1 Google Universal Analytics Integration Set-up Ifbyphone s Google Universal Analytics Integration enables you to track your phone calls and push the data into the standard and custom reports in Universal Analytics. Ifbyphone will send calls into the Universal Analytics interface and attribute the call to the visitor data captured by Google. Note that Ifbyphone phone numbers can be tracked in Google Analytics even if they are used for offline advertising. Things you need to create the Universal Analytics Integration: 1. Your Google Universal Analytics ID (e.g. UA-XXXXXXXX-X). You can find this in a number of places in the Analytics interface: clicking the admin button in the top right corner is an easy way to find it. 2. You need to create a Custom Metric in Universal Analytics, and designate an index for the Custom Metric. a. Click Admin in the top right corner of the Universal Analytics interface. b. Click the Custom Definitions tab. c. Click the Custom Metrics sub tab. d. Click Add Custom Metric. e. Name the Custom Metric. (This is the name that will populate the column header in Google Analytics reporting.) f. Select Formatting Type : Integer. (The Minimum and Maximum Value fields are left blank intentionally.) g. Make sure Active box is checked. h. Click Create. 1
2 i. On the next screen with code examples click Done. j. On the Custom Metric List screen, note the Custom Metric Index assigned to the Custom Metric you have just created. (You will need this in the next step.) To link your Ifbyphone account to your Universal Analytics Profile, follow the directions below: 3. Under the Advanced Services tab in your Ifbyphone account, select Google Integration and then Create a new Google Universal Analytics Integration. 4. From the Google Universal Analytics Post Call Action Configuration page: a. Name the Post Call Action, for your own reference. b. Enter your Google Universal Analytics ID. c. Enter an Event Label. This field is optional and if filled in will be only for your reference. d. Enter an Event Value. This field is optional and if filled in will allow you to define a dollar value for every call that Ifbyphone sends to Google. If left blank, Ifbyphone will pass the duration of each call as the Event Value. e. Enter a Metric Index. This is a required field and should match the Custom Metric Index that you have define in the Universal Analytics Interface. f. Specify a Minimum Call Duration for the call. Only calls that reach this length will be sent to Analytics, although all calls will still be tracked in Ifbyphone s reporting. g. Check Configured Numbers Only if you don t want data for every phone number in the account automatically sent to this profile. h. Save the Post Call Action. 2
3 To point specific Ifbyphone phone numbers to your recently set-up Google Analytics Profile, continue with the directions below: 5. From the Basic Services tab, select Phone Routing. 6. Select the phone number you want to track by clicking the Configure icon for that number. You can also do this in bulk by checking off particular numbers on the left and clicking Change Routing for Selected Numbers. 7. On the Phone Number Configuration page, click Google Analytics Options. 8. Select the integration you have just created from the Google Analytics Integration dropdown. 9. In the following fields you can define the UTM s to be passed to Google Analytics when a call is placed to this particular phone number. If you are using SourceTrak in conjunction with this integration, it is recommended that you contact Ifbyphone and speak with a SourceTrak Specialist. For more information on the UTM s you can also visit the following: Save your work. Once configured, Ifbyphone will automatically start sending virtual page views for each phone call. 3
4 To view calls as conversions in Google Adwords: 11. Click Admin in Google Analytics. 12. Click the Goals tab. 13. Add new Goal a. Give your Goal a name. b. Set the Goal Type as Event. c. Set the Category is equal to Inbound Call. d. Set the Action is equal to Call. e. Label : is left blank unless the customer has specified an event label in the Ifbyphone portal. f. Value : If you set a value in previous step 2d then specify that value here as an is equal to match. If you left it blank in 2d then set Value to that is greater than and use 0 as the value. g. Goal Value is optional. h. Save Goal. 4
5 14. Once you have created the Goal, simply import the Phone Call Goal to the Google Adwords account you have linked with your Google Universal Analytics account. i. For help linking your Adwords and Analytics account see this post. 5
6 Google Universal Analytics Integration Viewing Calls in Google Analytics Reporting To view your call data within Google Universal Analytics: 1. As Events a. Click on Content and then Events." b. You can also view Events in the Real Time section of Universal Analytics. 6
7 2. As Custom Metrics a. In any standard report click the Customize button and you will be taken to the configuration page for that report. b. Once you are on the configuration page, click the + add metric button to add a new metric to the report. c. Select the Custom Metric Name you previously created for Phone Calls in step 2. d. Click Save. 7
8 Google Universal Analytics Integration Known Issues A list of things to keep in mind when using Ifbyphone s Google Universal Analytics integration: 1. Today our integration will not work if you are using Google Tag Manager to place your Universal Analytics tracking script on your website. 2. Our integration will not work if you are using the no display JavaScript feature of SourceTrak.
