INTRODUCTION & IMPLEMENTATION OF ASP.NET CONTENTS I. Introduction to ASP.NET 1. Difference between ASP and ASP.NET 2. Introduction to IIS 3. What is Web Application? Why is it used? II. Implementation of ASP.NET 1. ASP.NET IDE 2. Creation of Web Forms 3. Using Web Form Controls
I. Introduction to ASP.NET 1. Differentiate between ASP and ASP.NET (Question: Differentiate between ASP and ASP.NET. = 4 Marks) 1. ASP is mostly written using VB Script and HTML intermixed. 2. ASP has maximum of 4 built in classes like Request, Response, Session and Application whereas ASP.NET using.net framework classes which has more than 2000 in built classes. 3. ASP does not have any server based components whereas ASP.NET offers several server based components like Button, Text Box etc. and event driven processing can be done at server. 4. ASP doesn't support Page level transactions whereas ASP.NET supports Page level transactions. 5. ASP.NET offers web development for mobile devices which alters the content type (wml or chtml etc.) based on the device. 6. ASP.NET allows separation of business and presentation logic because the code need not be included directly in the.aspx page. 7. ASP.NET uses languages which are fully object oriented programming like C# and also supports cross language support. 8. ASP.NET offers support for web services and rich data structures like DataSet which allows disconnected data processing. OR Features ASP ASP>NET Compiled Environment NO YES Based on the.net NO YES Framework ADO and ADO.NET Only ADO Both Support Server Control Limited Maximum server Control Event Driven Not Available Available Programming Code Seperation NO YES User Input Validation NO YES Security Depends on developer Two types Windows based and Web based OR
ASP 1. ASP has limited oops support and no built in support for xml. 2. ASP has two languages for scripting, like VB script and Jscript/ javascript. 3. ASP is not structured. ASP has mixed html and server side scripting. 4. Error handling system is very poor in ASP. 5. In ASP places all directives on the first line of a page within the same delimiting block. For example: 6. <%LANGUAGE="VBSCRIPT" CODEPAGE="932"%> 7. In classic ASP if you want to update any code then need to often stop and restart the server. 8. ASP is not having inbuilt facility for validation of controls. ASP.NET 1. ASP.NET is object oriented programming. 2. ASP.NET has full xml support for easy data exchange. 3. Different types of tools and compilers are available and for development visual studio is used. 4. ASP.NET We can use C# or VB.NET as server side 5. Error handling is very good. 6. In ASP.NET, you are now required to place the Language directive with a Page directive, as follows: i. <%@Page Language="VB" CodePage="932"%> ii. <%@QutputCache Duration="60" VaryByParam="none" %> 7. Inbuilt validations controls are provided in ASP.NET. which are easy to implement 8. Validations controls are managed the validations if client side javascript disable. 2. Introduction to IIS 1. IIS is a protocol server. 2. It is implemented as a set of several system services that use the most common Internet protocols including HTTP, FTP, NTTP and SMTP. 3. The Microsoft IIS is built into the Microsoft Windows NT Server operating system 4. The IIS was designed with a purpose to deliver high speed and secure information publishing, while also serving as a platform for developers and independent software vendors to extend the Internet s standard communication capabilities.
3. What is Web Application? Why is it used? (Question: What is web application and why is it used? Web application - 2 Marks, Uses 2 Marks = 4 Marks) (Question: List the uses and advantages of Web application. Uses 2 Marks, Advantages 2 Marks = 4 Marks) 1. A web application is an application that is accessed by users over a network such as the Internet or an intranet. 2. A Web application (Web app) is an application program that is stored on a remote server and delivered over the Internet through a browser interface. 3. Web application commonly uses a combination of server side script and client side script to develop the application. The client side is to develop the presentation of the information while server side script deals with the storing and retrieving information. Uses 1. Web applications do not require any complex procedure to deploy in large organizations. 2. A compatible web browser is sufficient. 3. Browser applications typically require little or no disk space on the client. 4. They require no upgrade procedure since all new features are implemented on the server and automatically delivered to the users. 5. Web applications integrate easily into other server-side web procedures, such as and searching. 6. Web Applications run through a web browser like IE, Mozilla which are familiar to the users. Some of the Advantages of Web Pages are: 1. No special configuration is required. 2. Less effort is required to tell about the products and sell them. 3. Data is centrally stored and is secure and easy to backup. 4. Updates are quick and easy. 5. Users are familiar with browser which is used in web applications. 6. People located at different places can have direct access for current information. II. Implementation of ASP.NET 1. ASP.NET IDE 1. ASP.NET, the platform services that allow to program Web Applications and Web Services in any.net language 2. ASP.NET Uses.NET languages to generate HTML pages. HTML page is targeted to the capabilities of the requesting Browser 3. ASP.NET Program is compiled into a.net class and cached the first time it is called. All subsequent calls use the cached version. 4. The Figure 1 shows to create Asp.NET application to be created.
Figure 1 5. Namespaces used in Asp.NET are listed in Table 1 (Question: Explain the namespaces used in ASP.NET = 4 Marks) System Defines fundamental data types eg system.string System.Collections System.IO Definitions and classes for creating various collections File reading & writing operations System.Web System.Web.UI System.Web.UI.webcontrols Support browser/server communication Creates the Page object whenever an.aspx page is requested Classes and definitions to create server controls Table 1
2. Creation of Web Forms (Question: Give the purpose of creating web forms. = 4 Marks) 1. Web Forms are the heart and soul of ASP.NET. 2. Web Forms are the User Interface (UI) elements that give your Web applications their look and feel. 3. Web Forms are similar to Windows Forms in that they provide properties, methods, and events for the controls that are placed onto them. Figure 2: Web Forms in ASP.NET Purpose of Web Forms 1. Web Forms and ASP.NET were created to overcome some of the limitations of ASP. 2. Separation of HTML interface from application logic 3. A rich set of server-side controls that can detect the browser and send out appropriate markup language such as HTML 4. Less code to write due to the data binding capabilities of the new server-side.net controls. 5. Event-based programming model that is familiar to Microsoft Visual Basic programmers. 6. Compiled code and support for multiple languages, as opposed to ASP which was interpreted as Microsoft Visual Basic Scripting (VBScript) or Microsoft Jscript 7. Allows third parties to create controls that provide additional functionality
3. Using Web Form Controls (Question: Explain the any eight web form controls. 1 mark each =8 Marks) 1. Web Form controls are created and run on the Server just like the HTML controls. 2. After performing whatever operation they are designed to do, they render the appropriate HTML and send that HTML into the output stream. 3. This base class implements a set of common properties that all of these controls will have. Some of these common properties are: i. BackColor ii. Enabled iii. Font iv. ForeColor v. Modifiers vi. TabIndex vii. Visible viii. Width 4. There are a few different categories of controls that are supplied by the Microsoft.NET Framework. 5. Some controls have an almost one-to-one correspondence with their HTML counterparts. Some controls provide additional information when posted back to the server, and some controls allow you to display data in tabular or list-type format. Table 2 shows a list of Web Form server-side controls and the serverside events that you can respond to with each control. Table 2: Server-side controls used in ASP.NET and Web Forms Control Description Web Form Code Example Label TextBox Button Displays text on the HTML page Gives the user an input area on an HTML form A normal button control used to respond to click events on the server. <asp:label id=label1 runat="server">label</asp:label> <asp:textbox id=textbox1 runat="server"></asp:textbox> <asp:button id=button1 runat="server" Text="Button"></asp:Button>
LinkButton ImageButton Hyperlink DropDownList ListBox DataGrid DataList Repeater Like a button in that it posts back to a server, but the button looks like a hyperlink Can display a graphical image, A normal hyperlink control that responds to a click event A normal dropdown list control like the HTML control, but can be data bound to a data source A normal ListBox control like the HTML control, but can be data bound to a data source Like a <TABLE> on steroids. You bind a data source to this control and it displays all of the column information. Allows you to create a non-tabular type of format for data. Allows you to create a non-tabular type <asp:linkbutton id=linkbutton1 runat="server">linkbutton</asp:linkbutton > <asp:imagebutton id=imagebutton1 runat="server"></asp:imagebutton> <asp:hyperlink id=hyperlink1 runat="server">hyperlink <asp:dropdownlist id=dropdownlist1 runat="server"></asp:dropdownlist> <asp:listbox id=listbox1 runat="server"></asp:listbox> <asp:datagrid id=datagrid1 runat="server"></asp:datagrid> <asp:datalist id=datalist1 runat="server"></asp:datalist> <asp:repeater id=repeater1 runat="server"></asp:repeater>
of format for data. CheckBox CheckBoxList RadioButton RadioButtonList Image Panel Very similar to the normal HTML control that displays a check box for the user to check or uncheck Displays a group of check boxes that all work together Very similar to the normal HTML control that displays a button for the user to check or uncheck Displays a group of radio button controls that all work together Very similar to the normal HTML control that displays an image within the page Used to group other controls <asp:checkbox id=checkbox1 runat="server"></asp:checkbox> <asp:checkboxlist id=checkboxlist1 runat="server"></asp:checkboxlist> <asp:radiobutton id=radiobutton1 runat="server"></asp:radiobutton> <asp:radiobuttonlist id=radiobuttonlist1 runat="server"></asp:radiobuttonlist> <asp:image id=image1 runat="server"></asp:image> <asp:panel id=panel1 runat="server">panel</asp:panel> PlaceHolder Acts as a location where you can dynamically add other server-side controls at run time <asp:placeholder id="placeholder1" runat="server"></asp:placeholder>
Calendar Creates an HTML version of a calendar.. <asp:calendar id=calendar1 runat="server"></asp:calendar> AdRotator Table XML Allows you to specify a list of ads to display. Each time the user re-displays the page, the display rotates through the series of ads. Very similar to the normal HTML control Used to display XML documents within the HTML, It can also be used to perform an XSLT transform prior to displaying the XML. <asp:adrotator id=adrotator1 runat="server"></asp:adrotator> <asp:table id=table1 runat="server"></asp:table> <asp:xml id="xml1" runat="server"></asp:xml>
