Editing and creating new pages and posts in WordPress WordPress is a highly successful Open Source platform that now runs 14.7% of the top million websites in the world. Within the US, 22 out of every 100 domains are built on the back of WordPress. (See more) But like any software, it can be intimidating to those not familiar with the administrative backend or dashboard. Because WordPress is so highly customizable, most setups and features will vary, but this document will take a look at the basic functions that are available to WordPress Editors by default. To begin with, login to the WordPress Dashboard. Unless otherwise directed by your webmaster, you can access the login page via: (add /wp-admin to the end of your site s domain name). You ll be presented with the login form. Enter your username and password and you ll be taken directly to the WordPress Dashboard. The content portion of the page may vary, but the menu options on the right hand side are fairly standard. The two areas we ll focus on in this document are Posts and Pages. While Posts and Pages are highly similar in look, form and function, the main difference between the two are that Posts are typically listed in reverse chronologically by publication date within your site and Pages are typically considered static content and typically contain content that does not regularly change.
Posts are also what s typically considered the blog portion of your website and also generate the information in your RSS feeds, while Pages will have no affect on your RSS or other syndicated content. Editing or creating a Post To view your Posts, or to create a new one, simply click Posts in the left hand column of the WordPress Dashboard. In the drop down menu, you can click All Posts to view the previously drafted and published posts, or click Add New to create an entirely new post. Once you ve clicked Add New or selected a previously drafted post from the All Posts page, you ll be taken to the standard Post editing page. You can edit your posts in either Visual mode or HTML mode. Visual mode is fine for most users and offers the ability to edit posts similar to your typical word processor with What You See is What You Get (WYSIWYG) buttons and auto-formatting features. However, there may be times you need to copy HTML code directly into your post (i.e. embedding audio or video from an outside source) and you ll want to switch to the HTML editor. You can easily toggle between the two by clicking the Visual or HTML tabs in the upper right corner of the post toolbar (#1 in the following image). NOTE: switching between Visual and HTML tabs can change your formatting, so be sure your post is formatted correctly if you switch back and forth multiple times.
The other main areas to pay attention to on the Post Page are the Title (#2), Post Content area (#3) and the Publish button (#4). By default your blog should auto-save your revisions every 60 seconds, however if you would like to save your post for to work on, or publish at a later date, click the Save Draft button rather than Publish before leaving the Post Page. You can also preview your post by clicking the Preview button. This will open a preview of the latest saved version of your post. #2 #1 #3 #4 Once you re satisfied with your content click Publish and your post will appear in the blog section of your website.
Editing or creating a Page Creating or editing a Page is very similar to editing and creating a Post. To view your Pages, or to create a new one, simply click Pages in the left hand column of the WordPress Dashboard. In the drop down menu, you can click All Pages to view the previously drafted and published posts, or click Add New to create an entirely new post. Clicking All Pages will open the list of all your current pages. To edit a specific page, simply click the title, or when you hover over the title, an individual menu for that Page will appear and you can click Edit.
Once you open the Page you d like to edit (or click Add New to create a new page) you ll see the Edit Page screen, which is very similar to the Edit Post screen. Just like a Post, you can edit your Pages in either Visual mode or HTML mode. You can easily toggle between the two by clicking the Visual or HTML tabs in the upper right corner of the post toolbar (#1 in the following image). The other main areas to pay attention to on the Edit Page screen are the Title (#2), Page Content area (#3) and the Publish button (#4). Also, just like a Post, by default your blog should auto-save your revisions every 60 seconds. However, if you would like to save your Page for to work on, or publish at a later date, click the Save Draft button rather than Publish before leaving the Page. You can also preview your Page by clicking the Preview button. This will open a preview of the latest saved version of your post.
#2 #1 #3 #4 Once you re satisfied with your content click Publish and your Page content will appear on your website.
Adding an image to a Post or Page Adding an image to a Post or Page are essentially identical in process. To begin, simply click the Upload/Insert Image button in your Post/Page toolbar (red box below). This will open the Add an Image window. You have a few options here but to add an image from scratch, be sure you re on the From Computer tab and then click the Select Files button.
This will open your computer s file manager window (varies per Operating System). Select the file(s) you d like to add and then click Open. To add multiple files on a PC you can hold down the CTRL button on your keyboard while clicking the various files.
SEO Bonus (before uploading your files, name the files with short, descriptive phrases (with hyphens in between the words). So rather than the typical default of DSC-0124.jpg, use wrestling-body-slam.jpg or wrestlingreferee-bump.jpg. This will help later on. Once the files are uploaded they ll appear as a list in the same window. NOTE: If you receive a Fatal error: message (as seen below) this is typically because the file you re trying to upload is too large for WordPress to process and compress. Try resizing the image with Photoshop or a free online editor like Photoshop.com or Picnik.com To complete the process, you ll need to add a bit of information about the image. Click the Show button on each line to add information about that photo. Your filename will appear in the title field automatically. You can edit it to make it more user friendly. So wrestling-body-slam would become Wrestling Body Slam. Add a good Alternate Text. This appears if for some reason the photo doesn t load and is also what readers for the visually impaired see/speak. If you d like to add a caption for the photo, you can do so in the Caption field. Next, for SEO optimization (see bonus above) click Post URL under the Link URL field. This means when someone clicks on the image, it will open a separate page with the photo (and gives Search Engines another way to find your site).
Finally chose an alignment (None, Left, Center, Right) and a Size. Then click Insert into Post to finalize the process and to add the photo into your Page or Post. If you upload multiple photos at once, you ll need to add those photos separately into your Page or Post. To do so, click the Upload/Insert Image button again only this time, rather than using the From Computer Tab, you can select the (already uploaded) image from the Gallery or Media Library tabs. The Gallery tab is a list of all the files attached to the post already and the Media Library is a list of all the files already uploaded to your site. The list will look similar to what you saw when you first uploaded the image. Simply click Show for each image you d like to add and fill out the form as you did above. Click Insert into Post and the image will be inserted. Repeat and rinse as many times as needed.
