3 What is the Internet? A global network connecting millions of computers that: exchanges news, information, and opinions Millions of personal computers connected to thousands of host servers
4 What does WWW stand for? World Wide Web System of computers that share information A worldwide collection of electronic documents. The Internet and World Wide Web are not the same the Web is available via the Internet. Not all servers are part of the World Wide Web.
5 What is an ISP? Internet Service Provider A service company that provides a user with an account on a host computer to have access to the Internet

7 How do you navigate the Internet? With a browser, which lets you view information on the Internet Different browsers can have radically different capabilities and limitations.

9 Locating Resources Online URL Uniform Resource Locator. It has a four part addressing scheme: Transfer Protocol: Tells the browser the format of the message Domain Name Where the Internet site is housed Pathname Folder or directory where the file is stored. Filename Identifies the file
10 What is a domain name? Gives every Internet server an easy address (rather than remembering an IP address) Organized right to left, with more specific descriptors on the left. The most right descriptor is the top level domain the part after the dot The middle portion is known as the mid-level domain The machine name (www) is to the far left URL s and Domain names are not technically the same URL s are more specific.

Netiquette A set of rules that a person using the Internet abides by Showing courtesy and respect on the Internet User Friendly Easily understood commands The computer illiterate person can still operate the system Information is put out in reasonably correct format
13 Common Internet Terms Continued Wifi A popular technology that allows an electronic device to exchange data or connect to the internet wirelessly using radio waves. Wiki A collaborative website that can be edited by anyone with access. Podcast Publishing audio files to the Internet that can be streamed or downloaded for playback. Blog Short for Web Log; a journal maintained by an individual or group and posted on a site for public viewing or comment. Filtering/Censorship Blocking access to the Web pages identified as undesirable; some call the practice censorship--the control or suppression of what can be accessed, published, or viewed on the Internet.
