9 15 15 New upgrade ScienceDirect release 1 February 2014 Making it easier to find relevant ScienceDirect content from search engines and other discovery services Several internal modifications have been made to improve search engine indexing and help you find relevant ScienceDirect content more easily from Google and other search engines. In response to feedback from you, we have also boosted the algorithm used for the ScienceDirect search so that more recent content is ranked higher.

10 16 16 Previously on Google Scholar it was not possible for the customer to see whether they had access to (authentic) ScienceDirect articles or not Hmmm final or alternate version? Do I have access to the full-text?

11 17 17 Now, if customers share their holdings information with Google, Scholar will show full text search results from ScienceDirect It s the final published version! I do have access to the full-text! Google Scholar currently contributes 15% of FTAs

13 19 19 New upgrade ScienceDirect release 1 February 2014 Seamless export to Mendeley You can now, easily and seamlessly, export citations and/or full text PDF articles directly from ScienceDirect into Mendeley. From the article page, choose the export menu and directly save the citation to Mendeley

24 Quick-and-easy searches For problems with few concepts that can be expressed with few words or phrases that are not too common Select the ScienceDirect database Compose a simple query using a few important terms linked by AND or OR operators Display article preview Modify with simple changes as needed Print complete records retrieved Source: Harter, 1986 and Wagners, 1989

You can open all the abstracts on a page by clicking Open All Previews. 34

30 The building blocks approach Limit/refine your search when the combined set is obtained, inferences can be made about precision and recall by adjustments of individual concepts or how these concepts are combined use Refine Results, to customize the results by limiting to certain categories of documents. For example, limit to documents from a certain source, by a certain author, or published in a certain year. for most categories, SccienceDirect displays the number of results associated with such refinements 37

31 The building blocks approach Limit/refine your search if the results seem to be not sufficiently focused yet, despite having combined all required concepts already check whether AND-combination of terms result in "false coordination" replace AND-relation by "exact phrase" or proximity search modern AND "town planning" >> "modern town planning" modern AND "town planning" >> modern w/5 "town planning" check whether some term is too common in almost any general research description limit that term to Title- or Keyword-field to ensure that it is the real subject check whether your terms occur in other (unwanted) context refine with additional term(s), characteristic for your context (AND-relation) refine by excluding characteristic term(s) for unwanted context (NOTrelation) 38
