1 RAVASMARTSOLUTIONS - TECH TIPS Purpose Dreamweaver: Cascading Style Sheets By utilizing an external style sheet the entire web site s text styles (color, font, size, etc.) may be changed by just modifying the external style sheet. Let s look at the following example: Original text headings are blue with non text headings are red After changing the external style sheet - the following is an example of the changes (note that these changes occur for all of the pages in the web site): Text headings are now green and the non text headings are blue Created by rrava Page 1 Revised: 11/7/2009
2 External Style Sheet First we will create an external style sheet file and save it with a.css file extension. 3 To create an external style sheet, do the following: Make a folder where you are saving your web pages (ex. CSSExercise) In this folder store all of your.htm, images, and your external css file see the following example: Now let s create the external css file: Start up Dreamweaver Create a blank css document by click on New Document then select basic page then select CSS Created by rrava Page 3 Revised: 11/7/2009

8 Go to each.htm file that you have created and go to Code View Insert the following code into the beginning of each new web page right after the </title> tag: <link href="sample.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> See the following example: NOTE: All new web pages need to include the above code. 11 Modifying the Appearance of the Web Site By using the External Style Sheet, we can quickly change the appearance of our web site by editing the External Style Sheet file.
