Next Generation LMS Evaluation Summary of Individual Steering Committee Member Evaluations April 20th 2017 Participation The summary data here represents nine of the anticipated twelve individual evaluations from key college and department representatives on the Steering Committee. Overview: Comparative Functionality Ratings

Detailed Feedback 1.1 How would you rate the overall functionality of Brightspace? Please use the 1-5 point scale below. # Answer % Count 1 5 Points: Exceeds functionality expectations 11.11% Points: Meets functionality expectations 22.22% Points: Generally meets functionality expectations with minor to moderate gaps 44.44% Points: Partially meets functionality with significant gaps that require compromise and/or workarounds 22.22% 2
5 1 Point: Does not meet functionality expectations 0.00% 0 6 N/A: Choosing not to evaluate 0.00% 0 Total 100% 9
1.2 Why did Brightspace receive this Functionality score? Basic functions exist, but not very easy to use I love all of the available functions, but I worry that average users will feel overwhelmed and overburderned with the learning curve required for this LMS. The initial functionality for light use is not intuitive and will likely require significant training and support as a part of roll out, adoption, and onward use. For the power user, it's v e r y functional. What I'm seeing as general application among faculty I've spoken with, the D2L functionality is sometimes described as a scary part - several faculty felt it was not user friendly. The quiz question items have more options than Canvas, but there is no "File Response" (students upload one or more files) as an answer to an Assignment or a question in a Quiz, which is critical for my needs. If Brightspace add the functionality, the score will be 4. I prefer the visual interface and functional elements of the desktop version of D2L to its app, and the apparent disconnect in quality between the phone and web applications leads me to lower the score because I d prefer homogenous interfacing. I found that the organization of materials was more flexible, the grade book could be easily customizable, attachments could be made with drag and drop features within the current function. This LMS gives me everything I need and is easy to use. I'm a pretty low-level user though - I use the LMS a lot but not all of it's components. Mostly I post material and I deliver homework through the quiz function. Playing around in D2L however, is so intuitive, I can see ways I could be using the LMS better.
1.3 Key Brightspace Functionality Strengths & Weaknesses: I think quizzes are a feature that is commonly used by LMS users, and I had a number of challenges with this feature. For power users, there are many ways to use D2L that don't seem to be available with Canvas. Student cannot attach files to each question as an answer in an assignment or a test. This is a deal breaker for me. Also hard to figure out how to set up multiple sections in a course. Strengths - attractive, intuitive desktop interface; Weaknesses - more difficult to navigate on phone app, especially if the user is more familiar with the superior interface on the desktop Also, I really don't like the fact that I have to download a different application to take the quizzes. It should really be a part of the webpage. Strengths: ease of adding attachments, organizing material and customizing grade book/assignments. The system has clear growth ability for the full range of faculty functionality. Weaknesses: overall visual appeal to students and faculty. Does everything and is so intuitive I can see how to do more than I've been doing in the past.
2.1 How would you rate the overall usability of Brightspace? Please use the 1-5 point scale below. # Answer % Count 1 5 Points: Exceeds usability expectations 0.00% Points: Meets usability expectations 22.22% Points: Generally meets usability expectations with minor to moderate areas of poor usability 55.56% Points: Partially meets usability expectations with significant areas of poor usability 22.22% Point: Does not meet usability expectations 0.00% 0 6 N/A: Choosing not to evaluate 0.00% 0 Total 100% 9

2.2 Why did Brightspace receive this Usability score? Functions seemed less intuitive Not as intuitive as Canvas Less intuitive than Canvas, but perhaps better than Blackboard (difficult to say now that I know BB so well). I found the user interface to be visually appealing, but not as nice as Canvas. This LMS seems unnecessarily complicated. Not intuitive Layout is somewhat cluttered. There are a lot of different tabs that don t make immediate sense, like awards. The ability to switch between courses is not as easy as I would like. It also lacks the HTML inputs of Canvas and is thus less powerful for content creation. Based on the easy of going into the system and being able to navigate and manage materials. I really liked the more simple layout. It was very intuitive how to create modules, upload documents (love the drag and drop feature), and create assignments. The quiz feature is very good - love that it's set up to include images in the questions (again by drag and drop - excellent). I like that I can create my own columns in the grade book, including calculated columns. While not quite the same as the functionality in Blackboard, this LMS would allow me to continue using the grade book as I have in the past - letting students see how they are doing with different portions of their total grade.
2.3 Key Brightspace Usability Strengths & Weaknesses: User experiences are probably more familiar to Blackboard users, but not as user-friendly as Canvas I felt like I would need to take a course to figure out how to use a number of features. It is difficult to find ways how to do certain things. For example, once a quiz is created, how to add a new question? It took a long time to figure it out. Also hard to figure out how to set up multiple sections in a course. Strengths - content import is intuitive and versatile. It seems to interface well with other programs; Weaknesses Navigability; It isn't that easy to get where I want to go. In-application content creation is difficult and it lacks dimension and versatility. Also, the texture is very flat; it's not user-friendly for students with learning disabilities. Strengths: I found the usability as easy if not easier than Canvas from the faculty prospective. The main strength is that faculty are given more range for how they want to organize their online course material. Weakness: The flexibility Brightspace offers means that there would not be a standardized organization of materials across classes, which could make navigation for the students more challenging. Simple, intuitive. I didn't see many weaknesses but it's possible a more intense user might not like the simplicity of the layout.
3.1 How would you rate the overall functionality of Canvas? Please use the 1-5 point scale below. # Answer % Count 1 5 Points: Exceeds functionality expectations 11.11% Points: Meets functionality expectations 55.56% Points: Generally meets functionality expectations with minor to moderate gaps 33.33% Points: Partially meets functionality with significant gaps that require compromise and/or workarounds 0.00% Point: Does not meet functionality expectations 0.00% 0 6 N/A: Choosing not to evaluate 0.00% 0

3.2 Why did Canvas receive this Functionality score? Functions I use for my course were available Most functions are easier to use than Brightspace I found the available functions to be sufficient and very user friendly. Ease of use. This LMS seems highly functional and usable out of the box. Most of functionalities exist and easier to use, but there are not many options as much as Brightspace. It is well-organized and has a folder-like layout. I also like the integration with other Google products such as Drive and Calendar. While I'm not a huge fan of the visual interface on the web app, I have to appreciate the homogenous experience between the web and phone applications. I was disappointed in several aspects of Canvas. While I think the overall interaction will be easier on the side of the student, I think there are major limitations from the prospective of the faculty. The organization of material is not flexible and could cause several faculty problems when importing their course materials from Blackboard. The grade book is not easily customized. When adding an attachment you first need to add it to our overall files before being able to drag and drop it. I felt the overall functionality of the system would limit faculty usage in the future. It seems to be able to do a lot so that's good but again, the gradebook is very limited and forces me to either do a more simplistic grading scheme or work offline. Also, when I imported an existing course, it was so disorganized I found it easier to just start from scratch.
3.3 Key Canvas Functionality Strengths & Weaknesses: There has been reported issues with importing certain types of content from BB into Canvas Access to community generated plugins via LTI and contents are great for integrating content and services from other Canvas users and third party service providers " Less options than D2L (but the ease of the current options superseded this concern for me). Will be easy to adopt for new users and for those building new courses who've been using Blackboard. Failed importing courses from Blackboard. It was due to the storage limit of the account. After removing a few big files, the importing worked. Strengths - Navigation is consistent across platforms; Weaknesses - The web page does not adjust to the size of my browser window when making it larger. At some point, the page just stops expanding. Strengths: the interface is standardized and will help students navigate. Weaknesses: faculty have limitations that are problematic in the ability to organize and customize materials. It can do a lot. Gradebook is unacceptable as far as I'm concerned.
4.1 How would you rate the overall usability of Canvas? Please use the 1-5 point scale below. # Answer % Count 1 5 Points: Exceeds usability expectations 33.33% Points: Meets usability expectations 44.44% Points: Generally meets usability expectations with minor to moderate areas of poor usability 22.22% Points: Partially meets usability expectations with significant areas of poor usability 0.00% Point: Does not meet usability expectations 0.00% 0 6 N/A: Choosing not to evaluate 0.00% 0 Total 100% 9

4.2 Why did Canvas receive this Usability score? There has been reported issues with importing certain types of content from BB into Canvas Access to community generated plugins via LTI and contents are great for integrating content and services from other Canvas users and third party service providers " Less options than D2L (but the ease of the current options superseded this concern for me). Will be easy to adopt for new users and for those building new courses who've been using Blackboard. Failed importing courses from Blackboard. It was due to the storage limit of the account. After removing a few big files, the importing worked. Strengths: the interface is standardized and will help students navigate. Weaknesses: faculty have limitations that are problematic in the ability to organize and customize materials. It can do a lot. Gradebook is unacceptable as far as I'm concerned.
4.3 Key Canvas Usability Strengths & Weaknesses: Common tasks are easier to perform Sometimes the pages can be busy and overwhelming for users "The checklist for newly created courses is very helpful to new users; There is a lot going on. I like that there are "less clicks" to access content, but that also means the amount of content on the mainpage is a bit overwhelming. An important part of usability is familiarity, so a sideways strength of Canvas may be that all community colleges in California have adopted it so our increasing number of junior transfers would experience a seamless transition when they come to Sac State. Strengths Navigation is very intuitive and straight-forward. The Canvas Guide is excellent. HTML is powerful and provides for innovation and superior experience; Weaknesses - Content uploads are not supported so well as in Brightspace. Strengths: the interface is appealing and easy to navigate. Weaknesses: the ease of usability comes at the cost of flexibility and customizability. I worry that this will limit the growth of faculty use within the LMS. It is pretty intuitive to use. Couldn't drag and drop to add files or images.
Any other comments about Brightspace, Canvas, or the evaluation overall? Trainers helping me adapt my course found it easier to teach me the LMS skills I needed to manage my course with Canvas. On a personal note, the way it is organized is going to force me to completely restructure the way my course content is organized on the LMS...but I also have the sense that once I am past the growing pains it will make my "LMS-life" easier. I also think that given our transfer population, the fact that Los Rios and Sierra are now using Canvas is not a trivial factor. Also on a personal note, I love that I can answer discussion board questions via . Canvas' popularity is a powerful attribute of my perspective and hence on my ratings. We should also consider under-represented students needs. Some of them don t have smart phones, laptops and internet connection at home. Do we have enough resources to support what they re required to perform in class once we begin using the new LMS? I would prefer Brightspace to Canvas. I have a feeling we'll be picking Canvas but for me, transitioning to D2L would be a lot less work. If I could pick, I'd pick this one.
