1 An IBM Midrange User Group Status Newsletter September, 2004 LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Members, I hope your summers were as enjoyable and productive as ours has been. We, the STATUS Board Members, have been busy at work setting up some really great events for this next season. In a previous communication I shared with you our idea of setting up educational days to help our members keep abreast of the new IBM developments. At that time I also promised forth coming information. Well we are really excited about this opportunity. The STATUS Board Members have been working with AS/CC (Advanced Systems/Computer Consultants), one of our local firms, to provide affordable education opportunities. While we have not finalized all the particulars I can share with you that we estimate the cost will be between 100 and 150 per person per class. We feel a real bargain. We are still working with AS/CC to get dates for the classes. I hope to have these finalized shortly after our next board meeting. We are all excited about this great opportunity for all of us. Start making your lists for which class you are interested in and who will benefit the most by attending. I am looking forward to seeing you at out first dinner meeting to discuss this great opportunity. In case you don t recall the list of classes mentioned in our Summer News we are including that listing in this newsletter also. In addition to the listed classes, we are also working on a session for Data Modeling. Possibly a three session class presented by a member from one of our local businesses to be announced as soon as all arrangements are final. As you can see we have been busy and we are still working to bring the best, most affordable education opportunities to you, our members. I am excited about this year and I hope that you are too. Some great opportunities to help all of us make the transition to the new generation of computing. Working together we can make a better tomorrow for all concerned. 2 From Programs Chair: Linda Scheiber Status Meeting: September 14, 2004 Joel Neidermann is a Senior e-server Sales Specialist with IBM Corporation. He is based in Indianapolis and has Sales and Marketing responsibility for IBM e-servers for the State of Indiana. Joe started with IBM in 1995 and has four years previous industry experience prior to joining IBM. He has a B.S. in Marketing from Northern Illinois University. September s Topic i5 servers with Power5 technology and i5/os V5R3. Joel will be speaking with us about the IBM i5 servers. These are now fueled with Power5 microprocessors and IBM Virtualization Engine technology. These are the next generation in the iseries family of servers. Let s listen to Joel and he explains how this new technology with the i5 servers will serve to: Enhance Productivity Seamlessly Upgrade Processing Power Reduce Complexity The eserver i5 servers provide outstanding value for mid-sized companies deploying applications on diverse operating systems. These servers provide tremendous operating system flexibility including i5/os, AIX5L, Linux and Windows (via the Integrated xseries Adapter or Integrated xseries Server). Our businesses can now choose the right application with less restriction on operating system choice as the business grows and our application needs evolve. Other new capabilities offered with V5R3 RPG SQL Precompiler now supports more of the latest RPG programming techniques with SQL. The enhancements will make the RPG/SQL bridge a lot easier to cross than it has been in the past. Enhancements to SQL Sequence Object. V5R3 introduces the SQL function Sequence Object, which enables the database to auto-generate keys such as employee IDs and order IDs. Digital Certificates With V5R3, you can now map a digital certificate to an individual, an ability that s important in high-security environments like banks. 4 Educational Opportunities RPG and COBOL Tools: Remote System Explorer in IBM WebSphere Development Studio Client This presentation introduces the new generation tool called Remote System Explorer for a PDM-like experience that offers rich support for exploring the file system, compiling/binding, editing, running and debugging. Labs included. Full Day IBM WebFacing Tool in IBM WebSphere Development Studio Client for iseries This presentation reviews the components of a Web application, the WebFacing Tool and how it is packaged, how the WebFacing Tool development time and runtime works and the steps to Web-enable a 5250 application using the WebFacing Tool. IBM WebFacing Tool: Advanced in IBM WebSphere Development Studio Client This presentation reviews the Advanced features of the IBM WebFacing Tool in Version 5.0 Full Day Combined. Web Tools in IBM WebSphere Development Studio Client V5.1 This presentation introduces Web basics that include dynamic HTML, e-business and Web applications. With knowledge of Web basics in place the tools for developing Web applications including iseries specific Web tool extensions are reviewed. The tools covered include Web tools, Struts tools, Application Server tools, Web services tools and XML tools. Labs Included. Full Day. Web Tools: Beyond the Basics in IBM WebSphere Development Studio Client for iseries This presentation covers the more common Web technologies in greater detail and provides you with a foundation to explore the others. e-business for iseries Programmers This presentation introduces you to creating an e-business application on an iseries machine.; It will give you an overview of the structure of an e-business application and will walk you through the steps in creating one. Full Day Building an e-business application with RPG iseries Web development tools give you the ability to create new e-business applications that use a Webbased front end to communicate with the business logic in an ILE or non-ile language program residing on an iseries server. In this session, the user will learn to create the high-level design of your Web site and apply page templates using Web site designer. Then, you will create the individual pages with Page Designer, or generate input and output JSP files with the Web Interaction wizard. You will also add iseries Web components to your pages, for example, Web equivalents of iseries command keys, input fields that accept only particular types of data, or output fields such as subfile names. You will learn how to use Page Designer to create a new customer list input page from a subfile. You will then learn how to link this new page to the customer inquiry page that you built in the previous session. Then you will learn how to create new output pages (update record and update complete) using the Web Interaction wizard. You will also learn how to link these pages using the Web interaction wizard. Finally you will learn how to test your new and updated input and output pages in your existing e-business RPG customer inquiry application.
