Lecture 14 Moving Forward 1 / 23
Course Evaluations Remember to fill out course evaluations for this class! Please provide honest and constructive feedback on the course Anything that you'd want me to see should be placed in the recitation evaluation 2 / 23
Final Project Info Remember to send me the link to your GitHub repo & sign up for a demo slot If you don't do both of the above, you won't receive credit for the assignment Your site must be hosted & demoed on Heroku! 3 / 23
Impostor Syndrome Refers to high-achieving individuals marked by an inability to internalize their accomplishments Have a persistent fear of being exposed as a "fraud" It's even worse since there is no concrete point after which you feel like a legitimate developer This is unfortunately very common in the tech industry NONE of you should feel like impostors Accept that you have more to learn, but that that doesn't make you any less of a developer 4 / 23
Moving Forward... 5 / 23
... as Ruby and Rails Developers 6 / 23
Join the Community! Ruby and Rails have very active (and opinionated) communities Check out podcasts, newsletters, and talks Listen to Ruby Rogues podcasts Subscribe to Ruby Weekly Watch talks 7 / 23
Work on What You Already Know Rails is hard It's not enough to just know Ruby You have to learn SO many other things Learn as much as possible about the things you've already seen Flesh out your understanding of best practices Learn more about testing 8 / 23
Take a Look at the Other Stu The Ruby on Rails Guides are incredible Take a look at some of the more advanced stuff Rails 5.2 was recently released and introduced: Active Storage Redis Cache Store A new way of dealing with Credentials And more... 9 / 23
... as Web Developers 10 / 23
Learn HTML/CSS & SQL HTML & CSS are fairly easy to learn but they're extremely important in Web Dev CSS has its own set of conventions and frameworks If you're going to work with databases, you'll need to learn SQL Rails extracts away the need to work directly with databases, but this is an important skill Take a look at NoSQL databases like MongoDB 11 / 23
Learn JavaScript In order to be a modern web developer, you HAVE to know JavaScript You should start with the basics, learn jquery, and then learn more modern frameworks Best practices in the JavaScript world are constantly changing, but it's going to be around for a long time Take CIS / 23
Get Comfortable with the Cloud Check out the many services offered by Amazon Web Services You can use AWS for web hosting, scalable databases, and much more It's fairly cheap and makes it so that we don't have to deal with a lot of tedious things 13 / 23
Figure out Domain Name Systems (DNS) DNS allows you to purchase a domain and host sites on them You can set custom URLs for your Heroku Apps There are a lot of options, but Namecheap is a good option 14 / 23
... as Developers 15 / 23
Learn to Work with Others Developing by yourself can be hard and tedious It can be hard to motivate yourself and stay accountable Unfortunately, most of our classes ban working together even though you will almost always be working with others in industry Take the project-based courses that allow you to work in groups Participate in hackathons (like PennApps) Start a project with a friend or join a club that lets you build projects with other students 16 / 23
Get Nice and Cozy with Git Git is probably one of the most important skills you can have as a developer It's a version control system that you've actually been using all semester It is the primary way for users to share code It is crucial for working with others Learn more about the commands that you've used in your homeworks Learn and follow Git best practices 17 / 23
Learn about Concepts in Software Engineering Take a look at Agile Software Development Read the Agile Manifesto Agile development is employed a lot in industry There are a lot of design principles that help guide development Take CIS 350 to learn more 18 / 23
Love your Computer! 19 / 23
Bash Get comfortable with UNIX/LINUX commands and utilities Customize it (like the color scheme and display) to fit your taste Edit your.bash_profile and.bashrc files liberally Starting using tools like iterm and tmux Look at other shells like zsh 20 / 23
Text Editor Learn keyboard shortcuts for everything You should never have to use your mouse Customize the color schemes to match what you like Install code snippets Some popular text editors: Vim Emacs Atom Sublime Text Brackets VS Code 21 / 23
Finally Just keep learning! Start new projects Figure out what you're interested in and explore it 22 / 23
Thank you! Thank you all for an incredible semester It was a privilege teaching you all I'm looking forward to your demos! 23 / 23
