5 KEY ELEMENTS OF A WEBPAGE the World The term Webpage refers to a set of elements such as: Web site address (URL) Text Hyperlinks (text or graphic) Graphics objects Video/media Interactive elements (buttons, text boxes, radio buttons, check boxes menus and lists 5

Indexes, list of links, shared bookmarks, and other sets if suggested links available on the Web sites, blogs and social network sites 3. Relevant links located within the body of online content 4. References from information sources not on the web such as library databases, academic journals, books and other publications 22
23 SEARCH ENGINES the World Use a search engine to search for information, including: 1. Identify effective key words to use in a search 2. Use search strings effectively and strategically 3. Refine a search when the original search generates too many links or links to the wrong type of information 4. Using advanced search tools which allow a search engine user to search and sort by date or other criteria beyond key words 23
24 ASSESSING INFORMATION ON THE WEB the World Identify issues regarding the quality of information found on the Internet, including: 1. Relevance (Does information relate to specific needs?) 2. Reliability (Does information come from a source that can be trusted to provide true and accurate content?) 3. Validity (Can information be verified from more than one source?) 4. Commercial, political or other bias of the site s owner 5. When information found on the Web is sufficient for a specific purpose 24
25 ASSESSING INFORMATION ON THE WEB the World Identify how to evaluate the quality of information found on the Web, including: 1. Understanding the nature of an information source, including: a. Institutional missions behind commercial, academic or media sites b. Weblogs which tend to represent the views of the blogs owner c. Wikis which welcome any input, but may not require qualifications or expertise on the part of contributors or editors 2. Communicating with the creator of a site 3. Analyzing internal links within a site 4. Evaluating search engine ranking results 5. Comparing information found on the Internet with other offline sources such as professional journals to clarify ambiguous or incomplete information 25
