3 3 Installation and requirements << MorfixPDF Search is a part of the MorfixPDF program package and it is installed as its integral part. MorfixPDF Search is available also as a freeware designated for distribution with PDF documents indexed by MorfixPDF Index Manager. MorfixPDF Search has the following requirements: Operating system Windows 98 or higher Required software Adobe Acrobat, Acrobat Reader 4, 5 or 6 To install the application run MorfixPDFSearchEN.exe from the installation CD, local hard disk or from the website. To install Morfix PDF Search manually copy the files in Table 1 into the following folder: Acrobat\plug-ins\Morfix. 4 4 End user license agreement << By using all or any portion of the software you accept all the terms and conditions of this agreement. If you do not agree, do not use this software. If you acquired the software on tangible media (e.g. CD, DVD) without an opportunity to review this license and you do not accept this agreement, you may obtain a refund of the amount you originally paid if you: a) do not use the software and b) return it, with proof of payment, to the location from which it was obtained within thirty days of the purchase date. 1. Definitions Software means all of the contents of the files, disk(s), CD-ROM(s) or other media which this Agreement is provided with, including a) Forma or third party computer information or software; b) related explanatory written materials or files ("Documentation"); c) upgrades, modified versions, updates, additions, and copies of the Software. "Use" or "Using" means to install, access, download, copy or otherwise benefit from using the functionality of the Software in accordance with the Documentation. "Permitted Number" means one unless otherwise indicated under a valid license (e.g. volume license). "Forma" means Forma, Ltd., Čajkovského 4, Bratislava, Slovak Republic. 2. Grant of license Forma grants to you a non-exclusive license to Use the Software for the purposes described in the Documentation. General use You may install and Use a copy or any previous version of the same Software for the same Operating System on your compatible computer, up to the Permitted Number of computers. Server Use You may install one copy of the Software on your computer file server for the purpose of downloading and installing the Software onto other computers within your internal network up to the Permitted Number or you may install one copy of the Software on a computer file server within your internal network for the permitted number of users. Backup Copy You may make one backup copy of the Software, provided your backup copy is not installed or used on any computer. Home Use You, as the primary user of the computer on which the Software is installed, may also install the Software on one of your home computers. However, the Software may not be used on your home computer at the same time the Software on the primary computer is being used. 3. Intellectual Property Rights The Software and any copies are the intellectual property of Forma and its suppliers. The Software is protected by copyright and international treaty provisions and applicable laws in the country in which it is being used. Any copies that you are permitted to make pursuant to this Agreement must contain the same copyright and other proprietary notices that appear on or in the Software. Limitations on Reverse Engineering, Decompilation and Disassembly You may not reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble the Software, except and only to the extent that such activity is expressly permitted by applicable law notwithstanding this limitation. Separation of components The Software is licensed as an integrated single product and may not be disintegrated into its components. Any separated use of its components as well as a utilization of the components from other applications is prohibited.

Description of other rights and restrictions Not for Resale Software If the Software is labeled Not For Resale or NFR, then, notwithstanding other sections of this license agreement, your use of the Software is limited to use for demonstration, test, or evaluation purposes and you may not resell it. Rental You may not rent, lease, or lend the Software. Trademarks This License agreement does not grant you any rights regarding any trademarks or service marks. Support services Forma may provide you with support services related to the Software ( Support Services ). Use of the Support Services is governed by the Forma policies and programs described in the user manual, in online documentation, and/or in other Forma - provided materials. Any supplemental software code provided to you as part of the Support Services shall be considered part of the Software product and subject to the terms and conditions of this license agreement. With respect to technical information you provide to Forma as part of the Support Services, Forma may use such information for its business purposes, including for product support and development. Forma will not utilize such technical information in a form that personally identifies you. Termination Without prejudice to any other rights, Forma may terminate this license agreement if you fail to comply with the terms and conditions of this license agreement. In such event, you must destroy all copies of the Software and all of its component parts. 5. Upgrade If the Software is labeled as an upgrade, you must be properly licensed to use a product identified by Forma as being eligible for the upgrade in order to use the Software product. You may only use a Software labeled as an upgrade in accordance with the terms of this license agreement. 6. Delivery The Software, Documentation and upgrades are delivered in digital format only. Forma will not deliver any printed documentation to licensee. 7. LIMITED WARRANTY The Forma Software has been provided by Forma solely as is and without warranty by Forma of any kind, and, to the maximum extent allowed by applicable law, Forma expressly disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including, but not limited to, the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose, or any warranty of noninfringement. There is no warranty that the functions contained in the Forma Software will meet your requirements, or that the operation thereof will be uninterrupted or error-free. Forma and/or any of its licensors do not warrant, guarantee, or make any representations regarding the use or the results of the use of this product with respect to its performance, accuracy, reliability, security capability, currentness or otherwise. No oral or written information or advice given by any person shall create a warranty in any way whatsoever relating to Forma and/or any of its licensors. 7 7 Features << MorfixPDF Search is a powerful PDF indexing tool for Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Acrobat Reader that allows you to publish and search large PDF document collections on the Web, internets, networks, CDs and DVDs. It is fully integrated with Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader and works as its plug-in. Its use is not limited to a specific language mutation of the program (e.g. EN, CE,...). It is intended for searching in PDF documents containing full-text index created by MorfixPDF Index Manager. Installation of MorfixPDF Search is available as a part of the MorfixPDF program package or a stand-alone freely distributable package. It is available in several language mutations. Linguistic modules of diverse languages may be attached. After installation the MorfixPDF item is added to the menu of Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader with a submenu and a group of icons for searching: Figure 1 Extended menu of Adobe Acrobat

8 8 System bearing << MorfixPDF Search offers advanced capabilities of search for words, phrases and expressions in PDF documents containing a full-text index created by MorfixPDF Index Manager. Here is the list of the linguistic functions that you may use in searching: Linguistic search options: stemming searches for all words and their modifications having the same word stem thesaurus searches for synonyms of the requested word fuzzy searches for words that differ from the search string in one or more diacritics or typographic inaccuracies wildcards symbols that you can type directly into the search string as substitutes for letters Logical operators in search phrase containing more than one word: AND every word from the search phrase will be found OR at least one word from the search string will be found NOT no words from the search string is found NEAR every word in the search string is found, their sequence is ignored but distance between words should be preserved in accordance with the NEAR value NEXT the search string is found in the same word order as search query Expressions search for phrases defined by a combination of AND, OR, NOT or NEAR operators Figure 2 Main window of MorfixPDF Search

9 9 Index management << Before you start searching in PDF documents, select indexes created to these documents. From menu choose: MorfixPDF > Searching or click on the icon Click the Indexes... button. The Index Management window will display. Files list in selected index Selected index properties Figure 3 Index management window Use the Add New... and Remove buttons to change the index list. After index list editing has been finished click the Close button. REMARK: The Remove button will not delete the file from the disk. It only modifies the list. In Main window you can choose active indexes from the list, i.e. indexes that will be searched trough. Active index Inactive index Figure 4 Index activation

10 10 Searching << You may type any searched word, phrase or expression into Main window in the Search for field. The maximum length of the request is 1023 characters. The maximum length of each word in the request is 63 characters. All occurrences of the word will be found, regardless of capitalization (in the search string or in the PDF document). Phrases and expressions MorfixPDF Search is able to search for phrases and requests containing several words with diverse relationship between words in the request. As PDF documents are indexed page by page, fulfillment of the condition is evaluated on the document page level (not the whole PDF document). Figure 5 Search operators AND Only pages (documents) containing all words in the request will be found. The words may be spread freely on the page. Use the NEAR operator if you want to find words with specified distance from each other. You can search for phrases by using the NEXT operator. EXAMPLE: Search for Operator Result father mother AND All pages containing words father and mother, regardless of their location on page. OR All pages (documents) containing any of the words in request are found. EXAMPLE: Search for Operator Result father mother OR All pages containing at least one of the words father or mother.

11 11 NOT All pages (documents) containing the first word but not any other word EXAMPLE: Search for Operator Result father mother NOT All pages containing the word father and not containing the word mother NEAR Only those pages (documents) are found which contain all words in the request where the distance between them in the text is not greater than the value specified in the NEAR is: field, regardless of word order. Range of NEAR is: is 1 to 15. EXAMPLE: Search for Operator Result father mother NEAR All pages containing the words father and mother within the defined distance (i.e. father saw mother, mother called for father ). NEXT All pages (documents) containing the exact phrase are found. EXAMPLE: Search for Operator Result father mother NEXT All pages containing the word mother followed by the word father. WARNING: Do not write operators between words if you select operators AND, OR, NOT, NEAR or NEXT. OPERATORS It is possible to write complex requests (expressions) by using operators. The combination of operators is free. It is necessary to write operators (some of AND, OR, NOT a NEAR ) between the search words or phrases. The NEXT operator (phrase) is defined by typing quotation marks ( ) at the beginning and end of the phrase. Operators are evaluated sequentially from left to right. This can be changed by using parenthesis. Expressions with nested parenthesis are allowed up to the 4 th level.

All pages containing the word children and at least one of the words father or mother. All pages containing the word children, or pages containing both words father and mother and not containing the word grandchild. All pages containing the phrases young father and young mother at the same time. Linguistic options In the Linguistic Options group you can choose the language dependent options. If no option is set, only exactly matching word shapes will be found. Figure 6 Linguistic options LANGUAGE This setting specifies the language of requests. It determines which stemmer and thesaurus will be used for searching. The choice is ignored if no module exists for the selected language. If you select a language (e.g. English ) for searching in several indexes created in different languages, only the indexes created in this language will be searched. The All option forces searching in all active documents regardless of the language the documents were created in. STEMMING The stemmer of the appropriate language is used for searching. You can enter words in the search request in any shape (inflexion). All grammatical shapes of these words will be found. If you are searching in several indexes created in different languages, all shapes of the searched word will be found only in the indexes created with the same language as the searched word. Only exact shapes of the searched word will be found in other publications.

13 13 THESAURUS Not only occurrences of searched words are found but also their synonyms, i.e. the words with the same or similar meaning. The choice is only valid if the Stemming option is checked. FUZZY DIA This option allows finding words misspelled in diacritics or the words are searched regardless of the diacritics. FUZZY TYPO This option allows to find misspelled words with the mistake in a single letter mistyped letter, single letter missing or in excess. WARNING: Using any of the options Fuzzy Dia or Fuzzy Typo cancels the linguistic options Stemming and Thesaurus. WILDCARDS Wildcards are the characters used for substitution of one or more letters in searched words.? substitutes one character * substitutes none (zero) or one or more characters These characters are mainly used when we do not know the exact written form of the word or if we want to find all shapes of the word strange in the current language or the stemmer is not able to identify it, e.g. names. Example: Slovak* results to Slovak, Slovakian, etc. WARNING: Using wildcards in a word cancels all other linguistic options for this word. Wildcards may not be used as a substitute of the first letter in the searched word. Search history Click on the icon beside the Searched for field (Fig. 2) to display a menu with the last 11 requests being searched. These are ready for reuse. The search history is saved between sessions of Acrobat Reader. Figure 7 Search history

14 14 Search results << Click on the Search button to start searching (Fig. 2). Results will be displayed in the Search Results window. Figure 8 Search results The table presents the information about the name of a PDF file, number of occurrences in this file, index name, etc. To order the results click the header of the appropriate column. The results are ordered ascendently (or descendently) in accordance with chosen criteria (column header), e.g. by the number of occurrences or by file name. You can adjust display options of the table according to your individual preferences. Click the Options button and select the information you want to display in search results. Figure 9 Search results displaying options Double click a row in the Search Results table or click the Display button to display the appropriate document with highlighted word occurrences. This window stays in forefront, so you will be able to step trough the documents. Use the Prev. page or Next page buttons to browse trough pages with highlighted word occurrences.

15 15 The same functions have the icons and menu items: MorfixPDF > Previous page and MorfixPDF > Next page. MorfixPDF > Previous file and MorfixPDF > Next file. Using shortcuts displayed in the menu is also very efficient (Fig. 1). Click New Search to run new search. Click New Search to run new search. If the Close on Display check box is checked the Search Results window will close on displaying the requested document. You can display the window again trough the menu MorfixPDF > Search results or by clicking the icon Searching in search results or by clicking the Results button in the main window (Fig.2). If you have already made a search and want to reduce the results count, use the Last. search selection that allows to search in the results of a previous search (or in the indexes which contain word occurrences of the previous search).
