1 MGMT 230 WEB SITE PROJECT (INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT) This assignment will be submitted in two parts. Part 1 will consist of written website planning and design documentation for a small website (maximum 6 web pages) for a business or non-profit organization. Part 2 will consist of the development and production of the website itself using WordPress. Students will work individually. Marks are allocated as follows: Part 1: Website planning and design documentation: Due March 9th, 2018 no later than 4:30pm via Value: 20% Part 2: Website production Due April 13th, 2018 no later than 4:30pm via Value: 10% Getting Started: Choose a business or non-profit organization for which you would like to design and construct a simple website, minimum of 6 pages. This can be a real or a fictitious business or organization. You must get approval for your choice from me by before beginning your project. If you can, make a selection that is relevant to you, someone you know, and that you can utilize beyond the scope of this course. PART 1 WEBSITE PLANNING AND DESIGN DOCUMENTATION Your objective for this part of the assignment is to produce a set of planning and design documents that will be used to guide the actual production of your website. Labs, lectures, and required readings will provide you with the material you need to complete this part of the assignment. You will refer to your planning and design document throughout the production phase as you build your site, so plan as carefully and realistically as possible. PLAN STRUCTURE: Your plan must include the following sections: SECTION 1: Goals, target audience, business model, and competitors 1. A very brief description of the business or organization for which you are creating the website (where it is located, what it does, number of employees, how long in business etc). Include a sentence to explain the overall business purpose of your website. 2. A description of the target audience(s) for the site (demographics, psychographics etc)

2 3. A detailed user profile of at least one member of your target audience a. How do you anticipate someone will actually engage with the site? b. What type of content do they require for you to successfully convert them as a customer? 4. A list of at least 10 goals for the website and the criteria that you will use to measure success. a. Ask yourself "what do I want people to do on the site?" Use the following table format: 5. Web site goal Success criteria Time Frame (start date end date) a. Important Note: The site must be designed so that these goals can be met. 6. The domain name and top level domain(s) that you would choose for your site. The domain MUST be available for registration. You will NOT be registering it, so include a screenshot as evidence that the domain was available. Explain what the most important factors were that you took into account in selecting this name and top level domain(s). 7. An explanation of how you will generate revenue from the site to support your online activity. If there is no direct revenue from the site, explain how you will justify the expenditure on building and maintaining the site in terms of organizational cost savings, lead generation etc. 8. A brief overview of the web presence and web strategy of two competitors, including URLs. a. What can you discern of their strategy? b. What are they doing well? Not doing well? c. What opportunities can you capitalize on?

3 SECTION 2: Information architecture, page layout, etc 1. A site map for the site showing how the six web pages will link together. (See sample provided from January 15th slides) 2. Wireframes or diagrams of each of the six web pages that will be in your website, (these can be produced in Microsoft Word, or a diagramming program of your choice). These will act as the blueprints from which you will build your site. ( See sample provided from January 15th slides ) 3. Each diagram should show: a. The layout (main content area, sidebar etc) for each of the 6 pages in your site. (Use your chosen WordPress Theme Options to find this information). b. The position of the navigation menu (for your chosen WordPress theme), and the content of the navigation labels. c. The headings and subheadings for different areas of the pages. d. The positioning of the textual contents of each area of the pages and an indication of what the text will be about in each area ( do not include the actual text itself). e. The location, name, size, and URL of at least one video that will be embedded in a page (the video must provide appropriate content for your site). f. The position of each image on the page, the filename, the image size (width and height) in pixels, and a description of what the image shows (this will be the same as the contents of the alt tag). Each page must include at least one image or video (in addition to banner images). g. Web form: One of the six pages must include a form so that you can collect information from your visitors. Include the text that will be on the page that explains what the form is for, show the different form elements text boxes, radio buttons etc) that you will use (you must include at least 3 different form elements), and the labels and hints that you will use for your form. When you build your site you must use Google Forms to create the form, and embed it into your WordPress page.

4 SECTION 3: Design Look and feel and usability 1. Details of the site concept (what image will the site portray to its target audience?) 2. The name, and a screenshot of the WordPress theme preview that you have chosen. Explain the reasons you chose that particular theme. 3. Screenshots of the home page from 2 sites from a similar industry or sector that you feel represent good web design. a. Explain why these are effective web sites. SECTION 4: Site content text and images 1. You should obtain and organize the content of your site during the planning stage so that it is ready for when you begin the actual site development. The content will consist of text, images, and a YouTube video. 2. Include in your plan a short paragraph explaining how, when, and where you will obtain the content for your site. 3. Image/ Video information. a. Include information about all of your images in a table. i. In the first column list the filename and extension of the image, ii. in the second column indicate its width and height in pixels, iii. in the third column indicate which page it will be on, and iv. in the fourth column write a description of what the image shows (the same wording as you will use for the image alt tag in WordPress). v. The final column should include a link to the source of the image (if you hold the copyright to the image yourself, or have permission to use the image, then this is not necessary). 4. Search Engine Optimization a. Include information about your SEO "keywords/phrases" in a two column table. In the first column list the title of the page and in the second column write the keywords / phrases that the page is optimized for. Think about what people might type into a search engine to find a page with that type of content - those are your keywords / phrases. You will include these keywords / phrases in headings, subheadings, and in the text itself when you write your page copy.

5 Planning and Design Document Format Arial font size 11 (or similar) with 1.5 line spacing for the written section. Use numbered sections and subsections (eg. 1.1, 1.2, 2.1 etc), bullet points, and tabular data as appropriate. Professional/business writing style (third person, without grammatical and spelling errors) Referencing: Faculty of Management (Business) requires the APA style of referencing for academic papers. Resources for using APA are available from the VIU Writing Centre (Library, Room 474). You can find their hours of operation and access to online student resources (including tutorials and a printable Quick Guide) at: Assignments must be free of spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors. Assignments containing such errors will be penalized (i.e. mark deductions). Subject to VIU Policy, Late assignments will not be accepted without prior arrangement and for good cause. PART 2 WEBSITE PRODUCTION Part 2 will consist of the development and production of the website itself using WordPress. The website must include all the elements shown in your plan, as indicated above. The more detail you include in your wireframes/blueprints and in the tables with image size etc, the more time you will save when building your site. Ample lab time will be provided for website development.
