Skill Area 323: Design and Develop Website Multimedia and Web Design (MWD)
323.3 Create a Web page using tables and frames (7 hrs) Insert and modify tables on a Web page Merge and split cell according to purpose Change attributes of a table Use frames and tables as design elements of a web site
Tables in HTML Tables is a great way to control the layout of a web page. Tables typically consist of one or more rows and one or more columns. Each rectangular area at the intersection of a row and a column is called a cell. Cells contain the page's text or graphics.
Tables in HTML (cont) You can insert a table anywhere on a page even within another table. These are called nested tables. Tables can be used to organize calendars, schedules, statistics or other types of information. Table contents may contain different kinds of information including numbers, text elements or images or multimedia objects
HTML tags to creating table <html> <head> <title>tables</title> </head> <body> <table> <tr> </tr> <th>menu items</th> <th>calories</th> <th>fat (g)</th>
HTML tags to creating table (cont) <tr> <td>chicken noodle soup</td> <td>120</td> <td>2</td> </tr> <tr> <td>caesar salad</td> <td>400</td> <td>26</td> </tr> </table> </body> </html>
Table Final Result
HTML Tables and the Border Attribute If you do not specify a border attribute, the table will be displayed without borders. Sometimes this can be useful, but most of the time, we want the borders to show. To display a table with borders, specify the border attribute: <table border="1"> <tr> <td>row 1, cell 1</td> <td>row 1, cell 2</td> </tr> </table>
HTML Table Tags Tag <table> <th> <tr> <td> <caption> <colgroup> <col /> <thead> <tbody> <tfoot> Description Defines a table Defines a table header Defines a table row Defines a table cell Defines a table caption Defines a group of columns in a table, for formatting Defines attribute values for one or more columns in a table Groups the header content in a table Groups the body content in a table Groups the footer content in a table

Do It Yourself! (DIY) Figure out how to achieve this final Table formatting result. Final Result:
Frames in HTML Frames is the use of multiple, independently controllable sections on a web presentation. You can display more than one HTML document in the same browser window with frames. Frames allow you to divide a page into parts and display certain information, such as a navigation bar or a table of contents. Each HTML document is called a frame, and each frame is independent of the others.
Frames in HTML (cont) The <frame> tag defines one particular window (frame) within a frameset. The first column is set to 25% of the width of the browser window. The second column is set to 75% of the width of the browser window. The document "frame_a.htm" is put into the first column, and the document "frame_b.htm" is put into the second column: <frameset cols="25%,75%"> <frame src="frame_a.htm" /> <frame src="frame_b.htm" /> </frameset>
Frames in HTML (cont) Note: The frameset column size can also be set in pixels (cols="200,500"), and one of the columns can be set to use the remaining space, with an asterisk (cols="25%,*").
Disadvantages of using frames Frames are not expected to be supported in future versions of HTML Frames are difficult to use. (Printing the entire page is difficult). The web developer must keep track of more HTML documents
HTML Frame Tags Tag <frameset> <frame /> Description Defines a set of frames Defines a sub window (a frame) <noframes> Defines a no frame section for browsers that do not handle frames
