO :2008 Ergonomics of human-system interaction -- Part 307: Analysis and compliance test methods for electronic visual displays. This norm establishes test methods for the analysis of a variety of visual display technologies, tasks and environments. It uses the measurement procedures of ISO and the generic requirements of ISO to define compliance routes suitable for the different technologies and intended contexts. It contains very detailed instructions on assessing whether a display meets the ergonomics requirements set out in part 303. Usability (ease of use, efficiency, effectiveness) Ease of use: Very technical descriptions and detailed formulas. Requires specific test equipment to perfom measurements of glare and reflection. Efficiency: Setting up test equipment, performing measurements and evaluating the results seems to be very timeconsuming.
Effectiveness: Needs background knowledge to be applied in practice. Outdated, as it refers to primarily CRT display technology. One reason why it has been superseded by other norms. Ease of use: Efficiency: Effectiveness: Constraints concerning conditions of use: This is a technical standard that assumes a good working knowledge of light measurement. The main audience is display engineers who want to make sure that anti-reflection treatments do not degrade image quality. It is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 8995, ISO , ISO and ISO which all provide guidance for ergonomics of visual display terminals (VDTs). For instance, anti-glare or antireflection treatment shall conform to the relevant chapters in ISO and ISO Reliability: Validity: Required effort (to conduct & to analyse): n/a Level of HF expertise needed (required user qualification) High: high level of expertise required, only for experts, lots of training required Other expertise needed (required user qualification): This is a technical standard that assumes a good working knowledge of light measurement. The main audience is display engineers who want to make sure that anti-reflection treatments do not degrade image quality. Cost Information The norm has been withdrawn and is superseded by several other norms (see above). Therefore it cannot be purchased at ISO.org. Test equipment (photometer) required. Experiences of use by SESAR partners (including references):
not available Reported and/or published experiences of use (including references): not available Applicability to lifecycle phase (E-OCVM): The guideline is of relevance after scope and feasibility are analysed and the decision for using certain displays has to be made. Thus the guideline applies for V3 or after. Application Area: Though intended for office tasks, the recommendations can possibly be appropriate for other tasks, including process control, graphic design and computer-aided design. Keywords: Ergonomics, Office machines, Display devices (computers), Office equipment, Computer terminals, Computer peripheral equipment, Computers, Reflection, Reflection factor, Reflectance factor, Reflective materials, Cathode-ray tubes, Computer hardware, Visual perception, Luminance, Performance, Tolerances of position, Mathematical calculations, Test equipment, Angles (geometry), Conformity, Accuracy, Error correction, Testing conditions, Performance testing, Graphical methods, Reports, Bibliography Short Description: This part of ISO 9241 aims to help designers measure screen reflections that might affect user comfort and task performance when using display screen equipment.
