5 Working with AutoFit 1 The AutoFit palette and AutoFit tool are used to build relationships between frames or lines and set growing and fitting behaviors for frames. AutoFit Palette The Typefi AutoFit palette allows production artists to assign absolute minimum and maximum sizes for text and graphic frames and line objects, and configure dynamic fit options for Text Frames. AutoFit Palette. AutoFit Tool The AutoFit tool is used to create the relationship between two frames. AutoFit relationships exist between object edges or center points. Relationships with or between corners are not permitted. The relations can be simple a one-to-one relationship, or more complex daisy-chain or one-to-many relationships. AutoFit Relationships An AutoFit Relationship is a relationship between two frames established with the AutoFit tool. Additional size behavior for frames is controlled by settings applied in the AutoFit palette. Creating a relationship To define an AutoFit relationship between two objects you must link them together with a parent and child control point. Typefi AutoFit tool. 6 To build such a relationship select the AutoFit tool, then click the edge or center point of the parent frame, next click the edge or center point of the child frame. When you resize or move the frame containing the parent edge or center control point, the child control point repositions to maintain its constant distance to the parent. Editing a frame within an AutoFit relationship. For example (see graphic above): When the bottom edge of the graphic frame containing the parent control point is moved up, the top edge of the Text Frame moves ups as well, due to its relationship with the parent control point. 4 1 Typefi AutoFit

7 Deleting a relationship To delete an individual AutoFit relationship, retrace the steps you took when creating the AutoFit relationship. Removing an AutoFit relationship. For example if you ve created a parent-child relationship between the bottom of a graphic frame (parent control point) and the top edge of a caption frame (child control point), then removing this relationship would involve selecting the AutoFit tool and clicking on the parent control point first (bottom edge of graphic frame) and clicking the child control point next (top edge of caption frame) Changing direction of relationship You can reverse the direction of a relationship without having to remove the relationship and then recreating it. Reversing an AutoFit Relationship. To change the direction of a relationship swap the child and parent control point positions select the AutoFit tool. Click on the frame edge or center point containing the current child control point, next click on the frame edge or center point containing the parent control point. You have now reversed the direction of an existing relationship. Adding AutoFit Attributes AutoFit results in resizing of frames during content run-in that forms part of page composition. AutoFit attributes control the minimum and maximum allowed frame width or height during resizing. In addition, they control how a Text Frame is resized so that a variable amount of text content can fit during page composition. The AutoFit palette is used to set AutoFit attributes for individual frames as well as frames forming part of an AutoFit relationship defined by the AutoFit tool. 1. Working with AutoFit 5

8 Minimum and maximum sizes Use the minimum or maximum frame size settings in the AutoFit palette to set frame resize restrictions that apply during page composition. After applying a frame width or height limit, the frame can only be resized within those limits. minimum width maximum width minimum height maximum height Minimum and Maximum Width and Height settings. Adding a size limit There are two ways in which the size limits can be set: Manually by entering the size field boxes in the AutoFit palette Automatically by clicking the size buttons in the AutoFit palette. Manual To set a size limit for a frame or line object, ensure that the AutoFit palette is visible. Select one or more frames for which you want to enter minimum or maximum width or height settings. Next type the numeric value in the appropriate fields in the AutoFit palette. For example, imagine that a particular graphic frame may not grow wider than the column width of the text column in which it appears. In this case you could enter a maximum frame width setting that matches the column width. Where multiple frames or line objects of different sizes are selected, the entered values will be the same for all selected objects. Automatic Current frame width and height settings for a selected frame can be entered automatically. Select one or more frames or line objects, and then click the minimum or maximum size buttons for width or height. Doing so copies the current frame width or height settings into the clicked AutoFit palette size fields. Where multiple frames are selected of different sizes, the width and height values will correctly indicate each frame s individual size. 6 1 Typefi AutoFit

9 Removing an AutoFit limit To remove an AutoFit limit, delete the minimum or maximum size values in the AutoFit palette. AutoFit Text Frame resize options AutoFit Text Frame options control how a Text Frame is resized when text is inserted during page composition. AutoFit options are always active, this means that frames resize dynamically as content is added or removed from Text Frames. This dynamic resizing prevents text overset. Where AutoFit options are applied on a multiple column Text Frame, text will be balanced across all columns. AutoFit Option Baseline Gap Frame resize settings. The following options are available: Keep Frame Size (default), Resize from Top, Resize from Center, Resize from Bottom and Baseline Gap value. 1. Working with AutoFit 7

10 Baseline Gap 0.08 in Baseline Gap 0.08 in Resize from Top AutoFit Options AutoFit Option Keep Frame Size Resize From Top Resize From Center Resize From Bottom Baseline Gap Description Default option. It allows resizing of the Text Frame in InDesign without any AutoFit restrictions applying. Is a good setting to start out with when preparing a frame for AutoFit fitting. As more text is inserted in the Text Frame, the frame will resize from the top down. As more text is inserted in the Text Frame, the frame will resize from the center outward, moving the top upward and bottom downward to make the copy fit. As more text is inserted in the Text Frame, the frame will resize from the bottom up. The distance from the bottom of the lowercase x in the last line of text in a frame to the bottom of the Text Frame. Removing AutoFit Settings AutoFit, as we ve seen, controls relationships between frames or line objects as well as frame resize instructions. Removing an AutoFit relationship To remove an individual AutoFit relationship, retrace the steps you took when creating the AutoFit relationship. 8 1 Typefi AutoFit

In addition multiple frames, for instance those making up a Typefi Element, can contain multiple parent-child relationships. To remove all of the AutoFit relationships an individual object might have, select the object with the selection tool and then choose Remove Relationships from the AutoFit palette fly-out menu. AutoFit palette fly-out menu. Selecting multiple objects, and then choosing Remove Relationships results in removal of all relationships for the selected objects. Removing AutoFit attributes To remove an AutoFit attribute from one or more frames or line objects, start by selecting the object(s) with the selection tool, then delete the values from the AutoFit palette size field. To reset the AutoFit setting back to its default value, set the option back to Keep Frame Size. Clear Attributes results in removal of all attributes for the selected objects and resetting of AutoFit options to Keep Frame Size. To remove all of the AutoFit attributes from one or more frames or line objects, start by selecting the object(s), and then choose Clear Attributes from the AutoFit palette fly-out menu. 1. 12 Removing Relationships and Attributes. To remove all of the AutoFit attributes and relationships from one or more frames or line objects, start by selecting the object(s) with the selection tool and then choose Clear All from the AutoFit palette fly-out menu. Selecting multiple objects and then choosing Clear All, results in removal of all attributes and relationships for the selected objects and resetting of resize options to Keep Frame Size.
