Getting Started System Requirements Windows Microsoft Windows 95/98, NT 4.0 Workstation, 2000 Professional, Me, or XP (Home or Professional) Minimum 64 mb of ram; 128 mb of ram for any OS is recommended Netscape Communicator 4.77 or 7.x, or Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x or better Minimum 5 mb hard drive space available Access to the internet (via dial-up or broadband connection) Note: Netscape 6 is not supported. Opera, Mozilla and other browsers are not supported at this time. Macintosh Macintosh OS 9.1 or better Minimum 64 mb of ram; 128mb or more is recommended Netscape Communicator 4.77 or 7.x, Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x or better, or Safari 1.1 or better Minimum 5 mb hard drive space available Access to the internet (via dial-up or broadband connection) Note: While Linux/Unix platforms are not supported at this time, this does not exclude Mac OSX since the Darwin Unix is integrated into the Mac OS. Netscape 6 is not supported. Opera, Mozilla and other browsers are not supported at this time. Linux/Unix Users Linux/Unix platforms are not supported at this time. 5 The ebrary Reader To begin using ebrary, you will first need to install the ebrary Reader, our patent-pending software application that takes just seconds to download. The ebrary Reader gives ebrary all of its unique functionality that enables you to Discover, Optimize, Expand and Save your research quickly, easily and efficiently. Included in the ebrary Reader s functionality is the ability to view single pages online, one at a time, rather than having to download the entire document onto your desktop or ebook reading device. The ebrary Reader also enables ebrary InfoTools and other powerful search and navigational capabilities. To download the ebrary Reader, click on the Get ebrary Reader button. You will not need to restart your computer, but may need to refresh your browser. 7 Creating Your Personal Bookshelf We recommend that you create a bookshelf before getting started with ebrary. Bookshelves allow you to automatically save and manage bookmarks, highlights and annotations as you conduct your research, providing a dynamic archive for future reference. In-depth details about the bookshelf features are provided on page 17. To set up a bookmark, click on the bookshelf tab and follow the simple instructions. You can log on to your bookshelf using your user name and password from your library, home office, dorm room, or any computer with Internet access. 8 II. Discover ebrary offers a number of different searching options from within the ebrary Reader that allow you to Discover the information you need quickly, easily and efficiently. We enable seamless searching across ebrary s content databases, information from other databases to which your library subscribes, and resources on the Web. ebrary supports full-text search the most efficient way to search through book content online as well as Boolean and proximity operators. Simple Search This features searches the full-text, tile and subject areas of documents based on key words and phrases. 9 Advanced Search Advanced Search enables you to search by a number of different parameters. Simple search button Search for keywords or phrases Use pull down menu to search in text, subject, title, author or publisher Refine results by searching by key word or phrase in text, subject, title, author or publisher (using pull down menu) Further refine, expand or reset your search Search in all documents, or in books, journals, maps, reports and sheet music Search by language: English, Spanish, Portuguese, French Browse ebrary enables you to browse through titles based on subject areas. 10 The Search Results Page You can further narrow your search directly from within the search results page. Simply click on information pertaining to each document in the search results to narrow your search by contributor, subject or publisher. Search results can be sorted by score (relevance), title, contributor or date. 11 Boolean Search In addition to full-text searching, ebrary supports Boolean and proximity operators. To initiate a Boolean search, follow the examples below. Note that the Boolean operators must be in CAPS. mark twain AND river Returns documents containing both the phrase Mark Twain and the word river. nixon WITHIN-30 McNamara Returns documents containing nixon (within 30 words of) McNamara. paper airplanes OR paper airplane Returns documents with singular or plurals. twain AND NOT mark twain AND scanner Focuses in on the scanning meaning of twain. java AND SUN AND NOT coffee Get the right meaning of Java. ( business strategies OR corporate strategies ) You may use parentheses to further define your searches. (business OR corporate) WITHIN-1strategies A very similar search, but this one would find strategies business as well. 12 III. Optimize The ebrary Reader optimizes how you view and navigate through content online, allowing you to access the information you need quickly, easily and efficiently. Viewing With the ebrary Reader content display area, entire documents are viewed online, one page at a time. This eliminates waiting for entire documents to download onto your desktop, and no ebook reading devices are necessary. Even the largest files with photos and graphics can be accessed by anyone, regardless of Internet connectivity speed and bandwidth limitations. Our content can just as easily be viewed over a 56k modem. Furthermore, ebrary allows you to customize how you view documents online. From the Reader toolbar, you may select different zoom options, choose to view facing pages, and scale to fit. You may also alter the viewing screen size by hiding the table of contents in the display area. 13 Navigation The ebrary Reader makes it easy to navigate throughout a document, in a number of convenient ways: Navigate by search term instantly link to the next or previous occurrence of your search term(s). ebrary highlights every occurrence of your key word or search phrase in every document based upon your initial and advanced search queries. 14 IV. Expand ebrary s unique InfoTools technology enables you to Expand your research quickly, easily and efficiently. InfoTools seamlessly links search queries to additional online resources within library databases and on the Web. InfoTools ebrary InfoTools can be activated by selecting text with your mouse, then selecting InfoTools from the ebrary Reader toolbar or right clicking with your mouse. You can also set preferences enabling the InfoTools menu to automatically pop up after selecting text. Note: You will need to deactivate or reconfigure any pop-up window blockers, or other Internet security application that blocks pop-up windows and/or cookies. Define retrieve dictionary definitions for selected term(s) Explain retrieve encyclopedia entries for selected term(s) Locate retrieve maps related to selected term(s) Translate to/from French, German, Italian, Spanish, or Portuguese Who retrieve addresses, biographies, and bibliographies for the selected term(s) Search Document search and retrieve information within the current document for the selected term(s) Search All Documents search and retrieve information within all documents in the collection for the selected terms(s) Search Web search and retrieve information from the Web (using search engines) for the selected term(s) Search Library search and retrieve information through your libraries OPAC and other databases for the selected term(s) Highlight text and archive on your bookshelf for future use Add to Bookshelf copy a link to the title onto your bookshelf for future use Copy text and paste into Word or any text application, complete with automatic bibliographical citations Copy Bookmark copy URLs from specific sections of books or other documents onto your bookshelf for future use Print pages complete with bibliographical citations Toggle Automenu set the InfoTools menu to pop up (or not) after selecting the desired text Preferences set your viewing defaults (zoom, facing pages, etc.), highlighting color default, table of contents and menu preferences Help open the Help window About ebrary Reader Information about the ebrary Reader ebrary patron user guide 11

20 IV. Save and Manage ebrary s bookshelf features and automatic bibliographical citations allow you to Save and manage your research quickly, easily and efficiently. Personal Bookshelves As mentioned previously in this guide, we suggest that you set up a bookshelf before you get started using ebrary s Reader and accessing our content. This feature enables you to create a dynamic archive of bookmarks, highlights, and annotations as you conduct your research. Information in your bookshelf can be stored online, and/or printed and saved in a physical archive. To create a bookshelf, just click on the bookshelf tab. Your personal bookshelf is password protected, and can be accessed from any computer with Internet access. Items archived on your bookshelf can be deleted at any time. 21 Highlighting Highlighting ebrary gives you the ability to highlight text in three different colors: yellow, pink and blue. Links to highlights are automatically stored on your personal bookshelf. To highlight, select text with your mouse, then choose highlight from the InfoTools menu or ebrary Reader toolbar. To remove highlighting, select unhighlight from the InfoTools menu. Note: You will need to be logged in to your personal bookshelf in order to save highlights. If you are not logged in, highlights will only be accessible during the current ebrary session. Remove highlighting Annotating Annotating from the Notes tab With ebrary, you can take notes along side a page and automatically save links to them on your bookshelf for future reference. Note: You will need to sign in to your bookshelf in order to save notes. ebrary patron user guide 18
22 Copy/Paste and Printing with Automatic Citations ebrary allows you to copy/paste text into Word or any text application and print pages. Bibliographical citations are associated and saved with the pasted text or on the printed page. These citations also include a URL to the exact location in the book from which the information was obtained. ebrary patron user guide 19
