1 Screencast-O-matic 1. All set? Open up ScreencastOmatic You DO NOT have to login and create an account. 2. Practice! Click on the Start recording button on the computer screen 3. Wait while it checks to see if the needed Java plug-in is installed on the computer. Works with both a Mac and PC 4. It will suggest you set the volume on your microphone. Click on the blue text on the screen to check 5. It directs you to look at the recording bar, and click on the microphone icon on the bar. 6. Once you click the start recording button you will see a dotted box on your screen. You can drag the box larger or smaller on your screen. It will record anything you see inside that box once you start. Alt-P will start and pause your recording

2 7. The recording bar will appear at the bottom of your screen. The red circle starts the recording and it will change to a pause symbol when it is recording. 8. If you pause, it will show this bar, and you can restart or click that you are done. 9. When you click Done, it will show what you recorded and you can play it. Now watch your recording. If you like it proceed, if not, don t save it and do it again until you like the recording. You can delete the recording and do a new one over and over again after you press done. The program will only let you save ONE for free at a time. You have to delete it or download and then delete it before you can do another one. 10. Saving your tutorial. If your SSI Chief wants this published on their site, or to YouTube, be sure to ask first. Recommended: Publish to Video File.

3 VoiceThread VoiceThread is a wonderful resource for all ages. One of the benefits for the younger students is the ability to narrate their story, and the teacher can either scan, or photograph drawings the students create to go with their story. This is a great story-telling tool. Voicethread is a cloud-based multimedia tool. You can upload videos, images, record audio (from a cell phone or mic), and make comments. It has a single free account (limited to 5 VoiceThread stories per account), or educational accounts. Educator accounts are located at ed.voicethread. An educator license costs $79/year and allows you to create up to 50 student accounts and to work in a secure environment with management of the resources and student accounts. A school or district license can be purchased as well. Step-by-step: Create your account and save your password. Pick out the media you will upload and script your story in advance. 1. Create: Once you are logged in, click on the tab: Create to begin. 2. Upload: Click on 1. Upload Options: Notice that you can upload from your computer, record from your webcam, a URL, or Media sources (your other voicethreads, Flickr, Facebook, NY Public Library). The NY Public Library has shared a Digital Gallery of 700,000 images from their rare and historical collections. You can view these directly by going to and browse by subject, name, or library divisions. Upload or select the images to use for your story. Remember you can create a PowerPoint show and save it as separate images and then upload them.

4 3. Sequence: Once your photos are uploaded you can click and drag them into the sequence you prefer (great sequencing activity). 4. Title and/or web link: You can select a photo in your uploaded library and add a title and link, you can trash it, or rotate it around. 5. Narration: When you are done with these steps you can begin to record your voice. Click on Comment to start this process. Your picture will appear in a larger box, with the word comment at the bottom. Click on comment and it will expand to give some options.

5 Recording Options: The Phone option: and it will call your phone so you can record. The camera option will ask you to enable your web camera to record. The option will connect with your computer microphone if enabled and record your narration. The option lets you type in a comment. It also adds a paint palette which you can select a color from and write, draw, or mark up on the photo (arrow drawn on the photo pointing to the lion s nose.. The upload arrow, let s you upload an audio file (only with a paid account). When done, click the right arrow on the slide to continue to the next slide. Step 6: After the Last slide: This screen lets you add in a description, provides a weblink to your show, let s you invite your friends to view, sends it in an , or provides the embed code. 6 Instructional Strategies and Technology Step-by-Step Instructions by Andy Mann GLOGSTER You will use Glogster for brainstorming which could be a part of a K-W-L activity. This would be the K - what is Known about a topic. This glog is a brain dump where what you known about the topic is recorded. You will include at least one image (tips for finding images listed below.) While this project is designed to be completed outside of your classroom, it could easily be done with your students using a multimedia projector or completed by students individually or in small groups. C R E A T E Y O U R A C C O U N T 1. Go to Edu Glogster edu.glogster.com and click EDU BASIC in the center of the screen. Even though it says Register Virtual Class you can use this for a single educational user and add students later if you want. 2. In the page which opens, select a nickname which will be your user name, provide an address, and password. Record your nickname and password. Complete the rest of your account information and click Sign Up. If you already have an account or when returning, click Log In and enter your Nickname and password. G E T S T A R T E D 3. After registering, click Create a Glog. You will see a new document with some default elements which can be edited or deleted. Delete each element one by one so you can start with a blank screen. To delete an element, click on it then click the trash can icon. 4. At any time you have the option to change the look of the background of the page. For a project like this, the grid is fine, but if you want to you can change the glog wall or the page wall. For this project, a solid color works well for the Glog Wall. Click on the Wall button and then

7 Glog Wall tab. Select a preset color like white and then click USE IT! The window stays open and you need to click the small X in the upper right corner to close it. 5. Add a text box for the title. Select the text button and select a text style. There are a lot of choices. After selecting a text element, click USE IT! or simply drag it onto the screen. Click Edit and delete the place holder text and replace it with the name for a title. For example, if you are listing all that you know about whales type Whales. The font, size and even the element color and size may be changed. To change the text, click on Ab1 button. To change the color of the element, click on the multicolor box next to the OK button. The text may include a hyperlink (not needed for this project.) Click OK. Close the element window. Resize the element and rotate using the handles at the corners and the rotate links in the centers of the element and edges. Click and drag to place in a new position. 6. Add additional text elements to hold the text about what you know. Repeat multiple times to hold all the text you want. If you want to use a similar element repeatedly, the element may be cloned. Reposition and resize as desired. 7. Add an image to represent what you are writing about. A list of website where you can find copyright free images can be found at: Images and Sounds.pdf Another site for images is from Discovery Education. Images may be uploaded from your computer. You can also get them from the Internet by using the URL for the website using the Link button. The Grab button allows you to grab an image from a source such as a web cam. 8. Optional: add graphics elements to add interest to your project. Rotate, resize, overlap elements to make the project more interesting. Elements may be moved forward or back.

8 9. Optional: add video and sound. The video link allows direct searching from SchoolTube. Videos from other sites may be used by using the Upload or Link from My videos. You may select from different players. P O S T L I N K O N Y O U R W I KI 10. Click Save and Publish. Give it a name, category, and tag words. May it public either as Finished or Unfinished. 11. A screen will come up with sharing options. This includes a link and an embed code. Copy the embed code by clicking on it. This code will be pasted into a widget on the Cues, Questions, and Advanced Organizer page in your wiki. 12. Write a paragraph providing two or three other examples for using Glogster to support your curriculum - as an advanced organizer or with other strategies. Glogster handout by Andy Mann 2
