4 KEY ELEMENTS OF A WEBSITE the World The terminology related to the Internet and the World includes: ActiveX Cookie Digital Certificate and Cryptography Domain Home page HTML HTTP/HTTPS and FTP Internet Services Providers (ISPs) Podcast Really Simple Syndication, or RSS SSL Web browser Web cache Weblog (or blog ) Wiki XML 4

5 KEY ELEMENTS OF A WEBPAGE the World The term Webpage refers to a set of elements such as: Web site address (URL) Text Hyperlinks (text or graphic) Graphics objects Video/media Interactive elements (buttons, text boxes, radio buttons, check boxes menus and lists 5

6 TYPES OF WEBSITES the World Types of Web sites and the purpose of different types are: Commercial sites.com Academic or educational.edu Organizational (nonprofit).org Governmental sites.gov Search sites Secure vs. unsecure sites https & http Web sites delivering online applications.net Portal sites.info Weblogs blogs Social networking sites Facebook, Twitter, etc. Mapping and geographical imaging sites/applications Google maps Web sites hosted in different countries, the suffix can be:.it Italy.ae Arab Emirates.uk United Kingdom 6

8 SURFING THE WEB the World Navigate the Web using a browser by: 1. Specifying a URL or IP address in a Web browser 2. Moving from one webpage to another using hyperlinks 3. Using the Web browser s forward and back buttons and address bar 4. Going to a Web site s home page 5. Going to the home page of your Web browser 6. Open a page in another browser window 7. Open a new browser tab 8. Go to a browser tab 9. Close a browser tab 8

Going to a Bookmarked/ Favorite Web site or page 3. Moving Bookmarks/Favorite sites between folders 4. Identify that Bookmarks/ Favorites can be shared with other users (via social networking sites, for example) 11

13 BROWSER SETTINGS the World Identify settings that can be modified in a Web browser application, including: 1. Security and privacy settings, including management cookies 2. Changing a browser s default home page 13

14 SURFING THE WEB the World Identify problems associated with using the Web, including: 1. Page not found errors 2. Slow or interrupted page loading 3. Garbled Web page content 4. Pop-up ads 5. Pop-up ad blocker preventing access to legitimate sites 6. Web-based applications not working because of an outdated browser or missing or outdated plugin program 14

Site that masquerade their true purpose and identity Spoofing b. Sites or other online communication that try to acquire sensitive information by fraudulently presenting themselves as a trusted entity, such as government bureau phishing 15

16 INTERNET CONTENT the World Identify ways content is created on the Internet, including: 1. Businesses, schools, governments, institutions and individuals creating Web sites for various purposes (ecommerce, entertainment, etc.) using Web design and programming languages and tools 16

21 INTERNET CONTENT the World 6. Photo, music and video sharing sites that allow people to post, distribute and share digital images, audio or video content 7. News feeds that allow people to distribute/syndicate their own news stories, press releases and other information to subscribers 21

22 SEARCH ENGINES the World Identify ways of searching for information, including: 1. Search engines (including general and special purpose search engines) 2. Indexes, list of links, shared bookmarks, and other sets if suggested links available on the Web sites, blogs and social network sites 3. Relevant links located within the body of online content 4. References from information sources not on the web such as library databases, academic journals, books and other publications 22

23 SEARCH ENGINES the World Use a search engine to search for information, including: 1. Identify effective key words to use in a search 2. Use search strings effectively and strategically 3. Refine a search when the original search generates too many links or links to the wrong type of information 4. Using advanced search tools which allow a search engine user to search and sort by date or other criteria beyond key words 23

24 ASSESSING INFORMATION ON THE WEB the World Identify issues regarding the quality of information found on the Internet, including: 1. Relevance (Does information relate to specific needs?) 2. Reliability (Does information come from a source that can be trusted to provide true and accurate content?) 3. Validity (Can information be verified from more than one source?) 4. Commercial, political or other bias of the site s owner 5. When information found on the Web is sufficient for a specific purpose 24

25 ASSESSING INFORMATION ON THE WEB the World Identify how to evaluate the quality of information found on the Web, including: 1. Understanding the nature of an information source, including: a. Institutional missions behind commercial, academic or media sites b. Weblogs which tend to represent the views of the blogs owner c. Wikis which welcome any input, but may not require qualifications or expertise on the part of contributors or editors 2. Communicating with the creator of a site 3. Analyzing internal links within a site 4. Evaluating search engine ranking results 5. Comparing information found on the Internet with other offline sources such as professional journals to clarify ambiguous or incomplete information 25
