1 This document explains several types of Windows Vista assistance available for people with visual, dexterity, or hearing impairments. For people with corrected vision Adjust the monitor to improve visiblity. Change screen resolution Adjust font size For people with low vision Increase the visiblity of the items on the computer screen. Turn on Magnifier Use High Contrast colors For people who are blind Make the computer read text out loud. Turn on Narrator to convert text to spoken English Set up alternative input devices For... people..... with.... hearing 3 difficulties Have the computer show sounds visually. Use SoundSentry to turn on visual warnings instead of sound warnings Display captions for the computer s speech and sound For people with dexterity difficulties Make the mouse easier to use. 2 For people with corrected vision Adjust the monitor to improve visibility. Change screen resolution Adjust font size Change screen resolution Adjust font size Select Control Panel, then Appearance and Personalization, then Personalization, then Display Settings. In the Display Settings dialog box: Select a screen resolution value by moving the slider arrow. Recommended settings: by 768 pixels is the optimal setting by 600 pixels can be used successfully, and will make the text and pictures appear larger, but will not properly display small bold type. In the Display Settings prompt: Click Yes to keep the settings. Note: changing this setting requires you to restart your computer. Select Control Panel, then Appearance and Personalization, then Personalization, then in the left panel select Adjust Font Size (DPI). In the User Account Control dialog box: Click Continue. In the DPI Scaling dialog box: Select the text size you can read comfortably. In the Microsoft Windows prompt: Click Restart Now to restart your computer and apply these settings. Recommended: - These adjustments will not affect the Cognitive Tutor. Instead, install a special file found at techresource_accessibility.cfm - Follow the instructions for Larger Fonts. 2
3 For people with low vision Increase the visiblity of the items on the computer screen. Turn on Magnifier Use High Contrast colors Turn on Magnifier Use High Contrast colors then Ease of Access Center, then Start Magnifier button. then Ease of Access Center, then Set Up High Contrast link. The magnifier is now turned on. In the Magnifier Settings dialog box, select the scale factor for the magnification level that works best for you. Recommended settings: - You can use the magnifier window like a magnifying glass by moving it around the screen. - You can dock the window in a fixed place, but reduce the size of the magnifier window to make room for the Cognitive Tutor window. In the Magnifier dialog box: Select the Docked checkbox To use Magnifier but hide the Magnifier dialog box, select the Minimize button. 5. In the Make the computer easier to see page, Click the Choose a High Contrast Color Scheme link. In the Appearance Settings dialog box: Select the a color scheme and other appearance settings. Click the OK button to change the appearance and close the dialog box. Note: the High Contrast setting does not affect the contents of the Cognitive Tutor window. To save the setting: To turn off Magnifier, in the Magnifier dialog box, select the Close button. 3
4 For people who are blind Make the computer read text out loud. Turn on Narrator to convert text to spoken English Set up alternative input devices Turn on Narrator Set up alternative input devices then Ease of Access Center, then Start Narrator link. To use Narrator but hide the Narrator dialog box, select the Minimize button. To turn off Narrator, in the Narrator dialog box, select the Exit button. In the Exit Narrator dialog box: Click the Yes button. To close the Control Panel: Click the Close button Recommended: - A third party product is needed to read the Cognitive Tutor. Use Read&Write Gold by texthelp, which has a Screenshot Reader tool. Use the tool to select individual blocks of text to be read. then Ease of Access Center, then Use the computer without a mouse or keyboard link. On the Use the computer without a mouse or keyboard page: Select from the three options available according to the device you purchased: - Use on-screen keyboard - Use speech recognition - Learn about additional assistive technologies online To save your settings, in the Use the computer without a mouse or keyboard page: 4
5 For people with hearing difficulties Have the computer show sounds visually. Use SoundSentry to turn on visual warnings instead of sound warnings Display captions for the computer s speech and sound Use SoundSentry Display Captions then Ease of Access Center, then Use text or visual alternatives for sounds link. then Ease of Access Center, then Use text or visual alternatives for sounds link. On the Use text or visual alternatives for sounds page: Select the Turn on visual notification for sounds (SoundSentry) check box. To turn off SoundSentry, clear the Turn on visual notification for sounds check box. Under Choose the visual warning: Select the visual warning you want from the list of options. Recommended setting: - Try Flash Active Caption Bar as this can be seen below the Cognitive Tutor window in the Toolbar On the Use text or visual alternatives for sounds page: Select the Turn on text captions for spoken dialog check box. To turn off ShowSounds clear the Turn on text captions for spoken dialog check box and click the Save button. Click Save. 5
6 For people with dexterity difficulties Make the mouse easier to use. Adjust the double-click speed of the mouse Change the speed of the mouse pointer Adjust the double-click speed of the mouse Change the speed of the mouse pointer Select Control Panel, then Hardware and Sound, then Mouse. Select Control Panel, then Hardware and Sound, then Mouse. In the Mouse Properties dialog box, on the Buttons tab, under Double-click speed: Select the double-click speed you want by moving the Speed slider arrow left for slower and right for faster. In the Mouse Properties dialog box: Select the Pointer Options tab. On the Pointer Options tab, under Motion: Select a pointer speed by moving the Select a pointer speed slider arrow toward Slow or Fast. 6
7 For people with dexterity impairment Make the computer keyboard easier to use. Use MouseKeys to control the pointer with the numeric keypad Turn on FilterKeys to ignore brief or repeated keystrokes Use MouseKeys Turn on FilterKeys then Ease of Access Center, then Make the Mouse Easier to Use. then Ease of Access Center, then Make the Keyboard Easier to Use. 5. On the Make the Mouse Easier to Use page: Select the Turn On MouseKeys check box. To turn off MouseKeys, clear the Turn On Mousekeys check box. Choose any other options you want. To access MouseKeys settings: Be sure that Use MouseKeys is selected. Click the Set Up MouseKeys link. In the Set Up MouseKeys page: Select the options you want. Click Save again. 5. In the Make the Keyboard Easier to Use page: Select the Turn On FilterKeys check box. To turn off FilterKeys, clear the Use FilterKeys check box. To access FilterKeys settings: Click the Setup Filter Keys link. In the Set Up FilterKeys page: Select the options you want by selecting or clearing the check boxes. Click Save again.
