About this Guide This user guide contains all of the information required to allow you to use the Professional ebook system to manage and activate Title licenses and access; download and install the Professional ebook software; and use the software to view, navigate, and search Professional ebook Titles. The Professional ebook system was created with the intention of allowing content owners to deliver a variety of Titles covering any number of topics. As such, this guide is intended to offer a general overview of the Professional ebook features that will be common to all titles housed within the system. Individual Titles will have implemented specific Professional ebook features such as the list of context fields available for the Quick Search function in a manner best suited to the content type and structure of that particular Title. Look within the Title(s) you have access to for a How To guide that describes these specific features. How does the Professional ebook System work? The Professional ebook system delivers Title content to users through an interaction between two major components a server component which manages the licensing and delivery the Pro ebook Titles; and a 1

5 software component that is used to login to the server, display the list of Titles available to a user, and to download and view the content of a Title. Often, your first interaction with the Professional ebook Connect system will come as a result of receiving an invitation to access a Title. This invitation will contain a link which can be used to activate a license and associate it with a user account. Following this link leads to the Professional ebook Connect website, where you can connect the Title license to your account simply by logging into the system (if you already have a Connect account) or automatically through the process of creating a new Connect account. For a more detailed walkthrough of the license activation process, see the section on Professional ebook Connect. After you have activated a license and associated it with your account, you are now ready to download the Professional ebook ereader software and view the title to which you now have access. More information on supported platforms and links to download and install the ereader software can be found at Once you have installed and launched the software, you will be asked to login with your Professional ebook Connect account. An option to save your login information for automatic entry is provided for each of the software platforms. After you login to the system, your library view will load, displaying all of the Titles to which you have active licenses. To view a Title, you must first download it to your device. In this manner, you will have continuous access to the Title, whether or not you currently have access to an internet connection. Once you have downloaded the title, you can launch and view its contents. For more information on the features and functionality of the ereader software, see the appropriate section for your installed version of the Professional ebook ereader. Where can I learn more about using Professional ebook? 6 Professional ebook Connect For Titles to be available on The Professional ebook system, two components are required the server based Connect system manages access and delivers the Titles to the ereader software, which is then used to view the content of these Titles. Professional ebook Connect is a web based application that acts as the interface for account management, subscription and license distribution, and device management tools. CogniLore is working with Publishers, Associations, and content owners and authors to continuously add new titles to the Professional ebook system. As Titles are added to the system, we will continue to update the available list of titles at To find out if one of your favorite reference titles is available in Professional ebook format, please contact the Title publisher. Types of Professional ebook Roles Access to Titles within Professional ebook Connect is managed through the use of Roles. Certain Roles within Connect allow you to extend licenses to other users, whether or not those users currently have an account. An account is required in order to activate those licenses; however, the creation of an account and the activation of a license can take place in a single step. For users of Professional ebook Titles, two roles are most important the Curator role and the User role. The Curator Role The Professional ebook system, unlike other ebook solutions, was designed to provide support to organizations requiring access to multiple copies of a Title. In order to provide this support, the Professional ebook implemented the role of Curator. 6

10 The Curator role is used manage a subscription to a license set consisting of one or more licenses to a Title. Curators act as license managers, with the ability to send our license activation invitations to users, view the list of users who have been assigned or invited to activate a license, or revoke a license from one user and reassign that license to another. Curators are also able to be Users, and can invite themselves or be invited by another Curator to activate and use a license. For more information on the features and functions of the Curator Role, see the section on Curator Options. The User Role The User Role defines your access to one or more titles within the Professional ebook system. In order to view a Title, you must have an Account with an active License associated with that Title, in which case you become a User of that Title. Single License Roles (Both Curator and User) In many cases, a single individual will purchase access to a single title. Connect has been designed such that when this is true, the Curator subscription activation process will also allow the account to be assigned the License at the same time. Figure 6 - A license activation invitation with both Curator and License acceptance options This saves the step of having to first accept that license, and then to subsequently have to send yourself an invitation to the only license available within the subscription. Note If you accepted a license unintentionally: If you have accepted a single use license as the Curator that was intended for another user, follow the steps under Revoking Licenses in the Curator Options below to free up the license and the assign it to the proper User. Viewing and Managing Your Account Profile You can view and make changes to your account profile at any by access the Edit Profile screen within Connect. You can find link to the Edit Profile screen in the status block in the top left corner of site. Use the Edit Profile screen to modify a number of your Profile Figure 7 - The Edit Profile Link (found in the status block in the top right hand corner) time the hand 7

After a Title has been downloaded, the Download icon is replaced by the Open Title icon ( ), which is used to launch the Title and view its contents. As well, the Delete icon ( ) is added, which can be used to remove the Title content. Note that the Professional ebook system is designed for multiuser usage. If you delete a Title to which other users of your device are still subscribed, the Title will show as requiring a download, but will not have been removed from the device. Figure 32 - A Library Panel view with two Titles, one of which is actively being downloaded and installed. Additional Library Panel Options Sorting Titles Tap on the Sort by link at the top of the screen to change the sort order of the available Titles into Last Viewed, Title, or Publisher options. Refreshing the View If you have recently activated a license for a new title while the Professional ebook App has been running, tap on the Refresh Tiles icon ( ) to reload the panel and display the new addition to your Library. Logging Out To end your current Professional ebook session, or to logout the current user and login under a different Connect account, use the Logout link. Viewing Professional ebook Titles Once you have downloaded a Professional ebook title, you can launch that title to navigate, view, and search the contents. 25

29 A Professional ebook Title is displayed through a collection of panels, each of which is used to display different aspects of the Title. You can access each of the panels using the panel navigation bar at the bottom of the screen. You can also access most of the panels by swiping from left to right or right to left to switch to each panel in turn. The only panel to which you cannot swipe is the Media to access this panel or to switch to another panel from Media, you must use icons on the panel navigation bar. The following is a detailed overview of content contained in each of the panels, and the icon used to access that panel Panel Navigation The Panel Navigation bar is located at the bottom of the screen (see Figure 4). You can access each of these panels or actions by tapping on the icon. Figure 33 - The Panel Navigation bar Each of the icons can be used to perform the following different actions: Used to return to the Library panel to view your Title list. For more information see the section on the Library panel. Displays the Media panel. The Media panel is a container into which multimedia content can be loaded. For more information see the section on the Media panel. Displays the Title s Table of Contents. For more information see the section on the Table of Contents panel. The Reader Panel contains the primary contents of a pane. The Reader is also the primary interface used to perform searches, add annotations to the content, and launch extended content into the Media panel. For more information see the sections on the Reader panel, Searching, and Annotating Content - Highlights, Notes, and Favorites. The Annotation panel is used to view the highlights, notes, and favorites that you have added to a Title. You can create and manage your list of annotation types, which can be used to organize and differentiate your annotations for highlight color and search. For more information see the section on Annotations The History panel displays a growing list of your interactions with a title, including a history of searches performed, ToC Nodes and links followed, assets loaded into the Media panel, and more. For more information on the History panel, refer to the section on History The Previous and Next icons are used to move through Reader panel events, such as following a link. The Reader Panel The Reader Panel is the prime presentation layer for content in the Professional ebook ereader system. It is here that you view and read through the content of a Title. 26

30 Flow - Continuous Scrolling Professional ebook content is presented as a continuous flow in the professional ebook ipad ereader, you swipe up and down to traverse through the Title content. This content presentation allows you to always view Professional ebook content in context to the text that immediately precedes and follows the content currently displayed. As you flow through the content additional text will be dynamically loaded in the direction you are reading. The Content Navigator Scrollbar You can always determine your relative position within the content by looking at the Navigator Scrollbar to the right of the Reader Panel. For more details on your current location, tap on the Navigator Cursor to view a structural view on your current location. To rapidly navigate through the Title s Table of Contents structure, tap, hold, and slide the Navigator Cursor up and down. Search In Professional ebook for ipad, the search tools are found at the top of the screen. For detailed information on using search to find content in Professional ebooks, see the section on Searching. HTML Content and Following Links The Reader panel uses HTML 5 to display the Title content, in the same manner as your favorite web browser. Like your browser, different sections of a title can be linked together. Tap on a link to jump to the linked location in the content. Like the HTML in a web browser, link styling is very flexible and different publishers will create different looking links, and links with different functionality. After you ve triggered a link, you can return to the previous location using the Previous / Next arrows located within the Navigation bar. Triggering Media and the Media Panel There are two ways to trigger the Media Panel. The first is to access the Media Panel button at the bottom of the screen. The second is when you tap on an object that has been linked to the Media panel, referred to as an asset. Types of assets include images, video, audio, PDF files, Office Documents, and even complete websites. Note that some links are to assets that are not contained within the Title, which will require an active Internet connection. More information can be found in the section on the Media panel. Annotating Content Creating Highlights, Notes, and Favorites The Professional ebook ereader for ipad has powerful features that allow you to add your own personalization to the Title content. These features are collectively referred to as Annotations. The Annotation features allow you highlight text, add notes, and identify favorite locations within the content. Annotation Types Each Highlight and Note created is associated with a specific Annotation Type. Annotation Types allow you to organize your Highlights and Notes, apply custom colors to the Highlights, and then narrow down your Annotation searches to these specific types. These features can make Annotation Types a powerful way to adapt the content of a Title to your own purposes. For example, a lawyer making use of a legal Title may 27

31 create different types for each case; and accountant different types for each client; or a doctor different types for each patient. The Default Annotation Type The first Annotation Type in a Title is created for you by default and named Default Annotation Type. You can experiment with the application, view, and searching of annotations using this type, and then go on to create your own. You can rename the Default Annotation Type using the Annotation Type Manager view of the Annotations panel. Creating a New Annotation Type There are two methods of creating Annotation Types. The first is to create the Annotation Type at the same time as when you are adding an Annotation to the content. The second is through the Annotation Types view in the Annotations panel. More information regarding the options available in the Annotation panel can be found in the associated section. Adding a Highlight and Note Annotation using the Reader panel To create a new annotation type, tap and hold on a word in the text, and a set of context options will appear. You can extend the selection using the pins which appear at the perimeter of your selection the text selected will be the text that will be highlighted as your new Annotation. Figure 34 - The Add Annotation Context Options Select Add Annotation from among the context options provided to open the New Annotation dialog. Figure 35 - The New Annotation Dialog To select the Annotation Type, tap on the text of the currently selected Annotation Type to view a list of the available types. To add a new Type, tap on the ( sign. ) icon next to 28

32 Enter the name of your new Annotation type. You can change the annotation highlight color by tapping on the Color Picker and then selecting or defining a new annotation highlight color. Tap on Save to finish creating your new Annotation Type. You will be returned to the New Annotation dialog. Figure 36 - The New Annotation Type Dialog Within the New Annotation dialog, you will see your new Annotation Type displayed under the Selected Annotation Type heading. Add an optional note within the edit box provided. Figure 37 - Adding a Note to an Annotation Figure 38 - An applied Annotation with the icon indicate the presence of a Note Keep in mind that the text that you have highlighted, along with the text of your Note, will both be added to the search index for that Annotation Type, allowing you to use the annotation search functionality to find it in the future. Tap on the Save button to apply your new Annotation Favorites Favorites are similar to Highlights and Notes, with the exception that they contain no additional information, and therefore contain no text that can be searched on. Your collection of favorites is used to denote sections of the Title to which you return often. 29

33 Adding a Favorite is similar to adding an annotation. Use the long press or tap and hold gesture to display the list of context options, and select Add Favorite to display the Add Favorite dialog. Figure 39 - The context options menu The Add Favorite Dialog contains information related to your new Favorite. The Name of the Favorite is automatically populated with the nearest heading that containing your new favorite. This is an editable field that you can change to a more appropriate selection. The location of your new Favorite is its position related to the Table of Contents structure of the Title. The Preview shows a scrollable sample view of the content of the text to which the favorite will be attached. Click on Save to set the position of your new Favorite. In the column to the left of the paragraph you will now see a star ( ) indicating that a Favorite has been applied at that location. Figure 40 - A Sample Add Favorite Dialog Figure 41 - A paragraph with a Favorite attached Searching Annotations You can search for Annotations by their associated Annotation. See the section on Searching for more details. Viewing and Managing Annotations To view an annotation, tap on the highlighted text or note icon to activate the Annotations panel with that Annotation selected. Refer to the Annotations panel section for more information. 30
