4 20-Minute Website Check for SEO There are many ways that can help improve your website s ranking on search engines. Sometimes making a few simple tweaks can boost your search ranking. This checklist is a STARTING POINT for good SEO. It doesn t mean these are the only things you need to do. These are simply healthy things to help your ranking and provide your prospects a better web experience. Below is a 20-minute website check for your website s SEO. Note: The amount of time you consume during your check might be a bit different from mine each website is constrained by its own loading time as well as its unique condition. q Checking if your site is indexed [00:00-01:47] Is your site showing up on Google? Before you even start optimizing your website for search engines, you need to check first if your site is being indexed on Google. This way, you have a clear picture of how Google sees your website as a whole so that you can do your optimization based on that. If it is indexed, that means that your site is not penalized. In the case it is not, your site might have been considered as spam and therefore you need to file for reconsideration for that. Just go to the Google search and enter your own domain name as shown above. Then see if your site is coming up. If it is coming up, it s good. This at least means Google can see your site Hitman Advertising Page 4

5 If your site isn t coming up, this means your site is deindexed on Google. This would mean your site is penalized for being considered a spam site. What you ll need to do is fix the problem and go to this page google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35843 and have Google reconsider you after the problem is fixed. You may have been de-indexed because... Your site is a carbon copy of another website You have too much text copied from another website You purchased a package that gave you 1,000 links in a few days You have too many sites with bad reputations linking to you Your Google Places accounts are duplicated Your site was attacked by spam If you tried to pull one over on Google and they found out Don t worry, all of these problems can normally be fixed. You may need to consult with someone who knows how to fix these type problems. Contact us if you need help. And honestly, if your site can t get indexed, you may be better off building a brand new site with a solid foundation. It s no big deal to rebuild a site and you ll be much better off in the long run Hitman Advertising Page 5

6 q Check to see where you re showing up [01:47-04:30] Are you showing up in the search for your city? Which cities? Don t get too excited yet. If you show up for the search for your domain, that s barely the starting line. Now you want to see how you rank in the search for your city. What you need to do is go to Google and type in your keywords. For a carpet cleaning business, your keywords would be: Carpet Cleaning City (for example, Carpet Cleaning Miami ) For a water damage business, your keywords would be: Water Damage City (for example, Water Damage Miami) For a tile cleaning business, your keywords would be: Tile Cleaning City (for example, Tile Cleaning Miami) For an area rug cleaning business, your keywords would be: Rug Cleaning City or Area Rug Cleaning City For a maid service, your keywords would be: Housekeeping City or Maid Service City For a pressure washing business, your keywords would be: Pressure Washing City For a duct cleaning business, your keywords would be: Duct Cleaning City or Air Duct Cleaning City Do a search for several different cities around you to find out how and where you rank Hitman Advertising Page 6

8 q See what other pages of your site are indexed [04:30-6:30] If your main page it indexed, then you need to find out how many of your other pages are indexed. The more the better. All you need to do is go to Google and put in: site: See the screen example below. Write down how many pages are indexed. Work on eventually getting them all indexed if possible Hitman Advertising Page 8

9 q Check if meta title tags have keywords [6:30-07:30] Your title tag is the MOST important thing on your website. This is what tells the search bots what your site is about. Your title tag alone usually won t get you ranked in Google. Google understands that this is what you are telling them the page is about. They know that many times the title tag doesn t tell the real nature of the subject of your page. However, they do take this into consideration for which keywords to rank your site. You can find the title tag in each page by looking at the very top of the browser. Here you ll see what has been put into the code by your web designer. Problem is, most web designers don t know which keywords are best for cleaning companies, so they don t set them correctly or at all Hitman Advertising Page 9

10 Above is the HTML code of a website. You can go to your site and right click with your mouse. Then click view source code to see this. The highlighted area marked <title> is the title tag. This needs to be set by your web designer on most sites. However, if you have a Wordpress site or some other site design programs, there is often a way to set the title tags. As a side note though, Wordpress is the only one of these do-it-yourself design programs I recommend. All your title tags should be unique on each page. They shouldn t be exactly the same. They should describe what your page is about. Naturally, the description of what your page is about contains your keywords. But do NOT stuff all your keywords into this tag. Google REALLY does not like this and you could even get penalized for stuffing all your keywords into a title tag. Google will cut off the title tag at 70 characters. The title should be less than 70 characters in length and should include some keywords about the page Hitman Advertising Page 10

11 q Check if meta descriptions are added [07:30-09:30] Another important part of the internal code is your description tag. It s not as important as the title tag, in fact the benefit for SEO is little to none, but it s good to have it set correctly. Just like the title tag, it is an important component to show what your site is about. The description tag is what your prospect sees in the search engines when your site comes up. So in many ways, the description is part of your ad and you should use it to sell your company. The description tag should only be 155 characters long. It should include your company name. It should be more of a full sentence that is easily read. It may include keywords, phone numbers, etc. The words in black under the domain name below is the description tag. 13 q Make sure you ve claimed your Google Places [09:30-12:00] For local businesses, this is super important. All you need to do is go to the Google search and put in your company name followed by your city. For example, Carpet Cleaning Nashville Procare. Your Google Places profile should come up with the red (sometimes now grey) Google Places tear drop symbol as seen below. You ll want to make sure your Google Places profile is claimed. Just click on the Google Places tear drop icon and you ll get to your Google Places profile Hitman Advertising Page 13

14 If your profile says that it s Owner-verified this means your profile is claimed and you should be able to log in with your Google log in and make necessary changes. If your profile says, Business owner? you need to CLAIM it NOW by clicking the Business owner? link and setting up your FREE account Hitman Advertising Page 14

15 q Check the number of backlinks [12:00-14:30] Backlinks are links from other websites that point to your website. This is a VERY important part of SEO. Google uses backlinks to judge whether or not your site has merit. A backlink is a vote for your website. Google knows that if your site is any good, it will have other websites linking to it. You can find some of your backlinks by going to Google and searching for links: as shown below. Keep in mind, this won t show all your links, but give you an idea of the amount of links you have Hitman Advertising Page 15

16 q Make sure your site has valuable information [14:30-17:00] If your site doesn t have content that attracts and keeps visitors, you ll be ranked poorly. Google will know if all your visitors come to your site and leave quickly. Additionally, you will never book a cleaning job if you don t give good information. You want to increase the time visitors spend on your site, because the more time they spend the more likely they will hire you. How to increase eye time: Use compelling videos FREE reports with valuable information Tips on cleaning Well laid out website Bullet lists of benefits the clients gets Reviews Estimate forms Specialty cleaning information More stuff to read, more videos to watch 2012 Hitman Advertising Page 16

17 q Check for duplicate or copied text content [17:00-20:00] Google doesn t like duplicated or copied text. Why? Because this just tells Google you have a site of no value. Wouldn t you agree that the best website for the keywords carpet cleaning miami would NOT have text on it copied from another website? Google thinks so too. So my best advice is that if you have text that you ve copied from another website or that was already somewhere on the web before you put it on your site, replace it. Put up uniquely written text. As well, regularly add text to your site. This is why Google loves it when you blog on your website. With blogs you are constantly adding text to your site. It s updated and current. There are a couple ways you can check to see if your site has duplicated text content. These are always 100% accurate, but they ll give you an idea. will show you some of the sites that have a large amount of the same exact text Hitman Advertising Page 17
