1 PROJECT PHOENIX EduTrax Instructional Management Solution Phoenix/EIM ADDING RUBRICS TO TEST ITEMS QUICK GUIDE & ILLUSTRATED HELP Version
2 The Phoenix system supports performance-based questions through the use of rubric scoring. This guide will demonstrate how to assign rubrics to test items prior to administering an assessment. QUICK GUIDE 1. Login to the Phoenix web site and select Rubric/CR Scoring from the Assessment menu (Green). OR navigate to this page from within the Test Management module using the publish page. A button will be provided if any items requiring rubrics have not had them assigned. 2. After making the appropriate selections for task, subject, course, and test, click the checkbox beside the desired question. 3. Select the desired template from the Templates dropdown. 4. When the appropriate template has been selected, click the Confirm rubric selection link in the bottom option bar. 5. Adjust the weighting of the question if desired (1 is the default) by keying in a new weight and clicking the Save rubric link in the bottom option bar. 6. Adjust the verbiage of any of the rubric blocks by clicking on the block (the mouse pointer will turn into a hand). 7. In the text entry box that appears on the left, key in new or updated verbiage that specifically relates to this question. This can be the correct answer, teacher guidelines, etc. Click the Save changes link at the bottom of the text entry box to save. 8. After all the rubric text updating is complete, click the Cancel rubric update to close. 9. Repeat the process in steps 3-8 for each performance-based item listed for the test. 10. 3 ILLUSTRATED HELP GUIDE Before administering an assessment containing one or more rubric-based (performance) items, the actual rubrics to be used must be defined and attached to the appropriate questions. This MUST be done prior to publishing an assessment, which provides the irespond testing files to teachers as well as being accessible through the online testing module. 1. There are TWO methods of accessing the rubric assignment module. The first is by selecting the Rubric / CR Scoring option from the Assessment menu. 2. The second method is by using the publishing tab within the test management module. This tab recognizes when an item that requires a rubric to be defined does not have one assigned and displays the following warning message. Clicking on the goto rubric entry button will also navigate to this page. 3. If using the menu access, select the first item listed in the task dropdown, Add Rubric to Test Item 4. Then select the appropriate subject area and course from the two remaining dropdowns on the top selection bar. 5. A selection box will appear on the left of the page with a dropdown used for selecting any pending assessments requiring a rubric. Select the desired test from the dropdown. NOTE only pending tests with missing rubrics will be listed. Assessment Adding Rubrics to Test Items Page 3
4 6. Once the test is selected, a list will be shown of each question on the test that requires a rubric. A brief description of the question, the ID number and type is shown. NOTE if you navigated to this page from within the test management module publishing tab, all of the steps 3-6 will be done for you and you will be at this point of selecting questions to work with. 7. Clicking on the checkbox beside the desired question will open a new panel on the right side of the page. A dropdown list at the top will provide the ability to select from the list of rubric templates provided by the district. 8. Click the Template dropdown and select the appropriate rubric from the list. NOTE contact the district assessment staff if you need a rubric not listed. Assessment Adding Rubrics to Test Items Page 4
5 9. The selected rubric template will be shown. Confirm that it contains the basic information required, correct number of points, etc. NOTE verbiage details can be adjusted after the selection process. NOTE you can use the scroll bar to slide the rubric left and right if it is too wide for the window. 10. If the rubric meets your needs for this item, click the link at the bottom titled Confirm rubric selection for this question. If this rubric isn t exactly what you need, you can make another selection from the Template dropdown. 11. After confirming the selection, the rubric will redisplay with a couple of changes. The Template selection dropdown is gone and has been replaced by a panel allowing you to weight the rubric. The weighting factor simply multiplies the rubric point values by the weight value when assigning the item to the test. Thus a 4-point rubric with a weight of 2 will be worth 8 points on the actual test. The default weight is 1. Assessment Adding Rubrics to Test Items Page 5
6 12. At this point the rubric is locked in to the question. You can fine tune the rubric in a couple of ways. To change the weight value, key in a new value from 1 to 5 and click the Save rubric for this question link in the bottom option bar. Note that the Current Item value at the right will update with the new total points for the question based on the new weighting factor. 13. Another change you can make is to the specific wording of the rubric. Since most templates are somewhat generic, this gives you the opportunity to customize the wording within the rubric to match the specific question. For instance, the answer to the item would obviously need to be adjusted for the question, as well as the teacher directions within each point value in many cases. Remember this rubric is what the teachers will see during the online score entry. 14. To make adjustments, simply hover the mouse pointer over the block you want to adjust. It should turn into a hand pointer, indicating it is a clickable link. NOTE empty blocks sometimes require finding the center of the block to get the hand symbol to display. Click the mouse once the pointer is displayed. 15. A data entry box will open on the left side of the page. You can key in any text desired that you wish to display in the rubric. The text should be meaningful to the classroom teacher who is evaluating the student response. When you have the text keyed in, click the Save changes link at the bottom of the entry box. 7 16. The rubric will be redisplayed with the changes in place. 17. Continue to update each box within the rubric you wish to adjust. When you have completed updating the rubric you can click the Cancel rubric update link at the bottom to close the rubric. 18. If the test contains multiple performance-based items, repeat the process for each item. 19. You can now return to the test management page if desired to publish the assessment with all rubrics attached. Assessment Adding Rubrics to Test Items Page 7
