1 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM This tutorial explains how to add links, files, zipped files, pages, and MOODLE Media. ADDING LINKS 1. Let s start with adding a link. Here is a link to a practice Prezi. Highlight it, and copy it (CTRL+C or right click + copy) Next, go to your MOODLE site, and make sure you have turned editing ON. Then, choose the Topic or lesson wherein you wish to add a link. Toward the right side of that row, you will see the "Add an activity or resource" option. Click the button, and then choose "URL" and click theadd button. You will see several boxes to fill in--general, Content, Options, Parameters, and Common Module Settings. Let's start with General. 3. General Options for Links Every time you add content, you will be given this general box to fill in, and both aspects (name and description) are mandatory. You want to give a descriptive name to the object you are adding. Also, you want to provide a description that helps the student to understand what it is for. Some instructors give little thought to how they label items in a learning module. You want your items in a learning module to be named as well as you would wish textbook titles and chapters reflected their content.

2 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM 4. The next box is "Content." Click into the text box and paste (CTRL+V or right click + paste) the link you copied into the box. You probably don't have a link stored in your repository, so if you click on the "Choose a Link" box, you will not see any options for you to choose. 5. The next box is Display. You can choose Automatic, Embed, Open, or In pop-up. Automatic Makes the link open in the same window. Embed Open In pop-up Opens the link in the MOODLE site (so you don't have to wonder how to get back to it, as you won't leave). When this tutorial was being created, the embed command did not work. Makes the link open in the same window (same as automatic). Opens the link in a pop-up window, which allows the viewer to stay in MOODLE and view the link. In pop-up seems to be the best option. If you choose In pop-up, you can review the advanced options (click on the "Show Advanced" button on the right hand side of the Options box). You can choose the size of the pop up box and whether or not you want the URL name to display. Don't worry about the parameters box at this time. Under Common Module Settings, you can choose to Show or Hide the link. You can also

3 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM AddingContentMoodlehandout change your mind later. 6. When you are finished, click on "Save and return to course." 7. When you return to your course, you will see that the link you added has been added to the bottom of the module you were working in. 8. You should also notice that you have six icons next to your new link. Let's look at each one.

4 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM Move Right Move right will indent items. Move Move will move items up and down in the Update Update allows you to edit the file name, description, and settings of an item. Delete Delete allows you to delete an item

5 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM Hide Click the eye to hide items. Assign roles Assign roles allows you to assign roles to users in relation to assignments for example, allows teaching assistants to access some assignment but nor other. You rarely need to assign roles. Duplicate Edit Title Click duplicate to duplicate items Click here to change the names of items.

6 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM ADDING FILES 1. Most of what you add to Moodle you will add using the "Add an activity or resource" and "File" combination. Files can be pdfs or Word documents (recommend, though, that you convert Word docments to pdfs). They can also be PowerPoints (again, recommend that you convert PowerPoints to pdfs). Files can even be zipped files. If you have many files in one folder, such as a website or Flash video, you can zip the file, upload it under "File," and then unzip and set it up in MOODLE. That's a great timesaver! 2. To start using the File function, let's upload a pdf. Make sure your editing function is turned on, and choose "Add a resource" at the bottom of the module where you wish to add the file. 3. You will see that you are taken to a series of boxes that are very familiar from the add URL activity. One of MOODLE's strengths is that it is consistent. Again, type in a descriptive name and a short description for students. The description should tell students what it is, and what it is for, and maybe even what to do with it.

7 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM 4. You can add a picture to your description, or a video or audio file. Let's add a picture. Click on the Insert/edit image button. 5. You will be prompted to find or upload an image.

8 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM 6. You will be directed to the aptly named "File picker." Probably your files are on your desktop or in one of your file folders. Files you have already uploaded are available in Server Files. To upload from your computer, click on "Upload a file." Then choose "Browse." 7. You will be taken to your computer, and you can choose an image to upload.

9 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM 8. Click on the image, and then choose "Open." You will be prompted to add alternate text to any images you use in your online course. This text should descibe the image for students. The purpose of this alternate text is to allow blind students who have electronic text readers (that is, the majority of your visually impaired students) to navigate your web pages. Therefore, don't skip this step. It is crucial to the ability of visually impaired students to take your class, and it is crucial to your ADA compliance. 9. Click "OK," and you will see your image uploaded.

10 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM 10. It if doesn't quite look right, click on the "Appearance" tab at the top. 11. Here you can edit the image's appearance. Click on the arrow by the Alignment tab to choose baseline, top, middle, and other alignment options for your image. If your image is too big, you can decrease the dimensions. If it is too small, you can increase the dimensions. You can also put in vertical space, horizontal space, or a border. The styles line simply describes what you have done. For example, if the image of the dog was adjusted as the example below describes,

11 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM then it will look like this in your description box:

12 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM 12. Let's add the file and then look at our finished product. 13. Move to the Content box, and click on Add Again, you will be taken to your file picker. Make sure you have chosen "Upload a file." Then choose "Browse" and find your practice pdf to upload.

13 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM 14. Once the file is loaded, choose "Upload this file."

14 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM 15. You will then see your file in the content folder. 16. Under Options, you have similar options as you had in adding the URL: 17. With Automatic and Embed, the file will display immediately in the MOODLE frame. The description (if you choose to allow the description to be shown) will appear underneath. The file will be printable and saveable for students. With Force download, students will get a box asking them whether they want the pdf to open or to save on their computer. Open will open the pdf in the browser window (and eliminate MOODLE). It also will not display the description, even if you indicate that you wish it to display the description. In pop-up puts the document in a pop-up. You can choose the size. It will not display the description, even if you indicate that you wish it to. Embed seems to be the best choice to make for the majority of documents. Of course, the best choice will depend on the type of document and how you intent to use it in class.

15 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM 18. When you are finished, choose "Save and return to course." 19. Voila! You have placed your practice pdf.

16 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM ADDING ZIPPED FILES To add a website or a Flash video, you will need to zip the folder full of files and add the zipped file using the same procedure we followed for adding single files. For example, if you have a website that you have created and you wish to upload it to MOODLE to function as a website inside of MOODLE, you would first compress it or zip it. Then, you would upload it as a file. 2. Now that you're ready to load your content onto MOODLE, you need to find it. In this next example, the content you are looking for is a test file that we created. In this example, the file is called test, and it is located on the desktop. 2. When you open the test folder, you will see several files, as shown below in Figure MDL.2a. Close the file--that is, go back to the outside of the file as featured in Figure MDL.2a. Compress the file by right clicking on it, and then choosing "Send to" and "Compressed (zipped) folder (see MDL.2b). You will then see a folder with a zipper through the middle and the extension of.zip.

17 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM Figure MDL 2b: A view of the folder after a right click 3. On MOODLE, in the module where you wish to add the video, choose "Add an activity or resource," and then select "File.". Figure MDL.3 below shows the location of the Add an activity or resource and File buttons. After you have selected file click "Add" Figure MDL.3: A view of the Moodle screens, with emphasis on the Add activity and resource and File button.

TIP: Sometimes students do not realize that the presentation contains audio and video. It may be helpful to write in the description field, post on the announcements page, or in an introducing the new course content a message such as, "This file contains audio and video, and you must access both. Neither the audio nor the video are optional. If you choose to view this lecture in a campus lab, remember to bring headphones." You may also wish to let students know when the content will become unavailable (if it will), and if there are any assessments associated with the content. 5. In the Content pane, beside Select files, choose Add. Depending on your web browser you may also have the ability to drag and drop the desired files into this box. If you are going to upload a series of files you may want to click create folder to keep your files more organized. (See Figure MDL.5, below).

19 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM Figure MDL.5: A view of the content box and file picker where you can upload your files. 6. After clicking "upload a file" from the file picker menu, click the button to attach your file. This will open a computer library dialog. (See Figure MDL.6) Locate your zipped folder called Test. Select in your computer library window and click open Name your attachment in the Save As field. Depending on the content you are uploading select the most appropriate selection in the "Choose License" drop down menu. When you are finished click upload file (See Figure MDL.5). MDL Figure.6: A view of the computer library where your zipped folder is located..

20 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM 7. You will now see an icon in the content field representing your uploaded file. Click the folder to open the extended options dialog box where you can unzip your folder.. Figure MDL.7:A view of the uploaded file and the extended options box.

21 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM 8. Next, do a little housekeeping. Now that we have unzipped our folder, we no longer need the zip file. Click the zip file and select delete (see Figure MDL.8). Figure MDL.8: A view of both the zipped and unzipped folder. Click the unzipped to delete it. 9. Next, open the unzipped folder (indicated by a blue folder icon) by clicking on it (see Figure MDL8.b). You will then see the files inside.

Find the html file with the same name as the video file that we created previously and player added to the name. Click on the file and choose "Set Main File" (see Figure MDL.10). This action tells the computer to "pull" the content from the html file, so that students will get the video "look" that tells them "this is a video." (see Figure MDL.9). Figure: MDL.9: Select the html file with the video name followed by player.

23 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM Figure: MDL.10: Set as main file so students can go straight important content 11. Finally, in the Options pane, indicate that you wish to Display the video in a pop up (See MDL. 11) (this option is best for Flash videos). Choose Save, and return to the course. Figure MDL.11: View of the finished file box. Select pop out for flash videos. Then click save and return

24 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM ADDING A PAGE 1. What if you want to type right into MOODLE? Maybe add text, audio, video, images, the whole works into one file in MOODLE? You can do it using the Page option. Again, go to Add a resource and choose "Add Page."

25 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM 3. Again, fill in the descriptive name and the detailed description. Note that now you have a Content box. Here is where the important stuff will go. 3. Simply click in the Content and start typing. When you think about using the MOODLE page tool, there are some points to consider. The MOODLE page tool is great for a YouTube video assignment with discussion questions, or an audio lecture, or a short lecture that includes text and a few links and pictures. It is not great for extended course content/lectures/assignments with videos, text, questions, audio, images, etc. Why not? Well, it is created in MOODLE, and as such, if you ever want to use it in another learning management system, you are out of luck. For larger projects that you create, use tools outside of MOODLE such as MS Word, MS PowerPoint, Prezi, or SeaMonkey. With these tools, your work is portable. 4. But what about a short audio lecture with some questions? We can do that easily in the MOODLE page tool. Why not just upload an audio lecture as a file and skip all this page nonsense? You can certainly do that, but you usually want to give students some context surrounding the course content you present, especially in an online course. Let's say you have an audio recording from an expert in your field, and you want students to listen to it and then send you a short essay addressing four important questions that the audio recording should have prompted them to consider.

26 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM 5. So, first, let's add the name and description and set up the content: 6. Once you have finished typing in the introduction to your audio lecture, you want to add the audio lecture. We do this with MOODLE media. It is the film strip looking icon in the middle of the third row on your page content icons.

27 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM AddingContentMoodlehandout 7. When you click on the MOODLE media icon, you are prompted to "Find or upload a sound, video, or applet...." Click on that bar. 8. You will then be prompted to find your desired audio file (whenever possible use mp3s) and upload it.

28 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM 9. Note that this is also the way you would upload an.mov file. Choose "Upload this File," and then you will see the audio bar in the MOODLE media window. Choose Insert. 10. You will now see a link to the audio file in your page. Click return to type your questions for the students and explain how they should submit their responses.

29 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM 11. Under page options, you may or may not choose to display the page description: 12. Take a look and see how your page looks. There is a downside--the audio or video will download to the student computer, which means the student will have a copy automatically. For guest lecturers, you may wish to clear that fact with them before you post their audio lectures.

30 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM ADDING MOODLE MEDIA 1. There is a workaround that will keep audio files on MOODLE. Go to add an activity or resource, and add file. 2. And upload the audio file in this way. Note that you would put all the information that you put on the page in the Description, and you want to make sure you have set the description to display.

31 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM 3. Next, upload the audio file:

32 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM 4. Under options choose embed. You may have to choose "Show Advanced Options" to indicate that you wish the resource description to display.

33 of 24 5/6/2011 2:14 PM 5. It will look like this: 6. It's not quite as nice, but it does prevent the audio--or video--from downloading. You can also upload.mov files in this way. Created by Tammy Powell, May 2011 Updated by Kali Alford, June 2015
