Sharon Brown The Learning Object Metadata (LOM) component is perhaps the simplest part of the SCORM specification to understand conceptually. As virtually every article about metadata will tell you, the term is defined as data about data. Within a SCORM content package, metadata is used to store key information about a learning resource using a standardized format. You can think of a metadata record as analogous to an entry in a library card catalog. Unfortunately, although SCORM metadata is a simple concept, it is not so simple to apply. The information required is extensive and is not always clearly-defined. Because someone who is familiar with the content of the resource must provide the information, metadata creation cannot be automated to the same extent as content packaging and communication with the LMS. collects the required information and turns it into a properly-structured XML document. However, you are responsible for providing accurate, appropriate, and complete information for at least the fields that are required by the specification. Requirements To complete this tutorial you will need to install the following software and files: The SCORM 1.2 Metadata Requirements The SCORM 1.2 specification defines metadata for all elements of the SCORM Content Hierarchy content aggregations, SCOs, and assets. These hierarchy elements are explained in detail in the first article of this series, Creating E-Learning Content in Authorware 7 for SCORM 1.2- Compliant LMSs and LCMSs. Actually, the SCORM 1.2 specification does not require metadata at all. A content package that does not contain metadata can pass the SCORM 1.2 certification test. It can also be imported by and communicate with any SCORM 1.2-conformant LMS. However, there are several good reasons to include metadata in your learning content packages, at least for content aggregations and SCOs. Some types of information that are typically imported by LMSs appear only in the metadata. The most obvious of these are the descriptions of courses and lessons intended for learners. Metadata includes information you would most likely record anyway. It makes sense to record it in a standardized format.

Future versions of the SCORM will almost certainly require metadata for some levels of the content hierarchy. If you do not create metadata records initially, you may find yourself having to do so later, when the necessary information is less readily at hand. Assets are a different matter. As you can imagine, an extensive content package may contain hundreds of asset files, and providing metadata for all of them would be impractical. You may want to forego asset-level metadata entirely. On the other hand, you may decide that some assets have enough potential for reuse to be worth the trouble. Metadata Categories SCORM metadata is organized into nine broad categories, some of which are optional for one or more types of resources. General information about the resource or content aggregation as a whole Lifecycle history and current state of the resource and those who have contributed to its development (optional for assets) Meta-Metadata specific information about the metadata record itself, as opposed to the resource described by the metadata Technical technical requirements and characteristics of the resource Educational key educational or pedagogical characteristics of the resource (optional for all resource types) Rights intellectual property rights and conditions for use Relation relationship between the resource and other resources (optional for all resource types) Annotation comments on the educational use of the resource, generally by parties other than the original author (optional for all resource types) Classification where the resource is placed in relation to a specific taxonomy or classification scheme (optional for assets) The remainder of this article focuses on the required categories and the required elements within them. Application Profiles As you might guess, there are differences between the metadata requirements for the different levels in the content hierarchy. The SCORM specification addresses these differences by providing an application profile for each type of resource. The application profiles, which appear in a table on pages of the specification document, indicate which metadata elements are required for a given resource type. It may seem somewhat surprising that the application profiles for content aggregations and SCOs are identical. The following outline lists the categories and elements that are required for these resources. These

items are explained in full in the Creating Metadata for a Sample SCO section. The requirements for assets are a subset of those listed here. 1. General 1. Title 2. Catalog Entry Catalog Entry 3. Description 4. Keyword 2. Lifecycle 1. Version 2. Status 3. Meta-Metadata 1. Metadata Scheme 4. Technical 1. Format 2. Location 5. Rights 1. Cost 2. Copyright and Other Restrictions 6. Classification 1. Purpose 2. Description 3. Keyword Creating Metadata for a Sample SCO Let's create the metadata for a SCO named Using the Authorware 7 Metadata Editor. The mechanics of using the Metadata Editor are quite straightforward. 1. Launch the command by selecting LMS > Authorware Learning Object Metadata Editor from the Commands menu. If the corresponding Authorware file is open, the Metadata Editor will automatically fill in some fields based on file data. As shown in Figure 1 below, the editor screen consists of a series of tabbed panels that correspond to the major categories of SCORM metadata.

Figure 1: Metadata Editor sample default screen The section of the screen highlighted by the blue box contains some key information: o o o Page 1 of 2: Some tabs have more than one page. Ensure that you click the green arrow to access additional pages as required. Edit language: Unspecified: The Edit Language feature addresses the SCORM option of providing metadata in multiple languages. I will not cover specifying languages in this tutorial. *Required fields: The red asterisks indicate mandatory fields for content aggregation and SCO metadata. In our discussion of individual fields, I will indicate those that are also required for assets. 2. Click each tab in turn and enter the appropriate information in the fields. If you hold the cursor over an input field, a tool-tip will provide a brief explanation of the data to be entered. 3. Select File > Save to write the metadata XML file. The metadata file will be given the same filename as the open Authorware file, if available, but with an.xml extension. 4. Use Save as if you want to use a different filename. The more difficult part of using the Metadata Editor is determining the appropriate information to enter. The remaining sections of this walkthrough are devoted to explaining the pages and the individual fields that are required for basic SCORM 1.2 conformance. For each page there is a screenshot with example entries in the required fields. If significant entries are filled in by default from the currently-open Authorware file, a secondary screenshot will display the default screen for comparison. Following each screenshot is a discussion of each required field on the page, if any. A few optional fields are touched on briefly. The following information is provided for all required fields, as appropriate:

Description of the information to be entered Discussion/Best Practices concerning the required information Special directions for entering the required data into the Metadata Editor, if necessary Indication of whether the item is required for assets Name(s) of the associated element(s) in the SCORM 1.2 specification (The field names chosen in the Metadata Editor are easy to understand and do not always match the corresponding element name in the specification.) Page numbers in the SCORM 1.2 specification where the associated element(s) is/are defined General Tab Page 1 Figure 2: The General tab, page 1, with sample entries. Default entries shown in smaller image at top left. The General tab gathers information about the resource or content aggregation as a whole. All fields on this page are required for SCORM 1.2 compliance. Title Description: The name of the resource or aggregation Discussion/Best Practices: The title will typically be included in catalog listings and displayed to students by LMSs. If a title property has been assigned to the current Authorware file, it will be entered here by default. Required for Assets: Yes SCORM Element Name(s): Title Specification page numbers: 2-14, 2-34 Description Description: A description of the content of the resource or aggregation Discussion/Best Practices: The description will typically be included in catalog listings and displayed to students by LMSs. Required for Assets: Yes SCORM Element Name(s): Description Specification page numbers: 2-15, 2-37

Catalog Description: The name(s) of one or more cataloging system(s) that contain(s) an entry for this resource or aggregation Discussion / Best Practices: This field along with the Entry field combine to make up the Catalog Entry subcategory defined in the specification. The Catalog Entry is intended to allow the resource to be located by an external search of known catalogs. In SCORM 1.2 it serves the additional purpose of providing a unique identifier for the resource. A catalog may be an established public listing or one created by your own organization. The Metadata Editor provides a default entry titled Project Catalog. Entering the data: You can edit a catalog name in the text box beside the Entry caption. Press Tab or click in the list box to confirm the change. The + button adds a new catalog entry, and the - button deletes the selected entry. Required for Assets: No SCORM Element Name(s): Catalog Entry: Catalog Specification page numbers: 2-14, 2-35 Entry Description: The actual value (title or other identifier) of the entry within a given catalog Discussion / Best Practices: This field is the second part of the Catalog Entry subcategory discussed above under the Catalog field. Each catalog listed must have a corresponding entry. The default Project Catalog automatically fills in the title of the current Authorware file, if available. Otherwise, it defaults to [Untitled]. When a new catalog is added, its entry defaults to New catalog entry. Entering the data: This field s entries are controlled by the Catalog field. The entry for a given catalog is displayed only when that catalog is selected. You can edit any displayed entry. Required for Assets: No SCORM Element Name(s): Catalog Entry: Entry Specification page numbers: 2-15,

General Tab Page 2 Figure 3: General tab, page 2, with sample entries The second page of the General tab contains only one required entry. Keywords Description: Keywords or phrases (search terms) that describe the resource or aggregation. Discussion / Best Practices: This field should not be used for characteristics that can be specified in other metadata fields (such as the resource s title, author, or catalog entry). You can include as many keywords as you wish, although LMSs and LCMSs are not required to support more than ten. If you wish to include more than ten keywords, place the most important first. Entering the data: Press Enter after each keyword to begin the next on a new line. Required for Assets: No SCORM Element Name(s): Keyword Specification page numbers: 2-15,

Lifecycle Tab Figure 4: Lifecycle tab with sample entries. Default entries shown in smaller image at top left. The Lifecycle tab provides data on the current status of the resource. It also optionally allows you to include data about its author and other contributors. Although contributor data is optional, it is considered a best practice to include an entry for the resource's author. Version Description: The full version number of this resource or aggregation Discussion / Best Practices: The Metadata Editor provides a default version of 1.0. Required for Assets: No SCORM Element Name(s): Version Specification page numbers: 2-16, Status Description: The current state or condition of the resource Discussion / Best Practices: This field has a restricted vocabulary. If you choose to make an entry, you must select one of the categories provided. Required for Assets: No SCORM Element Name(s): Status Specification page numbers: 2-16, 2-42

Role (optional but recommended) Description: A specific role played by a contributor to the resource Discussion / Best Practices: The Role, vcard, and Date fields combine to form the Contribute subcategory defined in the specification. The Metadata Editor enters Author by default, although you can delete it if you do not wish to include contributor information in your metadata. You can also add other contributor roles, but doing so is beyond the scope of this article. Required for Assets: No SCORM Element Name(s): Contribute: Role Specification page numbers: 2-17, 2-38 vcard (optional but recommended) Date Description: An electronic business card for the author or other contributor. If you include an entry in the Role field, you must include a vcard. Discussion / Best Practices: This field works with the Role and Date fields to define a contributor. The Metadata Editor provides an example containing default values, but you must change them to create a meaningful vcard. If you delete the Author entry in the Role field, it deletes the vcard data as well. Entering the data: Change the values as needed, using the default as a template. You can delete lines you don't need, but be sure to keep the BEGIN:vCard and END:vCard lines intact. Note that you have to scroll down to see the END:vCard line in the default template. Required for Assets: No SCORM Element Name(s): Contribute: Centity: vcard Specification page numbers: 2-17, 2-38 Description: The date on which a given contribution was completed Discussion / Best Practices: The Metadata Editor defaults to the current date. You can change it if needed. The field will always contain data, but it will not be used if there are no entries in the Role field. Required for Assets: No SCORM Element Name(s): Contribute: Date: Datetime Specification page numbers: 2-17,

Metametadata Tab Page 1 Figure 5: Metametadata tab, page 1, with sample entries The Metametadata tab collects information about the metadata record itself. Only the first item on this page is required. However, the Metadata Editor places generic default values in the Catalog and Entry fields. Unless you plan to include the metadata in a catalog, delete the default entry by clicking the button. Metadata scheme Description: The specification on which the metadata record is based. Discussion / Best Practices: For basic SCORM 1.2 compliance, the default value provided by the Metadata Editor is sufficient. Required for Assets: yes SCORM Element Name(s): Metadatascheme Specification page numbers: 2-19, 2-53 Metametadata Tab Page 2

Figure 6: Metametadata tab, page 2, with sample entries There are no required entries on the second page of the Metametadata tab. However, like the Lifecycle tab, this page contains default contributor data that must be either edited or deleted. Since you are creating this metadata record, I recommend that you edit the Creator data with your own information. See the Lifecycle Tab section above for directions on using the contributor fields. Technical Tab Page 1 Figure 7: Technical tab, page 1, with sample entries. Default entries shown in smaller image at top left. The Technical tab describes computer-related requirements and characteristics of the resource. Only two fields on this page are required. Format Description: The software needed to access the resource or the resources included in the aggregation Discussion/Best Practices: The format must be expressed as a MIME type or as non-digital. The Metadata Editor defaults to the appropriate MIME type for an Authorware piece. For a straight HTML piece, you would change this to text/html. You should be able to find out the correct MIME type for other types of resources by doing an Internet search or asking your web administrator. The specification allows you to include more than one value here, although the Metadata Editor does not provide this option. Since the resources in an aggregation frequently include multiple types, you may need to open the metadata file and add more Format elements directly to it. Required for Assets: yes SCORM Element Name(s): Format Specification page numbers: 2-19, Location Description: A string used to access the resource or aggregation. Typically it is a URL, but it may also be a text description.

Discussion / Best Practices: You may include more than one location. List the preferred location first. The Metadata Editor defaults to the complete file path on your local machine. You will need to change this if your metadata will be used by others. Entering the data: Type each location on its own line in the entry area. For absolute URLs, be sure to include the If you will be distributing the metadata in a package that also contains the content file(s), you should provide a relative URL (file path) from the metadata file to the content file within that package. For example, if the resource file lesson1.aam, is located in the same folder as the metadata, the relative URL would simply be lesson1.aam. If the lesson files are located in a subfolder called lesson1, the relative URL would be lesson1/lesson1.aam. (Notice that you use a forward slash instead of the backslash used by Windows systems.) In the metadata file, the Location includes a type attribute that specifies whether it is a URI (a general category that includes URLs) or a text description. The Metadata Editor automatically sets this attribute to URI for items beginning with and TEXT for any other item. If you enter a relative URL, you will need to change this attribute directly in the metadata file. Required for Assets: yes SCORM Element Name(s): Location Specification page numbers: 2-20, Technical Tab Page 2 Figure 8: Technical tab, page 2 There are no required entries on this page of the Technical tab. If you wish to specify a required operating system, browser, or movie player, you can click the + button and select the type of requirement from the

pop-up menu. Then enter the name and version information in the other fields Educational Tab Pages 1 and 2 Figure 9: Educational tab, page 1 Figure 10: Educational tab, page 2 The Educational category provides information on the educational or pedagogic characteristics of the resource or aggregation. The entire category is optional for all types of resources and aggregations.

Rights Tab Figure 11: Rights tab with sample entries The Rights category gives details on the intellectual property rights and terms of use for the resource or aggregation. The Comments field is not required, but it is a good idea to use it for the appropriate details if either of the first two fields contains a value of yes. Cost Description: Indicates whether or not a fee is charged for using the resource. The only permitted values are yes and no. Required for Assets: yes SCORM Element Name(s): Cost Specification page numbers: 2-26, Copyright Description: Indicates whether or not the resource is copyrighted or has other restrictions on its use. The only permitted values are yes and no. Required for Assets: yes SCORM Element Name(s): Copyright And Other Restrictions Specification page numbers: 2-26,

Relation Tab Figure 12: Relation tab The Relation category is used to indicate how the resource or aggregation relates to other resources. The category is optional for all types of resources and aggregations. Note: The grayed checkbox Contains 1 or more catalog references is a read-only field that may appear checked if you import an existing metadata file. It refers to the optional Catalog Entry element. The Metadata Editor does not have the capacity to edit or produce catalog entry data, but any such data already in the file will be preserved. Annotation Tab Figure 13: Annotation tab The Annotation category is typically used by someone other than the creator of the metadata. It provides a place for remarks on the

educational use of the resource along with the source of each comment. The category is optional for all types of resources and aggregations. Classification Tab Figure 14: Classification tab with sample entries The Classification category is used to describe how the resource fits into one or more classification systems. Ideally, these would be standard classification systems or taxonomies, but a text description and set of keywords are adequate. At least one classification is required for SCOs and aggregations. However, you can include multiple classifications. The grayed checkbox labeled Contains 1 or more classification taxonomies is a read-only field that may be checked if you import an existing metadata file. It refers to the optional Taxon Path element. The Metadata Editor does not have the capacity to edit or produce taxon path data, but any such data already in the file will be preserved. Purpose Description: The purpose of the classification. Discussion/Best Practices: This field can be a source of confusion. Remember that you are describing the purpose of the classification, not the purpose of the resource itself. The options provided in the Metadata Editor represent the Best Practice vocabulary contained in the SCORM specification. Expanded or alternate vocabularies are legal, but the Metadata Editor does not provide a mechanism to add other purposes. In the actual metadata file, a Classification can have only one Purpose element. If you enter multiple items in the Purpose field, the Metadata Editor will generate a complete Classification section for each purpose.

Entering the data: Select an item from the list. If you want to include more than one classification, use the + button. Required for Assets: No SCORM Element Name(s): Purpose Specification page numbers: 2-28, Description Description: A text description of the resource relative to the selected purpose. Discussion / Best Practices: This field should contain the actual value of the selected purpose. Depending on the given purpose, it might, for example, contain the name of an academic discipline (area of study), a statement of an educational objective, or a list of accessibility restrictions. Entering the data: Be sure the appropriate item is highlighted in the Purpose field before entering the corresponding discipline. Required for Assets: No SCORM Element Name(s): Description Specification page numbers: 2-29, Keywords Description: A list of keywords and phrases that describe the resource relative to the selected purpose. Discussion / Best Practices: Think of this list as a set of search terms that would help someone find the description field. List the terms in decreasing order of relevance. Entering the data: Be sure the appropriate item is highlighted in the Purpose field before entering the corresponding keywords. Press Enter after each word or phrase. Required for Assets: No SCORM Element Name(s): Keyword Specification page numbers: 2-29, 2-89 About the author Sharon has been an instructional designer for over twenty years and has been involved in online training development since She holds a master's degree in English from UCLA. She was a founding member of the Orange County chapter of the International Society for Performance Improvement (formerly the National Society for Performance and Instruction), and served as their newsletter editor for several years. Upon entering the online learning arena, she was immediately plunged into the emerging world of standards; her initial assignment was to write the documentation for Integrity elearning's WBT Manager, the first webbased learning management system to receive AICC certification. Since

that time, she has increased her knowledge of standards both by maintaining and improving the WBT Manager documentation through several upgrades and by hands-on experience developing standards-based courseware using a wide variety of authoring tools. In addition to developing standards-based courseware for a number of clients, Sharon also developed AICC-compliant sample lessons with accompanying documentation for several well-known authoring tools and courseware generation systems.
